I come back to this game every few and tend to play for about 2-3 weeks hard. Super happy to see a knowledgeable well spoken youtuber to help me get back rolling. The pacing was a bit fast for me, but I suspect that is only due to me being rusty. I only can hope you will continue to put out content since there seems to be a market for it despite this game being 2 years younger than me. I also noticed there is a subreddit for the game with some activity. Glad to see the community branching out to modern platforms. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to more videos.
Thanks so much for making the videos! I've enjoyed TTD back in the 90's but since then I've tried to play OpenTTD so many times but just can't get into it again. The main reason being that I can't seem to find purpose. Anyway, you explaining the industry set etc. helped me a lot and now I'm beginning to understand how you can have a reason to go big!
YES! have been waiting for this. As for suggestions I think everything is perfect, maybe as other said it would be even better to explain even more your decision making. I mean, just by watching this first video you opened me to a whole new way to play this game, I can only imagine what wonders you can show/explain us in the future.
I don't know about "whole new way to play the game," might just be that NUTS Unrealistic Train Set has really low costs. But thank you for your nice comment!
@@LugnutsK I am way behind with strategy, trust me, things may seem normal to you but something like a fully upgraded backbone hub just blows my mind. That's what I'm talking about with the "whole new way" thing. Looking forward to the series!
Great so far. Looking forward to more. It’s really helpful that you’re explaining why you’re doing each step. I’m one of those people whose played TTD ALOT but never like really learned those ‘hidden’ mechanics in the game to really optimize things. I just built basic L_R networks and eventually bottleneck when towns got too big. I’ve always wanted to do a cargo game but I can be daunting to start, and I’m never sure what settings and NewGRFs to use for it.
I actually like how you cut out the bits where you are fixing the orders. But maybe if there is someone who doesnt know what you have done, you could show one part where you are fixing it, and then just cut the rest. I guess that would be a general tip, show 1 thing maybe precisely and skip the rest. Might edit after i come with something else
Loved this, I don't have really loads of time to play myself so it's great to just watch these and get the same warm fuzzy feeling! I played a couple of OpenTTD coop games back in the heyday when V was around, learned the basics but never felt confident to contribute much!
OpenTTD Industries production high with long trains first, work or there be breakdowns later ? Terraforming taking out most hills ? If you look the first coal route you just pass by a much closer powerstation ?Power stations have a maximum take, else delivered useless ? TTD playd I may have been out for to long. What you say about resticting road built by the local towns is interesting. Hope this Let´s play will last for a long time !
I have breakdowns off, causes too much trouble when there are a lot of trains. I avoid terraforming too much. I use the realistic acceleration model so slopes aren't a problem as long as the trains don't have to stop and restart on them. And for the power station, you get paid more $$ the farther you transport the cargo so farther is better (unintuitive, but thats how OpenTTD works). I hope it lasts a long time too, thanks for your comment!
I liked it short! There are tons of 1 hour stream VODs. This was a nice pace. I'd love a video where you explain how you pick a combination of NewGRFs. I think it's a barrier to restarting; I want some extra stuff but it's not easy to know what works well together.
Yiy! The much anticipated Lets Play! I had no problems following so far, but as you get into more and more advanced networks it would be good if you slow down a bit to explain your decision making (why a bridge, why this signal, why connect at a certain point) As an other comment already said: time lapses over cuts and maybe highlight what you have done a little bit afterwards. Try and talk a bit more about the train and industry NewGRF's, I have never used them and have no idea how they work. Other than that: I have never looked forward to a lets play series as much as this one. Why do you set the trains to unload at the far side of the station?
Good suggestions, will do. Also good question, I don’t have any reason I’m using far end, near end is probably a better choice. But no difference as long as the station length match train lengths.
@@LugnutsK Also a suggestion for a tutorial vid: mega stations. Just started a new game with your tips and realised it's something you haven't covered yet
Yay lugnuts a let’s play! A few tips, maybe make either less cuts or the episode a tad longer as it felt a bit short to me... Also I dunno if you know but when you hold down control and click a station (when making orders for a train) it automatically sets it to full load! Also new GRF list please (or dm me on discord)
Seems I discovered you after you stopped content, but some of your tutorial content was great, and it's really nice seeing this play through. I was actually just wondering the other day if there were any GRFs that limited the demand of secondary industries based on the demand for their production, turns out there is! Thanks.
These are great! Always love seeing more OpenTTD let's plays :) Could you do a video about your game setup and settings? I'm still new so a lot of the things you're doing are still super advanced for me lol
Tip : maybe use timelapses for building long tracks? Tip : maybe try using some kind of transition between scenes? Top : The edits were placed very well.
good stuff! I first played tt when i was a wee boy. Even after upgrading graphics card this was one of the first games I play. Looks like ive been doing ti wrong for years! If not mentioned already, could you mention the keyboard shortcuts that you are using? kutgw
No wrong way to play as long as you're having fun :). Best way to learn shortcuts is to just roller your fingers across "qwer", "asd", "1234" and see what each of those do -- I use all of those for rail building, signals, terraforming, and demolition. Also "x" for toggling transparency, "b" for bridges and "t" for tunnels. Other big ones is or + clicking, for auto-building signals, bridges, and orders. Learned some new order ones from viewers
When placing feeder stations and a big collecting station, wouldn't it make sense to put the collecting one already close to an industry? For example the 2 oil wells would require only one extra feeder station.
Thats brilliant! Learned a lot. Could you please let know what signals specifically you're using at what junction? You are mentioning it, but not all the time and Im confused af in terms of those lightbulbs... Thanks!
I have a question actually, is there a feature now that lets you 'fill' signals all the way down a track or did you just cut out the bits where you added signals along the length of it?
Yes there is and it's very useful to know. After you place the first signal CTRL+DRAG your mouse, then let go, and it will fill up signals all down that direction of track.
What kind of distance do you go for when you begin a game for your first line? I keep building too big and going bust or too small and barely making a profit.
Good question. Stations do NOT have a build-in path signal. However when trains turn around they will try to reserve paths if they are in a block with path signals. So effectively, terminus stations have path signals because the trains turn around.
when i play i usually use create scenario rather than generating land, that way i can optimize income. My favorite cargo is passengers. May I know your game setting to scroll the view point? How to set up industry production to 100%? I am still wondering about your train platform design, seen in the coal mine (3 mines close together).
I have some videos about station rating and the feeder stations here: ru-vid.com/group/PLQdGFFtr_J3aMZbtiG2d0O-Iq3TtSP3NG Let me know if you have questions about them
Isn't it easier playing with NUTS as its trains have very low prices and low running costs? And as for distance being the biggest factor in payoff, aren't there types of cargo that require fast delivery?
Thank you for introducing me to bspi! Just what I needed. I'm enjoying your style of play, and picking up lots of inspiration. Do you ever do passenger networks?
I mainly play cargo, but I have done some passenger. Normal pax is a little too simple, can either make it more complex with logic like self-regulating networks (SRNW) or turn on cargodist (something I haven't tried).
Do you think feeders are a good idea early on in vanilla OpenTTD? I noticed you said in this video you have trains with lower running costs so I wonder if feeders might be prohibitively expensive in the early game.
Some vehicles have an older creation date. The cheapest steam vehicle you get actually gets made in the 1920's. He's playing with mods though, it's different vehicles all with their own creation dates
In the newgrf settings, select the NUTS train set and in the bottom right of the window will be a “parameters” button. Click that and there will be a parameter to set the signal appearance.
Do you use hotkeys? How? Which ones? And why does the bridge have no bridge :') aaand how do you know if a factory is of in reach of the electricity? :)
Main Hotkeys I use: A - rail tool, S - signals, D - demolish, R - red/remove, q/w/e - raise/lower/level, t - tunnel, b - bridge, x - toggle transparency. ctrl-drag for placing signals, ctrl-click for cycling signals, ctrl-click for shared order cloning trains, ctrl-click for full load orders, ctrl-click to stop/start trains, and probably a lot other things. You can learn a lot of them by just clicking random keys and try ctrl-clicking things. wiki.openttd.org/Hotkeys I have bridge transparency turned on so I can see signals and tracks underneath them. Early game it doesn't matter so much, but for big hubs it's pretty necessary. For the factories, it's done by city name, so if the its "Kefingfield Factory" and "Kefingfield Power Plant" they will be connected. Thanks for watching!
I'm manipulating the interface with mouse only, but you apparently are using keyboard controls at times, is this true? Would you care to comment on those, please. Also, your feeders- to pile coal up at a station they don't need to "in" the station? Rookie questions, but thanks.
A - track tool S - Signals R - toggle Remove D - Demolish T - Tunnel B - Bridge Q/W/E - lower/raise/level land X - toggle transparency del - close all windows And CTRL clicking is useful, does many different things depending on context. What do you mean by don't need to (be?) in the station? They will just go back and forth between their small and big station, moving coal from the small to the big
@@tonydesaire9326 It is in the station, if you place multiple stations next to each other they automatically connect to become one station. (You can press CTRL to prevent it from automatically doing that)
Good question, it's copied and pasted from my documents/openttd/openttd.cfg so it has the exact versions and parameters for the preset I'm using. I'm guessing you can't just copy and paste it into your own openttd.cfg unless you have them all installed already, but I haven't tested it
Just for more variety. I usually use CHIPS for FIRS games since the textures match, and ISR for everything else. But I like the option to use either. I probably should have also included Japanese stations or something else for pax, wasn't thinking about it
@@ChazAllenUK I suspect it would be in a folder called ".openttd" in your home directory ("~/.openttd/") though that might be more linux rather than macos
this game needs a graphic upgrade parnell or better than simcity or city skylines. as well as matching buildings and building tools. it's frustrating clicking something to build, only to tell you can't build here without explaining why.
If its not super early game and you have some decent airplanes, just put two big airports in big cities on opposite sides of the map. $$$ increases with distance (for all cargo/pax) so airplanes are OP If there are no decent airplanes your best bet is to just move some coal or pax a good distance, something like in this first LP episode
straight line gameplay is the same every time, if you terraform less, you get a different organic network every game, especially nice to see it on the map
it's not like everything goes to plan and all industries and places go exactly where he wants it to be. therefore he wont just use straight lines because maybe it would use more money and ofc the industries arent straight ahead of his line.
