I don't ever remember seeing this one before. I thought that I had seen them from before from the 70's. It only took 50 years for me to finally see this one. I remember a resurgence of 50's music back then. We had 50's days at my highschool sock hop. I remember a movie that promoted the 1950's. And then Happy Days. My Dad helped me with 50's day at the highschool sock hop. He taught me how to dress during that current style. It's strange that he was doing the same as I was just 20 years before then.
This music was so deeply part of coming from the 50 s when i was born.. but it took me the best part of 50 years before i had the chance to hear some of it...... it took time.... time time !!
What a moment in time. In our home, we never missed a show. To grow up watching all these wonderful people and hearing their music brought me so much joy. Let the Midnight Special shine it's ever loving light on me.
Jerry Lee used to play fairly regularly at the Palomino in North Hollywood. It was great to see and hear him in a nightclub venue. I'd also see him occasionally in the audience at some of the other shows. Cool guy.
Only kinda sad thing is these performers - whose songs weren't even 20 years old then - were considered "oldies" acts and couldn't get played anymore on radio except "oldies" stations. Imagine today if Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilera were considered old has-beens who could only be seen in 'oldies' performances.
Had she been born a few decades later Ronnie Spector would have been giving J. Lo. quite a big run for the money. Would have been her spinning around the pole at the Super Bowl at age 50
Thank you for this!! I grew up in Toronto, Canada and every week I would see this show listed in the TV Guide and wanted to watch it so badly. However, sadly, there were no cable stations that picked it up. I tried in vain almost every week to tune in via antenna but just got a vague picture with white noise. Now here I am some 50 years later, in the hospital and have found these and it really means a lot to me to get to see them now, All the best to you and thank you again for these timeless, wonderful shows and fullfilling childhood dreams for me. hehe.
Canadian and Mexican broadcast antennas were usually much stronger than ones in the USA regulated by the FCC. So it didn’t go both ways. In fact Wolfman Jack got his US National exposure broadcasting from Mexico
@@Onteo1 I'm surprised as well... I could pick up Buffalo stations no problem, but channel 13 in Rochester must have had a really weak signal as I wasn't too far away from the lake either.
@@DizzLexic to this day I still can pick up Toronto and Peterborough stations on todays lousy digital car radios. TV works about like it used to back in the day.
I can't believe how after all these years these people are still so talented. It was really cool that The midnight special would go way back and pay honor in tribute to the 50s music . And to get Jerry Lee Lewis as the host was a great idea. Long live rock & roll. 🙏
We Americans who love these artists will play their music 🎶 untill we die and go to heaven Jerry lee is the killer of the piano forever ♾️ in my heart I’ll play his music 🎶 untill I die and go to heaven 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊thanks for this awesome amazing video footage I appreciate it very much 😊😊😊😊😊
Say it each week, but I can't thank Mr. Sugarman/MNS enough for letting those of us who were too young to appreciate these shows when they originally aired, enjoy them now. Very, very appreciative!
OMG THIS IS GREAT. THIS IS MUSIC. LOVE IT. !!all these classics. See how classy they r. All dresesed up and dance in sinc. Awesome. The best music ever. Music today cant compare. Glad this is on itube. More more. 😊
Wow I was going on 6 years old when this was recorded and I have heard and loved many of these songs throughout my 56 years of life. Great video and cheers for posting.
It's so lovely to see Ronnie Spector perform after Phil Spector attempted to destroy her. She dodged a bullet getting out of that marriage alive. The Ronette on the left is actress Chip Fields, mother of actresses Kim Fields and Alexis Fields.
Amazing to see these artists (almost) in their prime. Many were still recording and even having minor hits. Jerry Lee performed his then-current song Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee, which nearly cracked the top 40.
I was thirty-four when this show first aired: so you can see its still a hit with all of us R&R and R&B cats in 2023 - fifty yrs later... Just a testimony as to how good the 'Oldie but Goodies' really were and still are... Where's Chuck Berry when you really want to take things up a notch... Well the Rolling Stones always kept the beat going... They made it look so easy to be a solid talented band with jiving tunes to go around...
Holy Mackeral ! Saw this when it first aired and had my tape cassette recorder going to record the music. Then about 20 years ago, found a bootleg tape but the quality was pretty lousy. Thank you for posting .
All the bad things you hear about Jerry Lee… I interviewed him about a decade after this. He and his wife were the most gracious and welcoming people. Full of Southern hospitality. How do you dance like Chubby and not sound out of breath?
@@normanacree1635Jerry Lee, was IMO, the best of rock and roll and equally in country music. My all time favorite performer. His personal life is irrelevant to his talent for me. He was amazing.
This was re-run in 1976 or 77, when I first saw it, and recorded the whole thing on audio cassette, which I hung onto for many, many years. A few of these clips have shown up recently in inferior quality, but this is the first time I've been able to watch the whole show, for the first time in 45 years. Just, wow. As someone said, it's "oldie heaven."
This is fantastic I live in Melbourne Australia for about 55 years played and learnt piano guitar drums organ synthesiser harmonica etc for years from 4 yo. Thanks to my talented Dad Ted Macmillan We were all born in Chelsea but moved to Edgware due to the bombing of London central I have met just about every great rocker since I wa🌼
Was 6 or 7 . My first direct contact was Wembley Pool Arena 1955 . Dad got 2 tickets to Bil and the Comets. What a night. Somehow I met. him and band at 11pm i was not quite 10 ‘til Someone shouted that kid should be in bed. He said to me can you play Master Barrie? Sure Mr Haley can I play 🏎 1:04:16 white baby sir? Sure 1:04:34 he said .... he said will you allow him . YES they cried and it was all over over in 5 minutes, we rocked to Roll Over Beethoven I thinked they did , you will read about that in a book soon SMILE always bye bye. I wrote this because I discovered Midnight and my favourite JERRY LEE LEWIS. RIP KING. Baz ❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🎹🎹 😃🤸🏾♀️🤸🏾♀️🥋 1:07:36😆🥳🥋🏎😂❤❤😂 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Another joyful Saturday morning thanks to Burt’s generosity. Another exceptional and enjoyable MS full episode has arrived. Thank you for putting a smile on my face and joy in my heart.
It's great seeing Bobby Day. I don't think most people know how many hits he was responsible for under his own name and for others. Freddie Cannon was also cool outside the Romper Room outfit.
Wrong FC Hit...he Should have done the totally Great Buzz Buzz a diddle it...that show his talent and is one of the super car Krusing record of all time.....
Great show! Seeing these Midnight Special Re-runs bring back many good memories. The best music variety show ever on TV. All live and no lip-synching that I was ever aware of. Would like to see a modern version show up but...there would be little talent to feature on it.
The majority of the run of this show was before my time (I was close to 1 year old when the show ended), and obviously the music is before my time, but man does it bring back childhood memories of my parents listening to it. I'm partial to '90s music, but music from the '50s and '60s is top-notch. They don't have harmony and talent like this anymore.
Maravilhoso show. Grandes artistas que deixaram sua contribuição para a melhor música das décadas de 1950/60. Hoje é impossível reunir um grupo tão bom.
I would get off work go get a pizza and go to my sister's apartment to watch this. My dad wouldn't let me watch it at home and back then it was one tv in the house
The top level everything here. The quality of image , Jerry Lee Lewis m c ing , and these playing the music and the singers singing the songs. All great.
Looks like a good lineup for the show after this, May 4, 1973. It included host Johnny Nash, Chi Coltrane, comedians Freeman and Murray (Murray would appear on another NBC show a few years later in another form :)), Tom T. Hall, comedian Andrew Johnson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Kenny Rankin, and The Raspberries.
The 70s was the best decade to be on this Earth❤Good times, people, places and things❤Everything and body is gone now ALL BUT THE MUSIC AND THE MEMORIES
