1:09:50 - The third amp was given to Andy Johns (who produced the VH albums of that era). The amp was moved to a purple headshell, and given to Andy. It later was sold to Brent Woods of the band Wildside, which Andy produced in 1991, at 5150 studio. Someone out there owns a purple Soldano SLO head, with serial number “5150”.
I fairly recently discovered tone talk and am now having a field day of going through the back catalogue. The list of legendary guests you've had on is truly impressive!
That's what the stealth was turned into to a T same values everything...literally laying bare board everything stripped from it lol...need go back to that kinda build quality and beltons but just more monster like the voodoo and shit. gotta admit that wasn't usual amp quality shitttt lol
You absolutely need some kinda LED clipping circuit/box in front of that thing telling ya, if you want just more harmonics than you know what to do with telling ya good way to go about it.
Hi, thank you again for another great show. Been watching these for about 6 months, not live though because live airing times are difficult in Finland. Great to get insights from all these masters of their craft.
At 2:17:30 The fact Dave doesn't bite his tounge and speaks his mind straight up like a man! Always earned SOO much respect for him from me. And to say l that in front of Mike when he was clearly heartbroken about it but he seems to have moved on and not held a grudge against Randall at Mesa, That conversation at the time stamp and on, seems to offer a little closure to Mike, Love you for that Dave, respect to you Mike cot not holding a grudge and being able to move on from it. Lots of other people might not have. Big respect for everyone on this show.
The 5150 has an additional gain stage, though heavily padded, and the tone stack is driven by an inverting feedback amplifier instead of a cathode follower. It to is padded and has a high pass filter.
Michael Houser from Widespread Panic. RIP. Very awesome simple lead sound from SLO100. He had an amazing clean tone as well..check out late 90's early 2000's live shows for his best sounds
Thanks Marc and Dave for putting out these videos they are really cool. My only regret is not being able to watch them live, I just can't sit still through a 3-4 hour video. I break em up over the next week after they come out.
Hi Mark & Dave. Really enjoyed the show. It’s really great to dig into the details of gear and let people stretch out and discuss thing properly. So rare in this day and age. By the way Phillip McKnight uses a company to manage t-shirts for him. He doesn’t need to hold stock and do it himself as they do all the work. Maybe you’ve seen that model but it might be a good way to go if you haven’t. 🤘🏻👍🎸🤘🏻👍🎸🤘🏻👍🎸
In 1991 I played the very first 2 Mesa Dual rectifier amps that arrived in Norway, one with EL34s and one with 6L6GC tubes, and it was mentioned that the preamp section was based on the SLO, and the power section like a hyped up 100 watt version of the Marshall JTM45. The dual caliber amps were virtually the SP77 preamp combined with the mark series power sections ... with some alterations
My Pink Taco 20 V1 with three position gain mini toggle switch is tough to beat . It has the one sound I have always been looking for. No clean channel though. If you want clean you have to have a second amp. But small piece to pay for an amp so affordable . Perfect lush classic Marshall , but better, sound.
I owned both #006 and #008. The Lynch amp #006 had been modified for less gain at some point and I put it back original. Mike forgets that the PCB routing was changed at some early point. I have photos of #008 and then a 1988 amp that clearly show the differences in the boards.
A Nice Scope needed should be acquired...kinda want one like the school had..big chest one on rollers with like 100 buttons on it etc...but now you can get like one of the cooler tek's or something..really small portable one etc. ...that one though was a nightmare scope.
I don't know Man or get a hold of Scot and where they were trying some weird stuff and Wizardy with the Cathode Follower. That is it man telling ya. Shit in china now though....China stuff still isn't that great man... Better off STILL with anything old U.S Built and that component Quality.
Great episode, loved hearing all the stories. Mike is a great guy. Is it wrong my eyes kept drifting towards Mona? Maybe I watched the movie Mannequin to much. Lol
Another amazing hang out. I was wondering if Dave ever thought about doing an amp exchange with some of these guys. Dave building an amp for Mike and visa versa, would be super cool imho. Love the comments on the Recto and Modelers ;-)
Hi Dave , Marc and Mike , did you ever checked out > Fender Showman Red Knob 1987-1990 area - Front: Vol, Treb/Boost, Mid/Boost, Bass - Ch 1 In, Ch 1 In - Ch 2 In, Ch 2 In - Gain, Treb/Boost, Mid/Boost, Bass/Boost, Presense /Notch, Vol/Channel, Damp Sw 3 ways (gives VHT / Marshall/Fender) - Hi-Lo Power Sw, Standby Sw, Power Sw, Pilot Lamp Rear: Fuse, Effect Out, Effect In, Power Amp Thru, Loop Level Sw, Output Bias Adj, Output Balance Adj, Foot Sw, XLR Line Out, Ex Speaker Series, Ex Speaker Parallel, Impedance Sw It sounds killer , for me better then any Marshall with tube screamer boost set up, more harmonics, more gain, just wilder even with the amp gain on 7,,(together with all the rock/blues/and clean you'll ever need ) ,, i used a TubeScreamer before to boost to focus an compress the sound a bit ,for over the top VanHalen sounds,, but with the showman i use now , Ibanez tube TK999OD , the overdrive white one tube and its dead quiet, or Vox cool tron (both the -Brit boost the -Over the top boost and the -Snake Sharmer compressor ) so that are all real tube pedals , without noise (the Cooltrons i had to clean up the soldering works inside plus put copper tape on inside on the plastic side penals , that made a real difference ) (the soldering cleanup was really needed , the SnakeSharmer ,was like the pots ware leaking short of effect ,and after the fix its the best compressor ever , only misses a tone knob ) But to me this is a a one stop Amp ,has it all, greeting love the show !*_*! I heared that Paul Rivera did that showman and later based the Rivera Bonehead (Steve Lukather signature) on it >> schematics >>> ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-showman-red-knob/
Stellar interview. Do you happenet to know how to contact Mike on behalf of service/modding of an SLO I bought from them years ago? Don’t want to deal with boutique amp distribution.
Great show!!I own an early ninties Soldano SL 60 Super Lead that Mike was talking about on the show.It is a great amp.I had it modded so that I can switch between the channels from a footswitch and also added a solo volume boost.I run it on 6L6 power tubes.I have tried it with KT66 at one time, but it was too bassy and too muddy sounding for me.I have never tried it with the 5881s though and was wondering would there be much of a difference between the 6L6s and 5881s?
@@CC-vf1yl Hey! I just got a local tech/electronics guy to build me the channel switching. He did the same for my JCM 800 too. I wouldn`t know how difficult it was.
Regarding the story of the Dual Rectifier vs. the SLO 100; who thinks that Mesa Boogie’s Doug West should face Mike Soldano or the foster brothers, as described, in a guitar solo fight like in guitar hero with their respective amps with supposedly the same circuit? It will be interesting if you ask me.
@@kingfisher7960 collective knowledge is a different thing, mesa fanboy, the rectifier thing would be called intellectual stealing. Don't take my word for it, take Dave Friedman's.
That was like direct fresh air: "Those bastards just basically stole it" It's the same what happens with pedal companies like jhs(angry Charlie and Andy timmons pedal it's a knockoff of a mi crunchbox, wich is a knockoff of a Marshall guvnor)
Every single show gets better and better. Mike is super outgoing. I can’t believe he doesn’t have more of a RU-vid presence! Same thing for Mr. Suhr! Marc/Dave: you guys are going down in the history books. You are literally chronicling the masters of our industry over the last 30 or 40 years. This stuff just doesn’t exist anywhere else. What a treasure. Cheers.

@@councilofgiants1031 Hi cory, Mesa boogie plagiarized Soldano, but the link I posted contains a text that is at least ironic/controversial. Read the text, I think you'll understand LOL.

@@RodneyWallaceDynamoC Are you shitting me? Mesa is claiming the Recto was plagiarized from them? What a bunch of thieving assholes.
Mike don’t feel Sorry for not being able to sell the Seattle bands any amps in Seattle, Dave has to pay Jerry Cantrell to play one of his😜😜😜 J/K love you guys👍🏻
Top stuff guys. Mike would be happy to know that the Fractal models are produced the same way as the IK version (pulling an amp apart and measuring components). The HBE/Be and SLO/X88 are some of my personal favourite Fractal models (and I own a real Soldano to compare them to).
Why would he be happy with someone stealing his tones and profiting from it with no kickback to the man who was able to scratch and claw his way to making a name for himself only to have someone negate all his effort by ripping his amp into a modeler making it unnecessary for anyone to think about buying the real thing anymore. Its a shitty as the story told in this video about mesa boogie ripping off his preamp design for the rectifier series of amps.
But then you could say it was all ripped off with Marshall and Fender...it's 100% the Cathode Follower that makes it sound the way it does...It's still different though more what they wanted to do trying all the weirder stuff with switchers, amplifying transistors etc, so no it's not exactly the same.
Nooooo it's NOT the Same noneeeee of the 6l6s now are gooddd it's shit....Still can't make something close to the STR387s 0 and double 00 getter tall bottles. Find them man.
Tone-Talk is the best place to be while on confinement !.....Second time watching this episode and still find it awesome !......Thanks Guys !.................Lou.... Quebec
Rectifier being a copy makes it kinda even worse when Boogie has been trying to trademark all kinds of ancient universal circuits and almost any feature they have included, to protect their products. Had no idea and I'm not usually the type to get easily on moral judgment and resentment, just consider that shit happens all the time, but this kinda made me sad. I thought at least Boogie has been doing their mostly own stuff, but damn when you think about how crazy the Rectifier sales have been (just today releasing new Rectifier model). The redeeming quality is the sound difference at least. These long episodes are great when you and the guests just get in the flow touching all kinds of topics and driving down the memory lane. So exciting for us who never lived in the US or weren't old enough in the 70's or 80's to know about the scene, let alone have personal experiences like these guys who lived on the wave. What a silly coincidence, only some weeks ago I heard for the first time ever from a chef friend that some people perceive cilantro as soapy taste and absolutely dislike it, and same as Soldano, I think it's great. Also surprised that Eminence can be offered at same prices than Celestions in EU, despite being American made speaker, as opposed to UK/China.
It's a shame mesa ripped off Mike's pre amp circuit. They do not sound like the same amp though, explained by MIKE WITH the slo having the superior power section. As far as Dave goes,he's the last one to be pointing fingers at ripping off amp companies. His amps are just jmp's with basically the Jose mod. They even look alike.Want the Friedman amp for half the price? Buy Marshall 1987 reissue used and get a good tech to do The jose or rt or fortin mod etc etc
yes indeed, Réal amps have real sound, real feel, real heat (valves), real smell, real weight.Profilers and modelers are clones of amps, they are NOT an amp you can feel, smell or hold. Long live réal amplifiers! Real bands use real amps. AC DC for example don't use modelers, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the list is huge!, Real musicians use réal amplifiers. Modelers are for the studio musician. Réal amps have teeth that bite, they have the thud that punches you in the chest from a quad box, the rumble you feel in your balls and the treble you feel in your spine. Modelers only model this sound they only copy it, they don't actually produce it like a réal amp does. Once you've played a réal amp for over 20 years, you'll only 'play' with modelers but you'll make real music with a réal amplifer
I agree with Dave and Mike here...I guess that people in their late 40's-50's know what Dave and Mike are talking about...Real amps, "real" tones from real amps are what's it's all about...Modelers don't even come close...just like today's hipster-rockers...:)
matdan2 If there's any track record that's consistent, it's the track record of the younger generation disrespecting the older generation that greased the rails for the younger generation. Why should you listen to the opinions of the actual people who created and developed the original hardware that's being copied by software engineers in 2018? No point in doing that, right? If the younger generation was so great, why are they just creating modeling that copies the original tube amps instead of actually inventing something completely new? And if you can't tell the difference between a good tube amp and modeling software, your ears are terrible. (With all due respect)
Good one Joe man !!! Thanks...and yes...maybe the "older generation" that has created all the great amps / sounds knows a bit more about tone...and might deserve some respect. Peace :)
@@matdan2 "I don't think things have ever been as good as they are now..." -- You are doing exactly what the guests are doing but in favor of modern times. Just because you are 40 doesn't mean you have the real world experience of past and present to form a hypothesis.
I'm not at that older age but I've worked and been to many small shops and tried many types of boutique amps. Digital has improved (and will continue) but you are kidding yourself to say there's no difference or it's convincing enough. Someone would have very limited hearing and brain processing to say that. Digital is only emulating a mic'd amp in another building (hence you are not there and don't feel/hear resonance) which is then heard through PA speakers. Nothing close to a cranked amp in the room with you.
Love these stories, I remember reading guitar magazines in the late 80's and all through the 90's and spying on all the backline salivating. You guys are bringing back great memories..Cheers
Mmmm...I guess Randall Smith won't be on the show anytime soon...Love these chats 3 or 4 hours ? Make 'em as long as you want I'll still watch - keep up the good work guys.
I just gotta say that Mesa copying the SLO for the rectumfryer just pisses me off. Im glad I never bought any of their shit and never will. I will however be buying an SLO, maybe even two of them. I have always thought Mesas sound constipated but from what I can tell the SLO does not
Just catching up and watched this one. Wow-- what a nice guy! Totally not selling anything-- makes me want to buy one of his amps. With all these legends, it might be nice to always cover certain basics-- where they grew up, their initial inspiration, how they got started, how they met Dave, etc. Mike mentioned how he worked in a body shop and learned to weld and bend metal. That's a crucial detail to how he got where he is. And don't be afraid to talk about old cars, etc.-- it's always interesting to hear about people's other interests and hobbies. It gives insights into what makes them tick. I just look at this as capturing important history for future generations. Don't want to miss any details!! Thanks and great job as always- Andy
I feel like this needs to be mentioned. A Dual Rectifier is literally over $2000.00 cheaper than an SLO. Of course more people were going to buy Rectifiers. It was a far more practical price point for working musicians. Two similar sounding amps that both sound amazing, and one was $2000.00+ cheaper. Pretty easy decision. I'm not trying to knock these guys, but that's such a giant factor into why more people bought Dual Rectifiers, and they make it out to sound like the only reason it sold well is because it had the same preamp circuit, and completely ignore the factor of the SLO's very high price point discouraged potential buyers.
What an awesome hangout! Too bad I missed it live… I would have asked Mike how it came about to work with the late great Gary Moore in the early 90’s. As far as I know Gary only used the crunch channel of the SLO, but in my humble opinion, this was his best guitar tone ever. Yet again, we’re talking about Gary Moore here, he could make a crappy little gorilla amp sound amazing.
Funny hearing them talk about the feedback you get from a real tube amp. I experienced this firsthand recently. Been playing cheap amps and modelers for 25 years. Finally got my first real 2x12 all tube amp recently. It touched me in places I've never been touched before. They're just different though. I have the Amplitube Soldano & it's the most amazing tone I've ever gotten. But for feel, tubes rule. It's the difference between listening to a CD vs hearing the band play live. They're both great, but just two different experiences.
The Crazy thing is that " Tone" you're chasin' in your mind ... changes with time. A lot of little things go into putting the lightning in the bottle. Thank God for these guys and guys like them. Tone (IMHO) is not something you can keep. It is something you experience. Hopefully over and over... These Builders...get you really close to that, "again and again" feel. Gentlemen... Thank you
The U.S. stopped printing the $1,000 bill and larger denominations by 1946, but these bills continued circulating until the Federal Reserve decided to recall them in 1969
I thought eddie's Striped SLO was the pink one originally and he had it striped? That is why you only see him with the two SLO heads in the pics and not three.
Around the 2:30 mark Dave and Mike are talking about modeling vs real tube amps. I feel like what he is trying to say is a real tube amp you have to wrestle or fight, has life and breath, it has character and a unique voice, when you play or hear a tube amps in the flesh, it's electric!! For the record I've owned all the modeling gear since the original pod and just sold my axe fx III, helix, Kemper, and currently own a BE100 deluxe, Mark V 90 watt, Badlander 100, EVH 5150 III 100 Watt with the UA OX Box and I've never been happier. We live in an amazing time!! I have so much respect for these pioneers in the music business. I really did not know about Mike Soldano and his amps, I must have one...
These should be on the History channel because they document so much tonal history! Disappointed that y'all didn't hit the 5 hour standard! Lol Thank you for the time and insights!
SRV used Fender Bogner & Marshalls live together w/his hands made that tone I could see him liking a SLO. Once tracking a blues rock guitarist in studio well his amp blew up during the scratch trx & we finished w/my 5150 on the clean chn w/crunch got some of the best blues rock tone I've ever heard he was surprised he thought that was a Metal only amp. SLO's 5150's can have lots of tones if you retube w/the right tubes & know how to dial em in. Btw that guy was a SRV Clapton Hendrix fan.
Missed the live show, but, having some coffee and watching, now. I don't know if Dave and Mike read these comments, but, I don't think they really understand how cool it is to just sit back and listen to their stories. Thanks Marc !!!
I watched it live for the most part but fell asleep.... Long week, but finished watching it this morning.. the content is great... I love the 4 hour shows and how interesting all these stories can be. Thank you Marc and Dave
Awesome show! Kept me entertained during my 8 hour road trip home this past Monday. This show is better than a "tell all book"! Not only do you get great insight into products and industry, but you get all these behind the scene stories that are just awesome!!! Thanks again Marc and Dave!!!!
Can anyone speak on what Dave was talking about when he talked about a certain brand of tubes "shitting the bed"? I use JJ EL34's in my Randall RM100 - retubed it myself 5 years ago (I know fuck all), and it operates great.
OU182 was in 1988 and was before Carnal Knowledge which came out 1991. Balance was in 1995. Carnal Knowledge had CAE 3+ Preamp and Soldano and Balance was Peavey.
What a genuine modest guy and total badass genius. Soldano SLO100 to this day is pretty much the only 6l6 amp that I will touch because somehow it has the midrange of Marshall and balls for days unlike the usual American hifi-like variants.
