I have the same problem and I am an adult. It really affects one's self confidence when you notice people laughing at you but they never tell you why. I end up keeping quiet when I'm out or if I talk I try to dodge the letter s and it becomes even more embarrassing. Keeping the tongue tip behind the lower front teeth seems to be improving the situation.

It always bothers me whenever he speaks the S sound. Often we can't understand what he's saying. A PUZZLE sound PADDLE, hes FISH is FIT.

Hello! I have another video for producing the /s/ here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rotbw6YL9vw.html Also, it's possible that instead of being a motor difficulty (not assuming the right position), it's a Phonological problem (the child is not very aware of when the /s/ is required in a word). If it is, it's a process called Stopping, and you can learn about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8It3FQ-bLg8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eXH2MRvUmng.html Hope these help ✨

age: 24. i have the most common type of lisp (interdental) i want to say "used to" because i think and believe that i already fixed it but i felt like it won't be perfectly gone until my teeth get aligned with braces (currently open bite) so even if i am pronouncing "s" correctly, it still appear as if i have lisp because my tounge would still show given the gap between my lower and upper front teeth. also, like everyone else i never realized it until i watch a recorded video of myself. never noticed it even when practicing in front of the mirror. i was also easily understood when i deliver messages but the fact that my lisp shows in videos honestly affects my self-esteem. i hate it when my friends record videos of us, i cant help but feel awkward. it''s also hard for me when work demands videos given our wfh setup, even had a time when i dont want to speak to people anymore as i feel like they would see noting but the way i pronounce "s". want to pursue a career that requires interaction with talents. i have no problems with my verbal skills, but i feel like having this lisp affects the way i sound. /sighs;
@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 4 дня назад
I can feel your frustration, and I'm sorry it's affecting your self-esteem. Just based on your description of your teeth, you may still be able to make minor adjustments, such that your tongue does not go beyond "the cage" of your teeth, even if your mouth is slightly ajar. I'm trying a different position: slightly more curled tongue-tip, so that the sides of the tip are forming a smaller tunnel for the air to flow through the middle. (That might be hard to imagine, but I hope it gets you experimenting on your tongue positions more). Also -- we are all so much more than our speech production. ✨ It's tough, especially when we sometimes feel bad about things that we wish were different, but you sound like a person of so much self-awareness, honesty, and determination, and those are so much more important than a crisp /s/ 😉 Good luck, and I hope you don't give up!

Excellent video. But I have one question about how many Gen z'ers pronounce words like: didn't or couldn't. They seem to come out like: "I dinnent" or "I connent." Another pronunciation I don't understand is instead of important, it comes out "impornnant" I 've been a voice actor for five decades and none of my producers have ever suggested I eliminate the "T" sound in any of my words. What's up with no "T" sound in young people's words?🤔
@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 4 дня назад
Thank you! Regarding these examples you gave above, I don't think it's a generation thing, because it isn't common in our culture, where English is a dominant 2nd language. Instead, I believe it could be a affected by cultural and regional accents in the US? For example, the way I said these words in my head (based on how you spelled them) remind me of accents found in the South. From a Speech-Language Pathologist perspective, it could also be a Phonological Process -- a simplification of certain words -- and in this case, it drops certain consonants to blend a succeeding consonant, like a co-assimilation. That was interesting of you to observe, thanks for reaching out ✨

Is it normal for the sides of the tongue to press into the sides of the upper teeth to the point that marks are formed when making the s sound? I’m trying to fix my speech and would like to avoid shifting my teeth through improper tongue placement. Can you further explain this? When I curl my tongue to form a “wind tunnel” it slightly touches my front pre-molars. Is that okay? I also normally slightly move my tongue to the right when making the s sound.... yet another mistake that I must correct. Any tips of visualization to center my tongue position?
@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 4 дня назад
I'm so sorry that it's taken me 2 years to see this, but no: if marks are formed, that means there is too much pressure, that may cause you discomfort, and not really improving airflow? I hope you have made progress since then, and wish you the best ✨

@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 3 года назад
Hello! Do you mean that even at rest, your tongue spills out of your cage (teeth) when closed? If so, it seems that anatomically your tongue is larger for your oral cavity, and there are no corrective treatments for that. So I suggest we find you a compensatory technique to find the best alternative placement to help you produce the sounds better. Let me know if you want a consultation with me. ✨

Hello! I have a dentalized lisp and I didn’t notice it until I started recording videos of myself doing it. What’s really weird is that it gets worse when ice touches my tongue. I’ve tried everything you’ve mentioned and it still doesn’t work. I have no way of messaging you on any social media so I was wondering if you have any tips for me? I’m really insecure about it lol, btw I also have braces so would that effect it in any way?
@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 2 года назад
Hello HoranDog! It's difficult to give you advice without seeing you, because most of the tips here are for very general descriptions of the problem. So if these techniques did not work, then likely the cause of your lisp may be something I didn't cover. If you could send me links to the videos you've recorded of yourself, I may have a better impression of the problem. Some things to consider: - like I said in the video, it may be a structural issue. Yes, braces may affect this if you have elastics that get in the way of your tongue's movement. Gap teeth may also cause "whistling" sounds. - when anything cold touches our skin, our vessels constrict and our muscles become less pliant. This may effect mobility, range of motion, and control of your tongue, if your tongue has any weakness of sorts. - dentalized lisps are usually problems with tongue placement and/or pressure applied on the ridge, thus causing the air to escape in the wrong places. Could you try finding different parts of your ridge to put your tongue again (you said you've tried this), but this time, make a "T" / "tuh" sound, then from that same placement, make the sound effect of like a deflating tire (tsssss). It's a helpful transition sounds. It'd really be better if I had more detail. I'm not sure if you meant you have no social media accounts (because I do: they're @teacherkayetalks on both Facebook and Instagram) -- you may send videos there too. I may be able to give more specific advice. Hope this helps! ✨

@TeacherKayeTalks
@TeacherKayeTalks 2 года назад
Hello Bry!

Hi Mart! It would be better to get an assessment where I can see you, because I'd have to check if you have any anotomical issues causing your lisp (like shape and size of your tongue, or your jaw area). Usually, if there are no physical issues, a lateral lisp really needs a lot of practice directing your air forward instead of to the side. Have you tried practicing with the straw like I suggested? If you'd like to consult with me, you can set an appointment on my Facebook page: facebook.com/teacherkayetalks/ I'd love to help you, and it may only take a session and some offline practice on your end. Hi (Nilagang Patatas - yum!) Yes, sa taas talaga, and kung sa baba talaga yung habitual oral placement mo, that explains the lisp! I made another /s/ video here: /s/ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rotbw6YL9vw.html Kung masubukan mo na lahat ng tips ko, and you think nothing is stil working, I will really need to assess you personally to understand why.
