Thoughts while reading before watching the rest of the video. Chapter One Fun with alliteration in the first few pages. “Ravening and raging” Cosmos Kingmaker, Peter Proctor, Fabian Foreman, Captain/Colonel Chezem “Thunder, thumping thunder outside!” Interesting thought “A mechanical man can’t stop the doom clock from striking on us. He’s part of the clock.” Chapter Two Paul is more Han Solo than Paul the apostle. I think Lafferty’s imagination exists in the dreams of Hopp-Equation space. Fevered dreams of theology, mythology and science fiction. “They have tried almost every other sort of man; now they want to try an honest man.” So difficult to find an honest man?! “Every man is a multitude” “King’s Men everywhere are programmed mechanical killers.” The great reversal during Hopp-Equation travel seems to be gender related yet gender-less in a way.

All great thoughts! More Han Solo than Paul the Apostle haha! I agree, but there still might be a few connections to the latter.

Where'd you find the image on the screen at 16:33 ? There's no records of it except for on the Seishinsha book database. I guess they released Past Master in Japan and had a manga artist draw the cover? I would love to know more, it's a cool interpretation. I've been a fan of this book for years, I read it cover to cover many times. I enjoyed Space Chantey too. I'm particularly interested in Lafferty's theological ideas and writing which are present in Past Master- I'm not sure which novels and short stories reflect his Catholic views best. It's a shame that most of his works are so hard to find or access.

Mainly I've found Japanese Lafferty covers here: lafferty.sakura.ne.jp/RAL/RALjap.html Lots of cool interpretations. Glad you like the PM one. The site does name the artists and the year of publication for each edition if that helps. I feel that these covers (and some other art I've seen for Lafferty's short stories by Japanese artists) suggests that Japanese readers take Lafferty's imagery a lot more fulsomely (I'll say that rather than 'literally' or 'seriously'). This may be a result of translation, both linguistic and cultural. But if Lafferty mentions a person having animal traits and other such imagery, Japanese artists seem likely to bring that out in visual form. I think English readers often tend not to read Lafferty quite so imagistically. Which is a shame. Lafferty's sentences are bursting with visuals. I'm very interested in Lafferty's theology as well. Aside from Past Master, Arrive at Easterwine and Fourth Mansions are probably his two most overtly theological novels. They're also two of the most dense and weird! Rich stuff. Thanks for commenting! :)
