@@tedtalksstamps I give the award to Bhutan, by a lot (even if I just learned here that Poland was first with silk) Austria did aromatic chocolate too (Bhutan had scratch-n-sniff flowers in 1975), Bhutan also printed on steel, molded cardboard (art brushstrokes) molded plastic, lots of lenticular - even a large circular space souvenir sheet. Thank you for another great episode! I am not a fan of extraordinary stamp materials which do not fit in my albums. However, I am a country collector and I need to find every issue from the counties I collect - like Austria and Switzerland - both in MNH and used conditions. There are two issues which comes to my mind when talking about interesting material; 1. 2019 Austria issue (Michel #3470) was the first Crypto collectible of the world. It has the same material and the size with a credit card. In 2020, Austria Post has issued another set of Crypto stamps which I have not received yet. 2. Another country I collect, Faeroe Island, has issued a single stamp (Michel #863, 2016) with fish skin affixed on. this looks really nice. Anyway, thank you for sharing another great video with us...

I remember being so excited when I was a kid and got my first triangle stamp. I thought that was the most unusual stamp until the day I got my banana stamp. I think I was 16 at the time. I was astonished a number of years ago when someone put a gold stamp on the envelope and the post office actually accepted it. I think it was issued maybe 20 or so years ago as a "collectible" novelty but it was not actually good for postage. I think it was gold foil similar in design to an actual stamp issue and was embossed. It was a nice design but other than the gold content I think it was worthless. On another occasion I got a Christmas card in the mail that had a Christmas seal instead of a stamp on it and nobody at the post office noticed it. I still have both but don't keep them officially in my stamp collection because they are not stamps. I keep them with my collection of interesting covers that are void of stamps next to my unused postcard collection. Generally, I don't seek out what I call oddball stamps. Such novelties don't really appeal to me. I have a small number and keep them but I don't seek them out and won't buy one for myself. to me a stamp is a piece of paper with a design printed on it, preferably with gum on the back and perforations around the perimeter. I would collect the wood ship stamps though. I think those are neat but I like old wood ships.

I have always loved the unusual so Bhutan was my favorite country to collect. I got my first 3D stamps from the 60's and I was hooked. I got all thre 3D's, gold foil, silk, steel and some that feel like they are printed on cardboard (they make the page hard to turn). Unfortunately my collection stops at 1970 so I do not have the record stamps. Question. If you play them, are they used? LOL!

I know what you mean. I call Bhutan my guilty pleasure. "Real" philatelists aren't supposed to collect Bhutan. These days, though, unusual stamps are the norm. I mean, a stamp printed on real toilet paper? (Yep. I ordered that one, too. LOL)

I remember being a young kid and going downtown to shop with my mother. We walked by a stamp store and I wanted to go in. There they were the 1967 Bhutan 3D stamps. I remember getting all excited and jumping up and down and saying "Mom look at these. Aren't they the neatest stamps you have ever seen". Can I have them please. She asked me how much I had. I emptied my pockets and came up with $2.00. She looked at the man behind the counter who gave me a big smile and he said "the young man is in luck because they are $1.78". Looking back now I am sure he lowered the price because he could see how excited I was. They were new so they were not pictured in my book so my mother gave me some photo mounts and I put them on a blank page. I was so proud I showed them to everyone who came over to the house. I just looked up the Scott value and they are $31.80. I will never know who that stamp dealer was but his generosity got me very excited about stamps that still continues till this day.

@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps 3 года назад
I apologize for the late reply, Rory. I've been reluctant to mention value much, because many collectors are turned off about discussing values, and feel that other collectors' hearts aren't in the right place if they are concerned with it. I find nothing wrong with it, myself. As in any collectible area, there is a wide spectrum of values, from the ultra-expensive rarities, down to the cheapest ones which are "worth" less than the paper they're printed on. I will start incorporating catalogue and retail values into my presentations. I think it's important information to know, if only to provide a reference point and to let viewers know if this is a stamp they can afford to pursue. Thanks for watching.
