Follow our worldbuilding progress as we explore the creation of a new race set in our world. I share my approach when developing and concepting a race that makes sense and sits comfortably in your own world. I try provide a number of ideas to flesh out your fantasy role playing game, be it dungeons and dragons, pathfinder, GURPS or any other amazing system out there!
I also share my concept art and my ideas on map creation and using 3d models to provide a base for environment design.
We are developing a mini campaign set inside a dark and corrupted swamp. Follow our development as we flesh out a diverse and eclectic biosystem made up of a wide range of races, factions, biomes and creatures all with their own storylines that weave a greater tale as the adventurers push ever deeper.
The adventure will be compatible with most fantasy role playing games and table top adventures!

Love this concept. I create races with a similar process, but usually starting with a couple interesting points (exemple: Race of metallurgists living in a vulcano), than I work backwards to derive what they eat, etc.

Nice! establishing where they are and then figuring out how they got there is a great way of approaching it:)

Wow! I love the world y'all are building, Matt. It is fascinating to see the thought and detail you put into creating cultures. Your design process is beautiful to watch. I can't wait for more.

This is cool I wanted to do a race like this that’s based on Pūkeko, swamp folk, but without the swamp hick association I’m just crap at drawing lol and made a tuatara race instead Let my bird race be a more raven like bird so I could do village nests in the canopies A swamp bird pukeko race would still nest in the weeds I reckon. Their agricultural development around quickening the growth and strength of the reeds they nest in so it can be a sort of non-destructive construction

Pukeko race is such a cool idea, give them those big ol' feet. I kinda like the idea of Swamp hicks but sneaky powerful like the Mott Irregulars from the Malazan Book of the Fallen (Bit of an obscure ref but not sure how to describe it - kind of people underestimate these naturally powerful mages because of their redneck nature.) Tuatara folk would be cool too!

This is my favourite video so far, even though I love them all! It's just the amount of information that is packed into it, and many thing I never thought of even though I watch you work on it behind the scene.

The solution to the wings-on-anthros problem in terms of design: Their idle position is draped around the being like a cloak.

Ah nice, that could look quite cool and mysterious on their monks as well

@@worldbuildermatt "Has wings but can't fly" sounds like a great source of religious ideas for a race, believing in some kind of original sin concept that stripped them of the ability to fly in punishment.

I've never made a race myself; I've never been an artist and I always feel like visuals are something that make the idea real, so the lack of this ability has always put a damper on trying to come up with races or material that was too in depth. After seeing videos like this thought, it's incredibly hard not to have the creative juices flowing! Thanks for giving us a glimpse into our world Matt, I'll most definitely have to borrow ideas like this for future campaigns.

being able to visually demonstrate something is such a bonus skill to have (It keeps me in work as a concept artist!) but I think the written word can be evocative as well - especially when it adds so many layers to a race that illustrations can't cover - but I get it, wanting to be able to draw stuff like this got me into art in the first place - and its never too late to start! Thanks for taking the time to write a great comment - really appreciate it:)

Oh my goddess, these productions of yours keep on getting better and better - and they *are* productions. The creator in me marvels at how much time and effort you must've put into this presentation while the stroy afficianado in me, who enjoys taking in the visuals, just sits back and soaks all this goodiness up. Thanks a million, Matt and wishing you and your loved ones a magical 2024 ahead!

Cheers mate! I did get a bit carried away with this one - its a strange balance on the amount of work I should put into these versus the amount of work I should be putting into making the adventure! But they kinda go hand in hand. Really glad you are enjoying it and wishing you and yours an amazing 2024!!

This is cool! Ive been reworking liazrdfolk for my rpg and at first it was a simple "stronger than thou" kind of deal but recently i started to rewrite them so they are more just simple hunter gatherer monks who spend their days meditating, hunting and being on that transcendence grindset

ohhh, nice - I really like when a standard trope gets turned on its head, its a great way to keep the players on their toes and take nothing for granted - and let them know they are in a unique world!

I'm curious how they can be glass blowers with beaks that long. I've only done glassblowing once or twice and having lips really helped when it came to it. Anyways. I'm a casual layman worldbuilder who doesn't do it too often. I don't think I can give you any tips, as your knowledge and experience in that area is superior to mine.

1. OMG Thank you for no wings. I am so full of vomit when someone says they want their next character to be a flying race. Arococcra GloomStalker Ranger... you basically forced me to put the party indoors until someone else can cast fly in the party. DM's can't let people blow out encounters so easily at low levels. Particularly if it's just one character out of the group.

I hear ya and totally agree, such a game breaker at early levels - and still influences my encounter planning at higher levels.

As a question of interest: why would they have hollow bones if they don’t have wings and therefore can’t fly? Most birds have hollow bones because being light is essential to being able to fly. Of course this could be fixed by just making the bones not hollow, but it can also be an interesting little detail: having hollow bones makes them light on their feet, being able to nimbly go from being completely still to running. This trait helps them avoid predators or enemies that they would be helpless against because of their lightweight. Little details are fun to think about and really help flesh out a race! Not that your races need any more fleshing out! Love what you’re doing, keep it up.

Its a really good point, maybe they could fly at some point of their evolution - but I prefer the idea it gives them certain other advantages like you said, mainly navigating the wetlands which does have lots of islands made of debris where normal travellers would sink. Their rafts are pretty flimsy too, so their lightweight helps them there. Thankyou for the brilliant suggestions!
