A wonderful documentary my’ol mate 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊 I’ve got a Ropp Um Paul 9mm pipe recently…it smokes very well….I sure miss you today in ytpc…you had a quality channel indeed 👍👍😉💨💨💨
Thank you for an informative video. You do a good job researching your topics, which I very much appreciate. I discovered Ropp pipes when I was in graduate school. In the quagmire of academic poverty, I bought a Ropp cherry wood pipe because of its low price point. Yes, bark on the exterior and all that. It smoked very well, and did impart a nicely sweet flavor to the smoke. I did not find any more Ropp pipes until a few months ago when smokingpipes.com began offering those warehouse finds you talked about. Briar stummels made about 50-years ago and equipped with horn stems. I bought one for nostalgia's sake - and ended up buying about ten more. They are nice pipes that are well engineered and smoke very well for my taste. Ropp is also offering Algerian briar pipes in a line called "Superior." The briar seems to be of pretty good quality - aesthetically very appealing, well engineered with nice smoking properties. I consider them another great find. All told, I like the brand. Having talked about Ropp, pipes, might you consider doing a history on Genod? This is another French brand I have been smoking for a number of years, pipes bearing their own name and Genod-made proprietary pipes from Iwan Ries. I smoke them, but I know very little of their history.
Frank Bishop thank you kindly. That is a lovely story of your dicvoery and enjoyment of Ropp. I maintain that they are an under appreciated brand that offers amazing value for the very low price they charge. Thanks also for the heads up on Genod, I will keep an eye out for one on the estate market for a future episode.
2022...this is the most riveting discussion of a pipe brand I've experienced in a decade. Thank you and regards from Kuala Lumpur! Molto Dolce in a Ropp 25 Pompei
Enjoyed your talk, I smoked a Ropp cherrywood back in the 70s and have just bought another. Smokes very sweetly and is an excellent addition my collection.
Bare pipe really enjoy your videos, I have about 12 ROPP pipes i just love them. I am hoping you will do a video on how to repair cracked shanks as i have a lot of pipes with this problem. ...............Take care my friend..............Tree........................
hmmm good video, BUT I do think you end up talking ROPP too far down. It is certainly a quality pipe, even if SOME of their briar pipes have flaws in the wood. They have atleast 4 or 5 'seconds' brands, so they do have some standards. I myself own a Hungarian/Oom Paul ROPP that not only is drilled perfectly but also is made from flawless briar, and the grain features both birdseye and ring grain that, while not museum-worthy, matches any of your standard Savinellis, Petersons, Vauens, etc. Hungarians are notoriously a difficult shape to drill and carve perfectly, they often gurgle and what not, but this one is just perfect, never had it gurgle on me or anything like that. ROPP pipes, both pre- and post Chacom (which is a fantastic brand) had and have more than a century of experience to draw from when creating pipes, they knew and know what they were and are doing, and so I do feel you were too hard on the brand, they are certainly not basket pipes, far from it!
LackadaisicalE fair comment. I hope I did not come across as being down on Ropp pipes. I was thinking about their price point and position in the branding hierarchy which is at the cheaper end of the costs you can pay for a pipe, and at their price point they are excellent value for money.
I just got a ropp j14 briarwood and it came with a pipe sock with some french wrighting on it. If someone can translate it to English i would appreciate it. Good vid nice hystory think you.
