This is a topic a lot of people need help with. I don’t think I ever had anybody sit down and give me the talk or any instruction on how you figure out the value of your work and how to go out there and go get that value. That was something I never really figured out over my career because I never got the foundation to start with. The people who probably should have given me some initial guidance never did. Give me a ground work to figure this out. So I got taken advantage of a whole lot because of that.

It was hard to film this topic because I didn't want to sound like a know it all but, like you, I wish somebody would've told me.

This is a hard topic for so many. I'm a quilter. Just in materials alone, you can have hundreds of dollars into the project. Then you add your time. People do not always understand or appreciate the craftsmanship.

Thanks for making this video. I have this problem too. My wife tells me I don't charge enough. I'm like you I'm a perfectionist and never think my work is up to par and don't charge too much.

Totally agree. Doing a Scotty at the moment myself and I’m not a professional by no means but I’m taking my time and watching your videos and others too as well as measuring 1700 times and cutting once. I felt going into this project that if I couldn’t at least double my money it wouldn’t be worth it. But I also agree with the whole not ripping anyone off and doing the right thing and enjoying it as well. Mine is a 1972 with a 12’ box and took it down to frame and I feel that after I complete it I’m going to have a range of 4-5k in it and feel if I can’t get 10-12k out of it it’s not worth anything except just to be a hobby. I like your content. Hope to see more of them. I honestly wish that I could do what you do full time but in my neck of the woods I feel like it’s gonna be tough to rebuild vintage campers as a full time job. Although it would be nice to do that and feel like you never work a day in your life because of the enjoyment. God bless.

Rob, don’t you feel this should be taught by parents to their children, if they don’t know how, then as soon as they attend school,it should start or continue there, throughout life. Everyone should know this stuff whether they become self employed or not, they still need to know their worth so they can be paid what they’re worth, etc. Rob, I’m 64, have always been a conscientious person and worker but never got paid what I was worth as that kind of person. I started a construction business and did ok as a one man operation but at 27, was still trying to give people a break. Fast forward to today, I have friends in the window and siding business charging the going rate today of $1,000 per window installed and $250 if it’s just trimming the window. The key difference is with 55 years experience he can trim one in 15 minutes, that is $1,000 per hour, which is killer money. In 1987, people were balking at $25 an hour for repair work, lol. We’re good natured people Rob and are thinking about others, but nothing wrong with getting paid what we are worth. Rob, I met a few people that knew their worth from day one in business, knew their quality was tops, set their price, did not deviate, and were extremely successful. They didn’t get every job, but they made money on every one, and more importantly, they weren’t stressed out like the ones that tried to get every job, and please everyone

It would be nice if our parents or our schools taught us this but sometimes they are not equipped to tell us. There are so many factors involved and you make many good points. It is a good discussion to have.
