Great discussion. I agree with pretty much everything, other than specifically in the middleware case, there seems to be no reason (on the face of it) to not support export runtime = 'node' & have that not work only when using Vercel if they require it, thats fine but keeping that infra choice in Next when Next !== Vercel seems odd to me.
Why would middleware need DB access to check auth? Wouldn't you just need to access the cookie of the request and see if the JWT is valid? Doesn't this solve the nextjs self hosting issue?
