On this episode I explore one of my favourite subgenres of collecting: those elusive Columbia House/RCA Music Service 80s 8 track releases. Join me, won't you?
They're still making 8tracks...i just got the latest Sting & McCartney on 8track..Dolly Parton put her Christmas album last yr on 8track. There's tons of independent bands here in the States that put their stuff on 8track. In fact I just bought a new 8track player with cd & USB. There's also a place here in Savannah that sell new 8track decks 4 the car. I was working in a record store in Florida & we were still getting 8tracks shipped 2 us up until '91...keep the passion 4 8tracks !!!
Thanks Bill. Found a few more since this video...not many though. The search goes on! When you have a chance, message me on FB, I have a question for you.
Hey Tim. Super Informative. Thanks for sharing. I have my fathers collection of about 8k 8-Tracks. He died back in "98 and I am just now thinking about selling the hole trailer full. I have no clue on values but I know there is a ton of great ones a ton of Notso great ones. Do you have any recomendations of putting a price on the entire trailer full?
I know nothing about pricing unfortunately, I would say don't just sell them at a yard sale. I recommend taking many pictures of them, and maybe using Facebook Marketplace? Somewhere that collectors are already watching.
New vender at my local indoor flea market has thousands of new old stock 8 track tapes. I've been going every weekend going through the boxes grabbing the good stuff for 50 cents each
I have found tapes like KTeL's Masters of Metal that where released around 1984 so it wasn't just record clubs that where still producing them. There where a lot of old 70' 80's cars that where still on the road that had 8Track players in them all the way into the 1990's. I think that's one why they where still selling them because CD's where too expensive and not in every car yet. I have 3 tapes with the Geffen label on it. The RCO where using up leftover tape shells from the 70's with different variants of color, tape in them from cheap to good quality. Some of these had speed issues. I have a Police Synchronicity that plays way too fast to even listen to. They sound like they inhaled helium. I also have a greatest hits album that plays normal from the same RCO company, My rarest 8track is Michael Jackson's Bad.
@@liammusgrove6334 Yeah I know. I saw one in a Scion once and it was custom fit to the console. I would be satisfied enough with a good factory cassette or CD player in that case. If I had an older classic car with an 8Track in it I would probably just leave it in there and use it. I have a good recorder so I can make my own tapes. There would only be a few I would take along since they are huge. I was saying about older cars that came with one factory installed in the late 60's to early 80's that where left over.
@@liammusgrove6334 It's a K-Tel tape. Do you know what those are? It's a compilation of heavy rock music. I bought the tape new at a Zare's store back in 1986 so yes it does exist.
@@liammusgrove6334 My first two cars had 8Track Players in them a 1980 Trans Am and a 1977 Ford Ranchero with a Quad 8track player. I had one of those cassette adapters that plays cassettes on a 8track player so I was using both. Used 8track Tapes where so cheap you could buy them for a quarter in the 80's. That's why.
Paul P yes If you go to www.discogs.com you’ll see the first one, Killers, and Number of the Beast were made on 8 track. Very rare and sell for big bucks when they do come up for sale.
Brand new 8-track in 2021! Originally released on lathe-cut vinyl, comedy band Power Salad (Dr Demento Show) has reissued the 2017 LP "Vaudeville" on 8-track - custom made one at a time, dubbed in real time from master audio files; they have front, spine & rear labels as well as custom slipcases. Pretty darn cool. Limited edition, like 8 left! Tell yer retro audio friends! powersalad.bandcamp.com/album/vaudeville
