Today we do a review and tasting of Four Roses Single Barrel and then add a splash of Old Limestone Mixing Water for an A/B Comparison.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I've been drinking Four Roses Small Batch and i have to say it's one of my favorites. Maybe a Four Rose review between the regular, single barrel, and small batch? It's great bourbon though. Thanks for the videos gentlemen. Keep them coming.

So you can buy a pound of calcium carbonate for like $9 online. I did a little reading online, and if the internet is to be believed, Lexington's water, which should be close to Lawrenceburg's, is about 100 ppm CaCO3. Since there's about 4L to a gallon of water, you could just take a $0.99 gallon of distilled water and dissolve around 400mg CaCO3 into it to get roughly the same product as that $17 bottle of water. Total cost would be about $1/gallon (400g is about 0.09% of that $9 bag.) 400 mg isn't a lot, so unless you've got a high-end scale at home, you might have a hard time getting the ratios exact, but getting close to the same product for a fraction of the cost sounds good to me.

The tough part is that, at room temp, CaCO3 has a solubility of roughly 15 mg/L. Lowering the temperature (yes, CaCO3 dissolves better in cold water) will help some, but there's no way you're getting 400 ppm CaCO3 into distilled water.

Four Roses Small Batch and Single Barrel have always been two of my go-to bourbons since I've been of legal age. For the money I think Small Batch beats out many other similarly-priced bottles, and it's usually $10 cheaper than the Single Barrel. I also think they had the best distillery tour when I visited Lexington with my buddies, cheap ticket and very knowledgeable staff. We did Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Woodford in that order drinking a fifth of bourbon between each distillery. So I kind of forget Woodford and definitely forget what happened later on in Lexington. Little did we know when we got to Kentucky that the distilleries aren't like wineries and we could only drink 1-2 oz total, so the solution was keep the water cups and buy a fifth at the gift shop. Next time we'll remember to eat lunch and drink water. I do have a question for you about Four Roses. Have you tried their two Japanese-only whiskey - Super Premium and Black Label? The tour guide talked a lot about them but they had nothing to try at the distillery. I'm curious if those versions are much closer to Japanese whiskey than they are to bourbons.

I got a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel for Christmas, never had it before. Trying it out right now as I watch this review. It is absolutely delicious! Definitely a hot bourbon, you may add a few drops of water if you're not a fan, but the flavor is phenomenal. I don't mind standard Four Roses as an everyday bourbon especially for cocktails, but this single barrel is truly next level. I'm very impressed.

Thanks for doing a video on the water. I've found it does different things to different bourbons but nothing has been overly spectacular. I'm glad you tasted it by itself bc it does have a nice mineral taste. It's not $17 though. That bottle is more like $10 and you can get it cheaper if you buy more. But like I said, I've found it does make a difference but nothing spectacular. But it's a good conversation starter for sure and something to look cool on the whiskey shelf.

I finally stepped up my budget and I am delighted by this bottle. My question is about single barrel vs cask strength? If adding water separates molecules in the bourbon in the glencairn, wouldn't proofing down cask strength lead to different whiskies that end up in each bottle of the same barrel unless they mixed it very thoroughly and bottled immediately?

Funny you mentioned about the different waters. When I started out I used to use tap water as Scotland has a 'soft' water that generally is purer than the water you'll get in England for example. However the house I'm in (until I move in a few weeks so this may change) has pretty poor pipes so the water coming in doesn't taste great, and is way more minerally and chemically than I think it ought to be, and you do notice this in certain whiskies. I switched to bottled water a few months ago and I think it does help bring out some whiskies better than it would with tap water where I'd always pick up that slight mineral - even metallic at times - note.

Something a little off topic and something that is very important that could make for a great video.1)I have noticed in all the videos that the light coming in from the window shines directly on the bottles of whisk[e]y,how does light(not forgetting the UV RAYS) effect the whisk[e]y in the bottle over time, could it perhaps change the color, the taste or cause any other chemical reactions?2)Any tips on how to store ones whisk[e]y like they do for wines, store in a dark area, bright area, damp or even a dry area perhaps?3)With so many whisk[e]y tasting glasses available on the market, how do they compare to each other in your years of experience in tasting and why specifically have you chosen to use the Glencairn Glass?
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 7 лет назад
1st, yes light negatively affects the whisky, similar to wine. We have massive curtains we pull across the windows when we're not shooting. Store whisky just like wine, but without setting it on its side. That will eat the cork. 2nd, my vote is to try all the glasses and find your favorite. I like the glencairn because I understand how it works, and it gives me a consistent baseline to compare whisky

Currently I have a bottle of small batch, and when that is gone I plan to replace it with the single barrel. On a separate note. Just bought a bottle and made a mental note before watching. Neat, it's very complex with a bit of an initial bite, but finishes smooth. I then put a half an ice cube in and it immediately seemed to open it up. That being said, within about 3-4 minutes, it started to lose all of the different flavors. I think next time I'll just put a little water in and skip the ice.

Daniel, don't be too jealous of Rex's hair. He has the exact same haircut as someone who showed up uninvited to a tailgate party and then tried to get in a fight when they asked him to leave. The dude even had the sunglasses in his hair.

Four roses single barrel has been a beloved go to for years. When my friend pulls it out it means there's going to be a good evening. A pretty smooth bourbon for being barrel proof. Can you use scholarships or grants towards tuition at the Whiskey Marketing School?

We only have two scholarships and they're both proffered and voted on by existing sommeliers. Unfortunately, we're not an accredited school, so government money doesn't usually extend to us.

Is there much variation in Four Roses Single Barrel bottlings? I have a bottle from warehouse MW barrel 48-2A. On a side-note do you guys get musty note from bourbon when coming directly from scotch (especially heavily peated Scotch)?

Holcombi, I've read that there is a lot of variation and I think you would expect that with the way they're producing it. I have an unopened bottle of warehouse #T5 (or TS) and barrel 40-2P. Maybe you can post the notes you find in yours and I'll do the same and we'll see where we are?

I've not noted a massive difference but I only have a few. And yes, absolutely I get the musty note.

So I've mentally hated on Four Roses because so much people like it and I never actually tried it myself. However, I tried a glass of Four Roses at a bar and now I'm actually considering purchasing a bottle.

Thanks for trying the Four Roses Single Barrel! I'm excited to go try it now! Maybe try some alkaline mineralized water instead to see if there's a difference.

Guys, what do you think of using alkaline water, such as Costco Alkaline Water, to get that limestone mineral water taste sensation?

My favorite Bourbon. A splash of water brings vanilla, cherry, stewed apples and butterscotch.

Sorry, I"m just catching up. But I do have a question... if whiskey (or whisky) is aged for 10, 12, 15, 21, etc. years, and they say to use same water they use for brewing ("branch" water), how can you be sure the water quality is the same now as it was then? Also, since you are distilling the liquid, wouldn't you think that you are removing and heating the water to the point where there wouldn't be any "terroir" effect in using "branch" water?

So, in regards to Four Roses, how different are the single barrel and the small batch? Which do you prefer?

Cool! good to know! the bevmo near me stocks both and I couldn't decide which to get. I'll keep that in mind!

Both of these make my top 5 bourbon list. I would give a very slight edge to the Small Batch.
