The biggest buzz and excitement around the thermal industry for the last several months has been around a thermal company named RIX and their new LEAP series thermal rifle scopes. This week on the podcast Jason and Hans offer up their first RIX scope review as they give you all the details on the super popular and extremely affordable Leap L3. With a 3.2x base magnification, a fully removable 18650 battery with long battery life and a host of other cool features, this is a scope you're going to want to consider before buying a thermal scope in this price range.

*** Why Hunt Hogs? ***
Our journey into wild/feral hog hunting started like many others living in rural communities. We didn't start hog hunting for fun or sport... we did it because we had to. You see, hogs cause millions of dollars of damage and destruction each year in rural communities and our situation was no different. Hogs were destroying our land and that out of friends and family. The vast majority of hunting stories that you hear about on this channel are hogs, boars and sows, taken from family land... this problem is personal for us...
__________________________________________________
*** Why Hunt Coyotes and Predators? ***
Coyotes and Predators, similar to hogs, cause financial stress for many families in rural communities. Coyotes kill livestock, plain and simple. Ranchers have battled coyotes killing cattle since the early days of ranching and it costs them dearly. Cattle ranching is a business, the cows aren't pets, every time they lose a calf to a coyote those families lose a paycheck. Cattle ranchers hate coyotes just as much as Farmers hate hogs! We hunt coyotes to protect the livelihood of our friends and neighbors that depend on their cattle business to feed their family...

My opinion you can sale scopes without damaging your reputation. Like I tell my customers I would rather make a living off you for a long time than make a killing off you one time. People will only let you do them wrong one time. I keep coming back to this channel for the honesty

I have an L6. I would call the scope a Type 2 Hybrid. It is essentially a standard day scope looking thermal that functions like a clip on thermal in front of a day scope. However, unlike what Iray calls a "Hybrid" that can operate as a stand alone or in front of a day scope, it is all made together. As you said, you are zooming in on the display with the "optical" zoom. Thats why I'd call it a Type 2 hybrid. It's a great feature, especially when you add the capability to build a reticle for your cartridge, add a LRF and the ballistic calculator. There are a lot of features for the money. When they fit some dual lenses in the front to switch from... say 2x to 4x, AND the ocular "optical" zoom, it will be a whole different animal. As always, great review guys.

Great review. After exhaustive research for my first thermal I went with an L3. Had it 4 months & love it. Was hunting with a friend one night & some fog rolled in. He said he was having trouble swing through his AGM ( I think an Adder) & asked to look thru my L3. He said the L3 was much clearer. I had no issue at all with the fog. Looking forward to hearing more about the laser range finder Rix has for the Leaps.

Great review, gents. I recently bought the RIX Stride ST6, and it's an absolutely fantastic little optic. I also run an N-Vision Halo X50 on my rifle, and to y'alls point once again, as clear and crisp as the ST6 is, it's a completely different ballgame by comparison to my N-Vision. That BAE thermal sensor N-Vision uses is flat out superior, and as much as I like the little ST6 for 1x scanning, I make sure folks know it's not an "N-Vision killer". Which is completely realistic because even the most expensive RIX optic is -2x cheaper than the high end N-Vision lineup. You really do get what you pay for with the extra 2x - 3x price tag of N-Vision, and each optic has its right place. Love the ST6 though. Can't say enough about how great of an experience it's been to have the ST6. Kudos to all the folks at RIX for a job well done.

@@TheLateNightVisionShow Gentlemen, after further investigation, I want to apologize for my previous original comments about RIX addressing and attempting to debunk the myths going on right now. That post actually came from an individual who does not work for RIX, as a reply to someone else’s comment. So, unfortunately I cannot attribute credit for this reply to a RIX staff member and I have edited my post accordingly deleting those comments. Won’t happen again guys.

Great review guys. I think you all hit the highs and the lows of this scope. The facebook rants and arguments over the last several months have been crazy and I believe that people have either been over sold or more skeptical than they should be on this scope. Great review and discussion of the RIX L3.

Commenting on my comment to the Clarion video. I had heard the term optical elsewhere. It is optical as in it does magnify the image one sees, but your term occular is more precise. This Rix system is similar to the old screen magnifiers they sold to put in front of your TV to make the screen appear bigger, so it is not true optical zoom as far as scopes go. The diopter being affected by that occular zoom is a point to consider. The no "scope is for everybody" could not be more true. 👍👍

Great review. The RIX branded QD mount is more than adequate for the job, but I prefer Bobro mounts and the standard Dual lever mount (1.5" center height ) works great for mounting all of the tube style scopes without objective contact issues. I also added a butler creek Element (42-47mm) eyepiece flip cover because I carry it in a backpack scabbard. My one negative is that when the scope is on standby, it can be awakened with the manipulation of any dial on the scope, causing it to go into a different palette, digital zoom or the menu screen unbeknownst to the user. The AGM Adder scopes had that same issue and AGM took care of that with a firmware update. Hopefully RIX will be able to do the same with the LEAP series of scopes.
@shoots1004
@shoots1004 7 месяцев назад
As an update, RIX contacted me and said that their engineers are going to have a firmware update in the future to address the LEAP scope standby feature to only be taken out of standby mode with a press of the power button only. That's great customer service.

It appears to me that what rix has done is taking a combination of traditional Optics and the clip-on thermal and place them into one housing. By doing this you do get some Zoom that's not digital on the display screen it also helps you to minimize the shift you can have in a clip-on.

I’ve had an L6 for 3 months and love it. Zero complaints. Only issue is if you are a big video/audio guy the audio kinda sucks. On the ocular zoom issue. If you have a stigmatism at all the cross hairs will double when zooming. But it’s not awful. The zoom is sweet. It’s fast and smooth. I’ve never used the digital zoom. Killed anywhere from 12 yards to 375 yards.

Thanks for watching Jay! We think the L3 is a great scope for $2300 and is a real contender for one of the best in the under $2500 price range. We just needed everybody to know that they were getting a $2300 scope and not a $6K scope, like some people are saying on social media.. Thanks again!

Great stuff as always fellas! I’m looking at adding another thermal to my collection to be a dedicated coyote thermal with the occasional option at hogs in open fields. I’m looking for high base mag but I don’t want to give up a bunch of clarity for it to happen. Are there a couple of models you’d recommend for further review? Hunt a ton of flat open country where I’m at. I appreciate your guys honesty regardless of brand or price.👊🏼🔥

If you zero your thermal at 50 yards will it be accurate at any range up to its capability so if 50 zero and you have a fox at 100 or 120 will it hit your target Or how do you adjust for different yardages like the Agm rattler 19/256 or simular
@TheLateNightVisionShow
@TheLateNightVisionShow 7 месяцев назад
No that will not work. The scopes work exactly like a normal day time scope. If you zero at 50 and an animal comes out at 250 yards you will have to know your hooks over and raise your reticle up above your target/bullseye. Again, it’s 100% like a day scope.

Can you adjust the digital zoom on the fly simply by rolling the turret?

Yes you can do that with the right turret.
@jameskozlowski5496

So the ocular zoom which zooms in on the screen will also pixilate the image just as digital zoom does. So it's not optical zoom at all.
@TheLateNightVisionShow
@TheLateNightVisionShow 7 месяцев назад
In our opinion, it's not true optical zoom. The ocular zoom does perform a little better than the digital but the picture image does distort somewhat as you go up in magnification. Thanks for watching!
