Toxic relationships and environments can cause anxiety and depression as well. While working at my last job and before my divorce, I was on 4 psych meds and slept under a CPAP. Job change and relationship change later, and I am no longer on any meds, have lost 20 pounds, and no longer require the CPAP. Found out my "central" sleep apnea was anxiety induced. You really do need to examine all aspects of anxiety and depression and determine the root cause in order to manage/eliminate it. Meds aren't the be all end all.

As a therapist I use his 9 reasons and list of basic psychological needs every single week. It just took me 2 years to find where I originally heard it. Thank you.

13:40 "We live in a machine that is designed to get us to neglect what is important about life." Wow, that is some real, deep food for thought.

As a long-term depression and anxiety sufferer, I can attest that permaculture and organic gardening bring long-term healing. I used permaculture to cure my depression in my late 20’s; in my thirties I was self medicating because I was in a bad marriage. In my 40’s, as a grandmother, I have returned to gardening on my city balcony. As the descendant of farmers, as a former farmer myself, my connection to animals and nature is paramount to becoming healthy again.

Now that I have been following you beautiful ppl, i recalled that I've always been decluttering without being aware, and again filling it up. Hence, minimalism is a constant procedure. But these days I shop more consciously and can't thank you both enough. 🙏🙏🙌🙌 Hugs from Mumbai

I was born in USSR and raised on a pretty decent diet, spending summers working in my grandma's vegetable garden and eating what she grew for ourselves - no pesticides, no nothing. I didn't know what junk food was before like age 15 and later never abused it or overate in any other sense. all my family was eating the same decent food. but my father was having fits of anger (not even alcohol induced) where he would beat the shit out of anybody female in the family. when I was like 8 his mom we were living with died after what he totally lost control. it got to the point when I was rummaging the streets scared to go home before the lights were out not to be beaten or verbally abused. anxiety now is my 2nd nature and at times I get depressed because all my subsequent life is not sunshine and kittens. thoughts that people are inflicting pain on each other are depressing, this source of pain is endless. and now I hear some adult men who even authored some books believing that the most likely reason for my anxiety is an occasional bag of chips. well if you want my opinion, if your bad feelings cure with a better diet, it means you had a bad case of constipation and now you're having it confused with mental health issues. you might want to wonder though how come you were stuffing yourself with something that wouldn't even pacify a scared, abused and deprived soviet child. also the mentioned here research about where people look for happiness in russia is incorrect too, i'd hesitate to say what number one source of joy for most people is, vodka or bullying or both, but it doesn't really work.

Thank you for this episode, I really loved it! I saw a tweet on Monday of a girl asking herself just why she didn't feel satisfied with a purchase and remembered her on the topic of min 16:00. I immediately wrote her about you but I don't think she speaks nor reads english. Have you considered translating your episodes in another language? If ever need help with Spanish let me know ;)

Here's Kant's Rule: “Act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.” Mark Manson wrote it in his book.

Another junk value is the idea that one must not be fat to be attractive! The diet industry ( and wellness industry now the new diet industry) is a huge machine as well. It has us hating our bodies because they do not meet some prescribed ideal. People walk around with intense shame about their bodies not being perfectly “healthy” or “fit”. Hours of time spend on blogs and websites promising perfect health and a thinner body. There is nothing wrong with taking care of our physical health, but to label fat people as unattractive is abusive. Not everyone is genetically made to be thin or even “healthy”. So a simple life can include letting go of that junk value as well and learning to care for our bodies sanely, not try to control and mold them stemming out of out of our emptiness which is perpetually coaxed by this consumerist culture.

Just look around yourselves and you might find out why depression is such a big fashion. We haven't "evolved" yet to be completely emotionless, although some are quite good at it, basically that's the way forward in today's world: forget the feelings and go ahead, show what you are capable of(, or not)...that's today's philosophy in short. By the way Joshua, this one is for you: I listened to your story and let me tell you it's quite fascinating... So, it started like you "had the famous 6 figure income then your mother died and your marriage ended both in the same month. " Then a few vids later, you revealed when your mother passed away she had 2 dollars something on her bank account. I'm not too sure about the coffee prices in the US, but in a coffee shop less than 3 dollars might be just not ENOUGH. I wonder how this could be while you were enjoying your bathrooms. Her death was kind of expected (stage 4 cancer), it wasn't a sudden thing, but you know what? You just keep promoting/enjoying your fair coffee, it must be very tasty. Oooh.. And when you talk about values and loving people...hm. and yet, there is some truth in your story, because we don't appreciate ... ENOUGH. It's true for people, things, whatever. Cheers guys.
