On exactly the same day you lost your mast, a key fitting on my spinnaker broke off the mast, forcing me to cross the Atlantic in the trade winds with no spinnaker. I was feeling sorry for myself. I see now that I was fortunate. Things could have been much worse. You handled it like a pro Martin. Hope all is repaired by now.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video in English and sharing it with us. To take the time to record 2 versions of this just to share with us is quite remarkable.
Everyone has already said it but it's worth repeating: Your calmness and resilience during an incredibly stressful situation are inspiring. So glad you weren't hurt. Looking forward to seeing you and Jambo cruising again!
Martin: You have the best attitude of any sailor that I have ever met! I hope you get everything repaired in time for sailing home before the hurricane season, but there are worse things than a summer in Grenada.
I’m so glad you came through that unhurt Martin. And your calmness in getting things under control, recovering what functionality you could, and making a plan is truly admirable. You’re a helluva guy with an incredibly positive outlook on things. I wish you, physically and mentally, and Jambo a speedy refit.
700 miles from New-York City towards the Azores, my backstay broke while in a storm on June 22nd. Thankfully the mast stood up and I rigged a temporary backstay using a spare halyard. Nevertheless I had to turn around and slowly sail with 3reefs in the main sail towards Halifax. My goal of reaching the Azores shall wait just like you. I hope everything turns out well for you. Cheers
I love your irrepressible optimism Martin! This is one of the most challenging things to deal with and you took it all in your stride and showed what a great guy you are! Your reflection - ‘oh well its only metal, it will be fixed, no-one is hurt, all will be well’ is typical of you and an inspiration to anyone who takes on this type of challenge. To do it all alone and in good humour is awesome! Love the channel! Cant wait for your next adventure!
I take my hat off to you for your quick understanding that it has happened move on. It would be so easy to wallow in the event. Wishing you a speedy solution and fix.
Thank you Martin for the english version! I really hope you are already back in the sea and met a good deal with the insurance for all repairs needed to make Jumbo even stronger 💪 Luciano
You are such a calm person, a great guy to have around in a crisis. Congratulations on dealing with such a horrid situation so well. Thanks for doing the English versions, I did learn German at school but sadly didn't keep it up. Great update 👍
When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade - with ice - and whipped cream - and a cherry on top - and a shot of gin! Your knowledge, tenacity and "what if" preparedness - along with a modicum of luck and a generous nod or two from Neptune made your next adventure possible. I am so glad you survived this. It seems you're not done yet, Martin! Good for us! 😋
Well if it comes to it, best die calm and relaxed in your sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and panicking like the passengers on his bus when they went over the cliff. Not a true story.
Well done, brother. Nobody got hurt, boat is still floating, you've got enough fuel to make it to Horta. Good luck with the repairs. If you need anything on Horta give me a shout, I've got some great friends there.
Martin, This is the first video of yours that I've seen. I am amazed at how calm and rational you are during such a crisis. Your priorities are in the right place. Nobody was injured and the mast can be replaced and the other repairs necessary can be done, with some expense. I'm a motor-boater, not a sailor, but I hope that if there is ever an emergency I can remain composed and level-headed as you were here. Wishing you many more adventures ahead on the water and beyond. Cheers.
Glad you are alright Martin. The boat can be fixed. You are a special person. I was very impressed with your attitude and the way you handled the serious situation. Godspeed.
@@mjambo697 I think the biggest fear sailor have must be to loose the rig and or hole the boat. I believe you would make a great episode covering your approach to solving the downed rig and the tools you used to clean up the rig and get underway. So glad you ok. Will login to watch your next live stream.
So sorry for you Martin these things happen but you are handling this unfortunate catastrophe very well ,we all love your content and output thank you for showing us some of the downsides of ocean crossing ,it,s not always great is it ,but you handled it so professionally wish you well in your endeavours to have Jambo repaired
Thanks for sharing your story! Very happy that you are safe, and made it back to land. The hull looks like it has not been damaged by the dismasting, which is a good thing too. All the best!!
Sorry to hear/see you lost your mast. The good thing is you got back to a safe place without any injuries! Hope all is well now and fixing Jumbo wasn't too big of a problem. Fair winds!
You handled it like the Pro that you are 👍. Worrying that the mast would give way like that in just moderately challenging conditions. Glad you are OK and look forward to further updates. Great work.
Martin, hats off to you for persevering. That is one well deserved anchor beer. JAMBO is a good ship, she took care of you and don't dismast halfway across Atlantic. Goes to show that anything can happen. Gear fails and that's that. Glad you are safe, that's all that matters. Wish you and your boat a speedy return to the ocean. Cheers from Canada
You were so calm on camera, did you have a “freak out” moment before you started filming? I’d have needed hours for enough adrenaline to leave my system before I could be so calm. Way to adapt to a bad situation and move forward-respect!
When I was on my way to St. Martin and calmed down I made a good plan and realised that all is not too bad. Thank you very much and always fair winds 😀⛵⛵
So glad you are safe Martin. It is good for all sailors to see this video as a reminder of what can happen. It is the first video I have seen that shows a demasting. So good that you took the numbers of the mast to replace it and that you managed to get your autohelm working and rig up an aerial. That happened in April. Has the boat a new mast now?
I’m glad your ok and willing to share the experience show us it’s still ok just a bit of change in your adventure. Keep going you can handle anything now👍👍
So sorry to see you lost your mast. You remained so calm and philosophical about the problem. You are a great sailor. The series is very informative and fascinating. Thank you for taking the trouble to do an English version. Good luck.
So sorry that you lost Jambos mast, but it is great that you are ok and not injured. You had some good luck that the mast did not break something in the hull. I would be grateful to hear what went wrong with the mast to learn and fix issues. Hope that Jambo has a new mast allready.
Thank you! Unfortunately, the root cause remains unclear, as the mast would have been examined, which is now on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The surveyor, who was on board, did not come to a better conclusion, too. The rigg is just 3 years old. Hence, we can only speculate. It could be that a starboard shroud broke or ripped out of its socket, or the mast attachment gave up. Since the mast was still well supported by the lower shrouds, it broke off in the middle, only to collapse completely shortly afterwards. But as I said, that's just a guess. 😀⛵⛵
I’m so sorry you went through this experience, you are a very cool, capable dude / sailor. Good luck with your repairs . I’m following your journey and wish you the best.
Oh no Martin! So sorry. You take such good care of your boat so what a surprise. I’m always so impressed with how calm you always are, even in a dismasting! I wish you a speedy retrofit sir.
Hello Martin you finally broken Jambo! I do really enjoy the hard sailing and the enthusiasm you have!- totally glad no injuries to yourself. And as you say it's just metal and wire it will be fixed. I hope the logistical side will not prove to be too difficult for you . Wishing you a speedy repair 💕 take care my friend.
Hi Martin, I'm delighted you are safe back in port. A horrible experience but you clearly handled it incredibly well. Thank you for showing the darker side of sailing and the real dangers. I hope the repairs happen quickly and your back out at sea soon. Best wishes and fair winds. G.
I was quite shocked in the morning when I had the first moment to think about the situation. Yes, the mast was gone, but I could handle, was not injured. I made a good plan and it all did not look that bad. Thank you and best regards 😀⛵⛵
MARTIN... I BEEN FOLLOW YOU FOR A FEW MONTHS..... I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR VIDEOS, AND I THANK YOU FOR THAT.... I WISH TO YOU THE BEST... AND HOPE YOU CAN RECOVER YOUR MAST SOON .... I SEND TO YOU MY KIND REGARDS ... FAIR WINDS ... CHEERS 🍾🥂 ....
Well done Martin , your safe and well that's what matters , everything else will be repaired for sure and hopefully you'll be sailing again soon . Sometimes I think these things happen for a reason . Look forward to your next video .
Even though we didn’t meet I our paths crossed in the Caribbean this winter. The way you react is amazing and I wish you all the best. Next time I see your boat I’ll have a cold Bier for you!
Good luck. Your actions proved that you are a survivor. Excellent problem solving! Fair winds in the future for you. I hope you get what you need delivered soon enough.
A great English poet, Rudyard Kipling wrote a verse about heroism and moral courage. He wrote: “If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same…” That was one of the definitions of being a man. Your approach to your difficulties shows your strength.
That is a very difficult situation loosing the mast for you on such a long voyage. All the best getting new rigging and sails. Good that you have insurance.
Martin, IAM so sorry a major break like dismast, But you always with your positive attitude like no big deal…Amazing man you are Martin God bless you I hope you find the cause, could have been corrosion on the standing rigging? I hope jambo is back 100% to sail again by now.waiting for your next video to see how hard was to get fixed. Thank you Martin
Oi! So sorry this happened Martin😔 Kudos to your steadfast, no problem attitude that every sailor must possess! If I were a betting man you would be my horse in this race!💪 Best of luck and Godspeed as you work through this situation.🙏
I look at it like this, you will probably be the only man at most yacht club bars that has been dismasted in the Atlantic and live to tell the tale……and post it to RU-vid. Fair winds and following seas 🍻
Martin, Having suffered dismasting at sea before, I really feel your pain. Luckily, my situation was nowhere near as bad as yours, as I was only about 4 to 5 miles offshore. You handled it like a real champ, massive well done and at the end of the day, you are safe, that's the main thing. Hopefully your insurance company pulls it out of the bag and you are back on the water as soon as possible. Rgds, Steve
I feel sorry for your dismasting, Steve. Key is not getting injured. I made a good plan and it all did not look that bad next day. Thank you and best regards 😀⛵⛵
