Ep. 130 SO MANY SMALL MOSAICS! Mosaic Bird, Mosaic Bottle, Mosaic Substrate, Micro Mosaic Pendant & Personalized Mosaic Pet Ornament!
Hey Everyone! Welcome! What am I doing in my studio this week?!? Good question!
First idea: Two mosaic wine glasses to show as examples for an upcoming workshop and maybe keep to use for the holidays.
Idea #2: Prep some liquid panels for mosaic by painting the frame and transferring the images.
Idea #3: Finish another funky chunky bird.
Idea #4: Start on the amazing bottle.
Idea #5: Make an ornament for my dog Peanut. (NO BALLCHAIN)
Idea #6: Make some mosaic jewelry pieces. (Need to pull filati)
Idea #7: Finish the Sacred Heart grouting, edges and wiring.
And the winner is... I'm taking advantage of the beautiful day and I'm pulling filati in bright colors so I can make some floral jewelry! I am set up at my grill, and after I pull my hair back and put on safety goggles, I fire up the torch and get after it! Heat it up. Melt it down. Pull it. Repeat. I finished all six recipes and now I can make some micromosaic jewelry! 7:10 Taking advantage of the nice weather again, I prep the frames and bring them outside to spray paint with Rustoleum Black Enamel paint. This paint takes at least 2 hours to dry to the touch.
8:05 LOOK what I found!!!! Some terrific charm letters for the personalized mosaic pet ornament I am making for my dog, Peanut! I used E6000 to adhere some beautiful silver lined beads to the edge. Then I switched to Weldbond adhesive and filled in the body with a variety of tiny tiles in matte, glossy and irridized finishes in white.
TIP: For a small grouting job like this ornament, I use a grocery bag to contain my mess and then toss the whole thing! So easy.
Once the grout is set up, I glue the letters on with E6000 and finish with a heart and white ribbon. Yay!
11:35 I'm all set up to make a micro mosaic daffodil pendant. For the first time, I am using putty from DiMosaico so that I have more time to make my design. www.dimosaico.... It is a bit oily and has NO instructions or information other than the website info, including that it may take several months to fully cure. I fill the bezel about 1/2 way so there is room for the filati. Then I start with the trumpets on the daffodils and slowly add the rest of the petals. Once the three flowers are done, I add stems and leaves in a variety of greens. The putty allowed me to take my time and cut pieces without the rush of Apoxie Sculpt. I use a combination of my nippers for bigger filati and a diamond grit file for the smaller pieces to score and break it.
15:00 Next up is the purple funky chunky bird! Several people asked how I finished the edge, so I show the shabby chic finish and just tape it off for grouting. In the meantime, I'm adding teardrops, triangle mini tiles, mirror bits, more purple faceted beads, special jewelry bits, teal and purple irridized tiles, purple stained glass, lavender stained glass, big pink beads, teal tiles, etc. I use E6000 for any beads and Weldbond for the tiles and glass.
16:32 The spray paint on the frames is dry, so I pull off the taped areas. Then, using carbon transfer paper and a ball point pen, I trace the flower images from my garden onto the substrates.
17:15 Finally, I start on the bottle! I have decided to go with a multi-colored theme and so I begin by adding a strand of mirrored seed beads around the neck. I had to hold it for a minute so it wouldn't slide. Then I added more beads, being careful to check them for slippage as the E6000 was setting up.
Then I show all the little things I worked on this week! Not bad for a short holiday week!
