Today we do a review and tasting of Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey.

** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvau...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Can you guys make a channel where Daniel is allowed to ramble about the nerdy side of whiskey and isn't given shit for it? I find everything he says really interesting.
@PhillypPvP
@PhillypPvP 6 лет назад
6string42 I feel you, but I feel that's part of their chemistry. I find that part of the show enjoyable and hilarious. Different folks and such I suppose. I don't see Daniel being a snob at all honestly. He's just super excited and passionate about whisk(e)y and it shows.

Mittencamper I think Rex gets sophomoric too much and interrupts Daniel to be the center of attention. Attention seeking behaviors...
@mavicboss5897
@mavicboss5897 5 лет назад
I feel like because Rex doesn’t have any knowledge of whiskey and has nothing really interesting to add to the conversation he has to act like an ASS to get some attention.
@michaelkartman3543

@@paulmullins4676 I mean, that’s literally the show and dynamic we all subscribed for. This channel didn’t become popular by giving obsessive, in depth, nerdy whiskey information. Rex’s roll makes the show way more accessible to new comers. If I want to nerd out, I go to the appropriate channel.

I know it is truly subjective, but I am going to have to say it’s just OK. The cream is in the nose, but it doesn’t play on the palate. Maybe my palate leans toward a traditional bourbon. I would like to try their bourbon.

this past weekend, I had a double-edged Mooch and BE Mooched experience. I went to a party at a friend's house, and while I know there'd be some basic beer and liquor available to the masses, I decided to bring a bottle of Weller Select and Compass Box Oak Cross. I figured I'd drink them, offer a little to friends, and take the remainder home. Little did I know that my two whiskeys would be so popular that they'd get totally drained long before the party wound down. Live and Learn. BUT! The hostess of the party, who has an impressive Whiskey Stash of her own, not only shared some of her Green Spot AND Yellow Spot once everyone else had left, but she pulled up a chair to reach the REAL hidden secret stash where her partner keeps his Longmorn-Glenlivet 30yr. It's definitely the oldest Whiskey I've ever tried, and I doubt I'll ever see it again, but Hell Yeah, Mooched 30yr Scotch! imgur.com/hhvJsDv

Hell yes! Well played, sir. That whisky label is old school, my friend. Dates back to the era where a lot of the Speyside distilleries would add "- Glenlivet" to their name to take advantage of the market knowledge of "Glenlivet". That's probably a $400-$500 bottle dating back to the 50's 60's

Kind of awkward to make my first comment on this recently discovered, very entertaining, very informative channel be about your grandmother's appearance, but I'm guessing she was a world class babe in her youth. Went looking for this bottle after work at a fantastic liquor store and they had every Michter's but this one; will expand my search tomorrow. Keep up the good work. ETA: Found a bottle at the grocery store in Berkeley, CA for $45. Will sample soon!

I tried Michters for the first time today and the first thing I did was grab the bottle to read the label because I thought it was a low proof, it's just that easy to drink. It's an outstanding whiskey and my new favorite.

Tried this for the first time a couple months ago and it immediately became my all-time favourite whiskey. Absolutely amazing. It's the sweet pipe tobacco the really got my attention. I also tried the Michter's Rye last week and it is equally amazing. Most of the other ryes I've tried have been really flat and "generic." The Michter's Rye to me has much more genuine rye flavor with nice sharp black pepper that kinda feels like alcohol burn, but it's not, and lots of warm spices.

As far as scotch is concerned, my first big introduction was the Auchentoshan three wood. But if I had to recommend a beginner's scotch whisky, I think Oban 14 or Glenmorangie Lasanta are great starters. If they're looking for a bourbon, Angel's envy is my go to recommendation. Those are typically what I'll recommend to people who are just starting their whisk(e)y journey and they haven't failed yet. Cheers.

And the creamy vanilla butterscotch nose notes are phenomenal it literally makes me smile and feel like a child for a moment because of all the memories of drinking cream soda and eating my grandmother's butterscotch candies. I will have to say. Try this whiskey. 1 of each from: Glenmorangie or HP12 (Viking Honor) - friendly Scotch. Four Roses Small Batch or Single Barrel - high rye bourbon. Henry McKenna BIB or Elijah Craig Small Batch or Eagle Rare 10 - cheap daily bourbon. Larceny or Markers - wheated bourbon Jameson or Bushmill - cheap Irish Woodford Rye or Rittenhouse - ryes. All are sub $35 bottles and easy to find - with the exception of Eagle Rare but McKenna and Elijah Craig are everywhere.

Hey Guys, I find it scary(?) how fast I burn through your videos on this channel! It's a blend of informative and entertaining! How about a video on Royal Brackala 16? I'm not entirely convinced on how much it costs, probably the most I've spent on a bottle (only 750ml!). However it is fairly complex (imho) fruit notes and a little herbal with an interesting oilyness. Not dissimilar from say a Glennfidicch 18.

Got to try Michter's this past weekend. Had a buddy who loves their Sour Mash. I tried it but found it a little flat. Then I tried the American and I definitely fell a little in love :-) Michter's was the second American Whiskey I tried that night. The first one was from a smaller distillery: Cooperstown Classic American. I didn't sit with that one as long (got distracted by the offerings from Spirit of Hven) but I did enjoy it. I would say it's very similar to the Michter's, but I got shortbread and lemon cake with hints of butterscotch. If you're looking for another American Whiskey to try, see if you can get yourself a sample or two or ten.

I’m now convinced whisk(e)y companies across owe y’all royalties, if y’all could legally get them, because y’all are an influential force on the sweet brown nectar market! I’m fortunate to be able to take part on this journey with y’all Daniel, Rex, and the Magnificent Bastards, to explore the world of whiskey.

Man, I haven't tried Michter's in 15 years. Watching this video piqued my curiosity again and I had to run out and get this. All I can say is wow. One of the flavors I don't care much for in bourbon is its strong cinnamon flavor and being that this whiskey is aged in used oak barrels definitely pushes all the harsh wood components (sharp tannin and spice notes) to the background. However, all the rich toffee and vanilla components are still there. I can see why single malts use used barrels. All of the smooth and mellow characteristics of single malt captured in an American grain whiskey!

I started my journey w/ Russel's Reserve. A bourbon smooth enough for the novice, but w/ enough spice & umph (that's a medical term... look it up if you don't believe me) to make it a reliable daily sipper to someone w/ a little more time in the saddle

Ya know, I've never actually tried anything from Michter's even though many ppl have told me that it's great whiskey. It has everything to do with the name and label too. Everytime I see it on the shelf I pass it up bc I think it looks like something I'd see in the beer section. The label and the name, Michter's, just screams beer to me so I just can't take it seriously. It's dumb, I know but I can't help it. Whenever I see it I assume it's one of those hop infused whiskies from a brewery, which I don't like. I'll have to try this one though given your glowing review. P. S. Thanks for all the love this week. Whiskey Saint may have to send more whiskey at some point! And I didn't get a donation ceremony bc it was before you started doing them. I'm one of the originals! ;)

Hey guys, loving the videos! Big fan from Belgium. Have you had any experience with Royal Lochnagar? A while back, when I was just getting into whisky, I got gifted a bottle of the 12y/o by my grandparents. They got it as a gift some 10 to 20 years ago and it had been gathering dust in their basement. Since they had heard I was interested in whisky, they decided to give me the bottle. At the time, about half a year ago, I didn't really think it was anything special as I had not tried many other whiskies, but I quite enjoyed it. I would love to hear your opinions on this brand, so maybe something to review some day? Slàinte!

Ok... Ok... I guess I will answer my own question. I bought a bottle of Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey, and I have to say that this whiskey is the smoothest whiskey I've ever had. I'm thinking this fifth will not last as long as I had hoped. Grin. I've had the following whiskeys and my preference ratings precede each whiskey. (1) Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey (2) Wild Turkey 101 (3) Elijah Craig 12 yr (4) Knob Creek small batch (5) Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (6) Buffalo Trace bourbon (7) Bulleit Straight Bourbon All are great whiskeys, but my new favorite is Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey. Of course, as always, my preference may change over time, after all, I'm a noobe to whiskeys.

I just opened my 4th and then 5th bottle of this whiskey and noticed a significant difference in the nose. (Same batch #) pretty funky. Not nearly as amazing as the first 3 bottles. Tried this for the first time the other day and LOOOOOOVE. I've tried and loved the other Michter's whiskeys, but this is a notch above. Can anyone tell me, are they still sourcing from MGP? Their website suggests they are distilling their own products, or are in the process of beginning to. Anyone know? Just curious.

I remember watching this video back when it came out, when I lived in Austin, and going out to buy a bottle to try. I still have a quarter bottle left and when I feel like smelling melted vanilla ice cream, I just pop this bad boy open and take a wiff 🍦

Nice work dudes. Would you rate this whiskey even over Stanahan's??? Also, where does one find 350ml bottles of scotch in somewhere like California? As a middling educator, one simply can't afford to purchase and experience nicer whisk(e)y very often when they are $100 or more...
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 7 лет назад
Yeah, I'd say it's a draw. With 350's - not all distilleries even release 350's. It's almost always the craft distilleries in my experience.

Rex, as Moochdolf the White, what makes this whiskey top Stranahans? That's hard for me to imagine, Stranahans is just such a great example of an American attempt at a scotch style single malt?

I went to Black Rock whisky bar in London and tried Michter's US*1 toasted barrel, barrel strength straight rye. I had a mouthgasm. It's seemingly out of stock everywhere in the UK; a limited run. Any suggestions for a similar bottle that's available or where to get a bottle of it?

I have someone live in my appartement building that 'claimed' to be a whisk(e)y drinker. But when he told me and my friends about it, he said stuff that was straight up bullsh*t. He turned out to be a giant faker (not only for the whisk(e)y). What do you think about fakers in whisk(e)y?

Well you guys let the cat out of the bag. This is truly an AMAZING dram and hidden gem of American whiskey (non-bourbon category). I know the word AMAZING gets thrown around to much, but any other synonyms will also aptly describe it. Ones that come to mind: "Glorious", "Phenomenal", "Scrumptrulescent". This is my absolute favorite non-bourbon American whiskey after discovering it early this year. It's now my go-to drink for evenings after work. The thing that caught my eye initially is its similarity to my own name, "Mitch" but even more intriguing is the Revolutionary War/Colonial-era marketing of the bottle. It makes you feel like this is what George Washington drank and gave to his soldiers during the cold winters of the war. (I'm aware George Washington actually distilled mostly Rye www.mountvernon.org/the-estate-gardens/distillery/ten-facts-about-the-distillery/ , but the comparison has value here I think) I have been hoarding bottles in preparation for the coming bull market this specific whiskey will surely experience. Whiskey snobs already knew of Michters quality, but mark my words, the current price point $35-37 will go through the roof in the next 8-12 months now that its level of excellence becomes more well known among the general masses thanks in part to videos like yours. I know you guys are aware of the effect your videos have on driving up sales of lesser known products. Not saying anything negative here, as I love your content and the entertainment value of your vids, just pointing out what Im predicting will happen.
