Gary Sandy grounded the show because he played it so real. He was the most underrated part of the ensemble.

As usual a great discussion. A generous discussion on a sweet show. For me as a young teen during the later seasons it was all about the music. And I would scan the studio walls for my favorite band's posters. You named a lot, and I also caught glimpses of The Selecter, Elvis Costello's Trust, Kraftwerk, Ian Hunter etc. The one thread I thought you might pick up was WKRP being ranked 16th. What city now has 16 radio stations? A lost era when you could roll the dial and hear so many diverse sounds. Thanks again for a great episode. PS - the Beefheart song is in season 1 and is Suction Prints from Shiny Beast

Frank Bonner as Herb Tarlek is one of the best performances and characters that ever existed in the annals of sitcoms.

Interestingly enough, Michael Des Barres--who played one of the members of the band Scum of the Earth (his band Detective's music was used for that episode)--later was part of the initial cast of NEW WRKP as one of the more compelling yet underused DJs.

Hugh Wilson went on to direct POLICE ACADEMY, BLAST FROM THE PAST and THE FIRST WIVES CLUB.

Steven Kampmann and Peter PJ Torokvei were principle writers for this show, who together and separately went on to co-write BACK TO SCHOOL with Rodney Dangerfield and REAL GENIUS, among others.

ROOM 222 precedes Tim Reid's character, with black lead characters, and Hugh Wilson co-created FRANK'S PLACE with Reid later on.

THE NEW WRKP missed Andy as the program director, as well as decent replacement female characters for Jennifer and Bailey. It wasn't particularly well-written, though it did have a few episodes that stood out....while only Carlson, Les and Herb remained, Dr Johnny Fever, Venus and Jennifer returned for a few episodes. Also appearing on NEW WKRP was Johnny's ex Bunny, Mama Carlson and Herb's wife Lucille, played by Edie McClurg.
