Jim talks with Curtis Yarvin about his proposal to replace our current government with a monarchy, part of an ongoing exploration of problems with and alternatives to democracy. They discuss a regime-change thought experiment beginning with liquid democracy, the goals of democracy & the feeling of being in charge, why our government doesn't actually have an executive branch, democracy's broken steering linkage, the negative characterization of "politics," optimizing liquid democracy to take & hold power, delegation as power projection, why the French people didn't revolt against the Jacobins, forces that led to Trump's election, the relationship between binding & power, the Yellow Vest protests, the problem of finding a philosopher-king, democracy as a claim to legitimacy, our minimal level of political activation, Julius Caesar's innovation, joyous regime change, monarchy as a unifying force, polarization as a product of institutional design, monarchic regimes in recent history & their relevance, and much more.

Yarvin is like a beer. If you enjoy beer. When kids try beer.... It tastes yucky. To sort of honestly be real here. Kids are not wrong about beer tasting yucky. It's that we as beer drinkers get used to it. Alcohol for anyone who enjoys it. At first... Is an acquired taste... Monarchy is beer. And Curtis is convincing me that it's an acquired taste. I don't know how I'd feel about a king. But. Curtis is at least pointing out our weaknesses in America by explaining why we should have a monarchy.

I think what his logic is, is that who would represent you better? A king or a bureaucracy of unelected people? There’s also the historical fact that monarchies have been more effective

What I find baffling about Yarvin is that he separates Power and Capital (Left and Right) when in practice, the overlap is nearly complete.
@srinivasdeverakonda4310
@srinivasdeverakonda4310 Год назад
I think Yarvin is saying that the Left cares about power more and Right cares about money more. Ofcourse, power and money go hand in hand and what's why politicians on both sides of the aisle are bedfellows and democratic political theatre is actually a circus side show.

What did the trump administration do that was THAT bad compared to the never ending shitshow that characterizes most? Five me your most compelling case. He seems reasonable enough to me, minus his off color comments on ocassion and megalomania. But he didn't actually do anything wrong as far as I can tell. Trump 2024 want cheap gas again

What DT failed at, like all conservatives fail at, is creating actual victories. One thing I picked up from yarvin, is that thing he says about Victory: “A victory can only be a victory if it decreases the enemies ability to win another victory.” Many of DT’s ‘victories’ - like the wall (which I liked) - emboldened the enemy. Same thing with DeSantis’ ‘victories.’ Much of what people say his successes are, are things that have actually emboldened the other side. Like that parenting bill. It’s a direct attack. It makes them aware, and reinvigorates ’em. If it makes the other side stronger, if it gives them more power, it’s a loss.

Why did Curtis say "we vote for everything except the president"? Was he being literal, isn't it the exact opposite?
@butlerbees6639
@butlerbees6639 8 месяцев назад
It was in the context of a liquid or solid democracy. There’s no president to vote for in that system. During that segment, his point is that people will disengage from a system where they can “vote for everything except a president.” If you have a democracy where people don’t engage, you have a defunk government. Whereas, if a block of voters voted to give all of their voting power to a single figure, they’ve maximized the power and effectiveness of democracy.
