Thanks for sharing. I have used this on several pipes and had great success with it. I’ve found that a little thicker coating tends to give me a better all around coating once everything dries because some of the moisture from the sour cream is absorbed into the briar and I get a more even coating in the pipe (just my observation). Again, thanks for all of your videos. I’ve learned a lot from you and appreciate you sharing this with the YTPC!!

Thank you for taking the time to present this information. I will file the information for future use. For the moment, I am using what I consider a simple method for coating flawed areas of bowls. For example, I have a pipe with a very dark area on the exterior of the bowl. It looks like the first stage of a burn through. I cleaned the interior of the bowl at the dark spot, then coated just that point of the interior with fireplace cement. Just a thin layer of the cement. Here in the U. S., fireplace cement is available in tubes at hardware stores. I then smoked the pipe to build up carbon over the cemented spot. So far, no progression on the burn through. - Just another idea.

Frank Bishop thanks for info and for watching. I am going to research the fireplace cement a bit more. My immediate concern is whether fireplace cement is safe to heat and inhale orally? I know it can be an odd thing to say about a vessel to burn a known carcinogenic plant in, but I tend to be ultra conservative about anything that goes inside a pipe, I try to keep to food safe and natural products that people already orally consume.

Worded like a charm!! So much better than coating the bowl, maple syrup in this case, and then filling with the charcoal. I was surprised to see how durable it was after curing! Thanks for these videos, answers a lot of questions for those of us just starting out!

So far, so good with the honey and charcoal method. The old pipe, I have, has had three salt and Everclear treatments but still had a strange smell? Even after carbon cake removal, sanding the bowl, and cotton ball with bourbon. No smell now. Now I'm just letting them cure. Thank you.

Interesting technique. Did not know. On a sidenote, both honey, and activated charcoal or great for your health. Honey can be substituted for any sugar products and it’s completely healthy. Activated charcoal binds with any toxins in your body and removes them. It’s also great for bloating and gas.🤔☑️👍🤷‍♂️

Some notes on my own experience: I noticed charring in the estate pipe I recently bought: a Savinelli nonpareil 9111. The charring resembled a log burning with white charring. I used your second method but substituted non-fat yoghurt and mixed in the 6 activated charcoal tablets I ground up. I applied it in the bowl and let it sit for a day. Then I noticed that it had started to dry and absorb into the charred part but still left a gouge. So I applied a second thicker coat. I let it dry over 4 days. I then filled the bowl with Newminster Blackberry Brandy. I smoked it slowly. It burned hot. But I got the sensation of smoking a new pipe. There was no distinct flavour from the yoghurt. But there was also no flavour to the tobacco. Some of the carbon bits absorbed into the fine ash. I emptied the ash and carefully cleaned the pipe. It looked like a worked in pipe. I think it will take a few more bowls to get it back to normal smoking. But thanks for the tip. At the very least there was no smell or taste and it seems to have solved the charring problem. I think applying a second coat helped. Thanks.

I first tried the honey/charcoal method. As said, too messy!...Then tried the sour cream/charcoal method....Much better!!!..I mix the two ingredients on a small salad plate or small condiments cup(Taco places)...I use a mixing stick (popsicle stick), dab some on bowl interior, but smooth with my finger...

Nice trick!!! I will definitely consider this. I would personally do 2 coats though, allowing the 1st coat to dry for 4 days and then apply the 2nd coat and then allow to dry for another 4 days but that's just me.

Real quick. How did you get that brilliant mirror shine? I just attempted for the very first time to restore and clean up an estate pipe. I used paragon wax and microfiber cloth...since I don’t have a lot of tools or buffing wheels. About 3 or 4 coats. It looks good enough I guess. It shines. But it doesn’t have that POP.
@BarePipe
@BarePipe 5 лет назад
J. Oakley unfortunately that pop only comes with a buffing wheel and hard carnuaba wax. You can get close to that with a buffing wheel on a drill. I have a video about that. Check it out

Hello! I usually use honey but I’m going to try the sour cream because it’ll be much less messy for sure. If you see this comment would you mind answering a question please. I would like to use this sour cream and activated charcoal on 7 pipes I’m cleaning. I don’t smoke a whole lot so it may be some time before I smoke each one. Will this be ok just having the pipes on the shelf after adding the layer of paste? I imagine it cures pretty solid but if it’s sitting there a month or two unsmoked I wondered if it would matter. Thanks in advance.

@mayorofrlyeh8042
@mayorofrlyeh8042 6 лет назад
As educational as always, thanks very much for sharing. I am slightly skepitcal with the sour cream somehow. I mean it is a product that goes bad really quick if not refrigerated. Might this not produce mold or anything in the pipe?
@BarePipe
@BarePipe 6 лет назад
Mayor of R'lyeh I shared your skepticism when I read about it, but it disappeared after I tried it a few times. I don’t know why it does not go rotten, but it doesn’t. It just dries into a hard tasteless and odorless coating, and I live in the Pacific NorthWest where everything else goes moldy all the time! Cleverer people than me may be able to explain the chemical process, I just have anecdotal evidence. Btw some pipe makers use plain yogurt instead and it works the same.
@mayorofrlyeh8042
@mayorofrlyeh8042 6 лет назад
