What do you do when the tide of a war has changed and suddenly your complicated, pole-vault-pole-length, bolt action rifles are no longer a viable solution to close quarters combat or outfitting a massive fighting force? Get out your sheet metal, some random parts from the hardware store, a few car mufflers and as many hands as you can get to build stuff and start cranking out some submachine guns. Few other categories of firearms come in so many unique shapes, sizes, and chamberings with such incredible stories behind each of their developments. Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss everything from the classic Tommy Gun and some other obscure old SMG’s to the more modern designs made famous by James Bond’s and Call of Duty’s on the big screens. If you’re a firearm enthusiast, this one has your name written all over it!

Love how you guys are run by an optics company but cover such a widespread bouquet of topics whereas most gun tubers almost excluvisely do reviews. Keep it up!

This would have been a great show to have the one and only Gun Jesus on. Also the grease gun stayed in service well beyond Vietnam. It was still in service with tank crews in the army during the first Gulf War. If you think the UMP has a slow rate of fire then you ought to check out the grease gun. It's comically easy to squeeze off one round.

I like your thinking, I’ve often thought Ian and Ryan could get serious Engineering and firearms nerd on, possibly learn from each other and teach us a whole heap.. Vortex needs to make this happen.. Can only hope..

I've shot a full auto grease gun. It's so easy to adjust your shots on target. Also it's rate of fire is comically slow compared to a bump fired ar15.

Cons: Everything Pros: Not in demand during ammo panics

My first caliber back in 1998. But 9mm just wins for me . Plus p ammo and limited production compares to 9mm killed it for me. More expensive, harder recoil, less rounds. And my targets are not wearing body armor. And rifles fix that problem with sbr's and pistol ar's in 300 black. So for my home its g17 with 21 round magazine of Speer gold dot and 8.5 inch 300 black ar15 pistol that I can suppress and run sub ammo in. And a 9mm m&p shield for the edc, same gold dot ammo and its a tiny 8 shot single stack so it fits any clothing options. 40 just isn't needed in my personal protection imo. Love my .45acp, but that isn't in my defense selection either. For me it's what I like to take to the range in my 1911's and Jericho's for fun. Just an old retired combat engineer's 2 cents. It's still a great round. But it just lost favor when tech made bullets better from what I can tell.

@@spraynpray Yeah, semi wadcutter bullets in a defensive or other combat pistol is a joke. Not to mention its a bootleg of a bootleg with a thin case and no taper, shits literally a low power revolver cartridge but they forgot the extra rim.

Any sorta delayed blowback SMG is just neat to me, MP5 and more recently the Angstadt roller delayed AR-9 upper or the CMMG radial delayed AR-15 conversions/dedicated AR-9 lowers. Excited to see how the Stribog SP9A3 turns out

I know this podcast is older now but. The Pederson device was supposed to be a big deal for the 1919 offensive that never happened because the war ended. American troops were supposed to be equipped with this device during that offensive that didn’t happen to give them a multi shot repeater out of their 1903 bolt guns to massacre the German troops in close range warfare. Meant to be a simple conversion of a new bolt group with magazine. This never came to fruition as the war ended in November 1918. It allowed troops to shoot full power 30-06 then convert to the device for storming trenches.

Hi guys. My understanding was that the Sten had a side mounted mag to make it easier to shoot prone. Cover was paramount in combat!

Just for a little help. A sub gun is a pistol caliber. A machine gun is a rifle caliber. A heavy machine gun is over 30 cal. A cannon is 20 mm and larger. Used to be cannon were smooth bore but not any more.

Machine guns did not become illegal, the NFA only placed a tax on them along with additional requirements. The Government has since regulated transferable machine guns to those with sufficient fortune to be able to afford one which is totally inequitable.

UMPs actually are cheaper for HK to make due to the higher polymer use. It's just that everyone wants MP5s so HK has to still make them.

Proper term is enblock clip. The sten comes out the side cause they were used to the sterling, which was a British copy of the German Smeiser.

The Sterling feeds from below and was first specified in 1944. It was first carried in the battle of Arnhem,and was then named the Patchett Machine Carbine Mk I.

He's right, about 10mm having a big come back. Tons of sub-machine gun parts kits have come into this country. And the 10mm is the perfect carbine caliber. A 10mm in a carbine is an awesome gun. I am currently looking for a source for 10mm carbine barrels, cut to fit, sub-machine guns.
@MoxieFirearms
@MoxieFirearms 2 года назад
As for the parts in a subgun, the fireing pin is often just a bump on the front of the bolt. Do not build a sten, they are the least fun to shoot. The fun to fire are to soumi, Yugo M-49, PPS-43/52. With fireballs when chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev. Could be awesome in 10mm.

The Italians are generally credited with the first machine gun ( the Luger with the drum mag was a artillery Luger which was a semi auto Luger that has a stock the drum used in them was originally designed for the mp18 sub machine gun)
@jtilton5
@jtilton5 2 года назад
Hi I think you got that slightly backwards, the drum mag was originally designed for the Luger and the MP 18 had to be made use it too due to Germany not having the resources at the time to devote to making another magazine.

Also you can pick up 40s&w and guns chambered in it all over the place for good prices, especially used police trade-ins

Just my 2 cents on my favorite. Love the 9mm platforms. But I think I have to go with the mp7. The 4.6 X 30 has so much potential. Given the modern environment. That speed beats armor. I know it is a rather mythical creature at the moment. But some development in bullet materials specifically for that round could take the mp7 to new levels. However likely only in the DOD environment.

C&Resnal did a vid on the Pedersen Device... it was junk, be very glad that soldiers never had to use it. Trench shotguns were only worth it once waxed and metal shell casing were issued, the standard issue cardboard one were useless in the water sodden trenches.

Theres a huge hole in the market for glock chassis that use the lower and attach to a complete upper so its like a whole new gun. Glock should have made it long ago. There is at least 1 company making it but its crazy overpriced. I want the psa $200 glock carbine upper 😢

48:24 "Not that 556 ammo is very expensive and 9mm is even less" that statement didn't age well... LMAO just making a joke but damn I wish that was still true just seen a store selling a 50rd box of Tulammo 9mm steel case for $150 and cheap ass box of #9 shotgun shells for $75. I started reloading and have several 1000 rounds of all my main guns I shoot stored away but when I seen that I got pissed because they had an elderly couple there needing ammo. I told that elderly couple that I would sale them some of my ammo and that business owner that he should be turned into the BBB and shut down for gouging people like that.

Y'all didn't play Battlefield 1 apparently, as they have the Pedersen device. Also, the grease gun was incredibly controllable as evidenced by Ian from Forgotten Weapons shooting it full-auto, mainly because it fired at a very low cyclic rate.
