In this video, I do a "quick" comparison of the XO-1 and Slash 4x4 LCG Platforms. This is a good intro for those who are curious about the XO-1, but have never had a chance to play with it.
Bottom Line: I really like the platform... but there's always room for improvement. Stay tuned for a LOT more XO-1 content.

This is the first RC video of any sort that I have enjoyed listening to and watching. Your delivery is soothing and not in any way irritating. I am attempting to build a speed dedicated car out of a slash 4x4 this was a big help thank you.

I’ve recently done a stretch slash street eliminator up to a 1/7 scale, buddy of mine was racing me with his xo1 against my regular street eliminator, well he crashed it before we could get going, hasn’t fixed it yet cost. Though he has a felony, infraction, and all the other big cars, I just laughed.

The XO-1 and Arrma 1/7 scales have the same wheelbase, so the big difference with them is the motor mounting position, battery layout, and overall weight. It looks like the xo-1's lighter weight actually works against it in some speed applications because the extra weight gives more weight on the wheels for stability, but it's not an unsolvable problem.

I love this vid man, watched it a half dozen times. I am going to be hitting you up with questions soon. I am building a cheap-ish 2wd X-O1. Proline HD Transmission set up in a midmotor configuration on the xo1 chassis. Reduced internal drag and increased efficiency should make for a fun exercise in car building 😀

I had something planned with my daughter, so I couldn't make the RUN DMV event. I did get to do a little testing with the XO-1, though. This car is teaching me about the dark side of buying used. I love it, but it looks like the diff fluid is the wrong weight. as soon as I get around 50 mph under hard acceleration, one of the wheels diffs out and it snaps into a spin. I should have this sorted out shortly, but it's just a pain dealing with this stuff.

I said this on a forum once, years ago when the X0-1 hit the shelves, and nobody cared to see what I noticed. Now do what I’d like to see, and make an Off-Road X0-1, or a 100mph short course truck. Also while I’m on, I think this could use a Dodge MS4 body, just cause I’m old.
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 3 года назад
Funny you mention this. I've actually been toying with the idea of building an off-road XO-1 for a while now, especially since the ARRMA 1/7th scales have the same wheelbase, so I could use one of their bodies to give it the right "nasty" look. Thanks for the comment!

i head slash rear shock towers on an x0-1 slash hybrid I was making. I think the taller rear tower gives too much suspension travel. everytime i compressed the suspension my rear diffuser would hit the ground.
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 8 лет назад
+Ariel Santiago Good point! It's not an off road chassis and all that suspension action then needs to be limited.
@TheMostAriel
@TheMostAriel 8 лет назад
E-revo shocks worked out perfectly. I have heard some guys just use turnbuckles to limit all travel.
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 8 лет назад
+Ariel Santiago Even with hard springs and high speeds, your suspension is doing a lot of work. I have some onboard GoPro footage from inside Dizzy during a 55 mph testing run and I was amazed at how much suspension action was going on. If you replace the shocks with turnbuckles, those road forces still have to go somewhere. Plus, there's a greater chance at least one wheel will loose contact with the ground and spin, sapping power away from your run and potentially causing a spinout.

Why waste time reinventing the WHEEL? Just upgrade the weak parts of the WHEEL.
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 8 лет назад
+Donald “NOT PLAYING1970” Byrd Cheapness is a powerful motivator. LOL!!! Seriously though, I kinda "reinvented" the XO-1 with Dizzy, but saved a few hundred dollars in the process. An XO-1 /Slash hybrid would let someone have an actual XO-1 for about the price I paid to build Dizzy. That's not too shabby.
@DonaldByrd1970
@DonaldByrd1970 8 лет назад
I understand the reasoning for doing so. I for one am not the type of person to take as many routes as you to achieve the same goals. I will however take a chassis from the X01 and modify it make more from less. Congrats to your projects and hope you achieve the results you are looking for.
@RCPhysics

+Donald “NOT PLAYING1970” Byrd My wife often teases me about making things more complicated than they need to be. 😌 That being said, one of the points of my channel is to encourage people to engage their "hustle genes" and find creative solutions to life's challenges. If I can inspire a kid to turn a Slash into an XO-1, I might also be able to convince him/her to look at science or engineering as a career field. Yes, I'm trying to use RCs as a gateway drug. But an engineering addiction can change lives in the positive direction.

@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 5 лет назад
Actually, I was able to complete this Slash / XO-1 hybrid rolling chassis for about the same cost as a Slash 4x4 / Rally rolling chassis, but this was a few years ago when Dollar Hobbyz was still selling Traxxas parts at a DEEP discount. It's funny that you bring up a $400 used XO-1 because that's about what I paid for the used "real" XO-1 in the video. The point of the hybrid was a little different, though. This build was for the guy who liked the look and stance of the XO-1, but didn't need the full performance package. Since posting this, I've heard from a lot of guys who wanted the look and attitude of the XO-1, but just wanted to throw it around a parking lot or drift with it. These guys could pick up a rolling chassis online , or a box of parts from a buddy and combine them with spare parts they may already own to make something fun that costs less than half of the full XO-1 sticker (or less). Thanks for watching!

@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 8 лет назад
+Dirty263 You have a point. The body in stock form will work, but high speed fluttering increases drag a bit. The bigger factor is that reinforced bodies really help out in a high speed wreck. I forgot to increase my brakes at RUN DMV #4 and Dizzy couldn't stop in time to miss a curb. The car hit at speed and flew at least 15 feet before landing on asphalt. The fiberglass took most of the hit and I only lost $10 worth of plastic pieces. I'm pretty sure Dizzy would not have survived without the fiberglass hull.

Does the 1.75 oz of tape weight help the xo1 drive a bit easier? Thx
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 8 лет назад
+RC FANATIC416 The XO-1 is a bit rear heavy, so a little weight up front is not a bad thing. The front body mount I'm using was a used part with weights already applied by the previous owner. It's not the ideal weight yet, but it's definitely not hurting the handling. I was waiting until I finished all my internal mods and got my run-batteries in before doing my final weight balance. I like to have the front wheels fairly well loaded to help keep the nose down, but I don't like carrying ballast when I don't have to. I'll probably use my GPS and maybe an on-board camera as my main "weights" up front and see how that feels.

Are you looking for "speed" wheels or something cheap to run around on? The XO-1's wheels are slightly larger in diameter than standard 1:8 scale on-road wheels. I've found that cheap 1:8 scale buggy wheels from ebay are fine for cheap basher tires to drift around parking lots with. Here are links to 2 videos I did about these types of wheels & tires. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Y-Vde5-dhE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qhZIWkaC-PE.html If you are looking for good "speed" wheels, You should check out this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wJ7KLeBU77w.html For the XO-1, you can contact Gone Banana's and Ric can put custom foam tires on any wheel you like.

@RCPhysics

@@BanditRCracing Any of the ebay 1:8 buggy wheels should work then. They usually have diameters of ~110mm which is just a little smaller than the stock XO-1 wheels. Just check the listing before buying to make sure they aren't smaller like the ~95mm tires. Also, make sure to tape the insides of the wheels like I did in my videos so you don't get ballooning.

I just can’t take to much s..... there s A LOT best brand up there BROOO for 17mm adapters why why get Traxxas please give a badass explanation
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 5 лет назад
It's really simple. I built that hybrid chassis to sell. If I picked an aftermarket brand for the 17mm adapter, I would have to explain why I thought that brand was best and someone would probably disagree, so it would limit the market. Going with Traxxas was about the same overall price, but this would be acceptable to more people since it is the stock part which works just fine. The think about building items specifically to sell is that you have to make decisions based on what would have the broadest appeal, even if it's not your personal preference.

Rhouse21 does the slash 4x4 shock towers fits the xo- thanks i subed.1
@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 7 лет назад
The answer is a yes and no. The Slash 4x4 and XO-1 use the same diff cases, so you can bolt Slash shock towers to an XO-1. However, the XO-1 uses shorter towers because it doesn't need as much suspension travel. Specifically, the XO-1 uses an aluminum Slash 4x4 front tower on its rear and an even shorter XO-1 specific tower for its front. You can however set up an XO-1 with Slash 4x4 towers, but you just need to be careful to set the suspension geometry to get the car handling properly. I almost did this myself, but the price difference between the Slash and XO-1 towers was pretty small, so I just bought the XO-1 parts.

@RCPhysics
@RCPhysics 7 лет назад
The XO-1 uses 6mm output shafts on their CVD shafts. However, you can just use Slash 4x4 shafts front and rear with the Slash hubs and you can even use Slash diffs. I built and sold a "Slash-O-1" exactly like that and the buyer was really happy with it.

Stretched 1:8 scale actually. The Traxxas 1:10 truck are really the same size as most 1:8 scales, but the plastic chassis are light enough to get good performance out of 1:10 scale power systems.
