As a follow up to Ep. 39 where we talked about snare beds, this week is about the extreme ends of the spectrum for snare wire count- from 16 all the way to 42 strand wires, and how the snare wire count affects the sound and behavior of your drum.
Wires used for this video were the Puresound Concert 16-strand and Gibralter 42-strand wires on a 60's Ludwig Acrolite with Evans UV1 batter and Snare Side 200.

God, I love this channel so much. Unlike the other tip channels, y'all don't clickbait, and actually say helpfull things.

That's something I really don't like about some channels. Clickbaiting with most stuff is just annoying, but I feel it's a bit different with regards to music. When you go to a video to learn about music, and then you are lied to, it feels to me like a teacher trying to manipulate and take advantage of me. I think it's especially gross to deceive people innocently trying to learn.

And also they don't repeat info that other channels say. How many people do you think have been told to crank the snare side! It chokes the drum!

I dig that Cody uses so many old Ludwig drums for these videos. I own and play 50's & 60's era Ludwig drums. Your drums sound familiar. Almost like home. I enjoy applying these lessons to my own drums. These old tubs now perform at their best. Dig it, Cody. I believe, one day, these videos will become legendary in the drumming community. They already have. Thanks fellas.

Thank you for another great video.. I learned the hard way about matching the width of the snares to the bed.. oops.. On my 13" I ended up getting the PureSound 'double-wound' which is basically 40 wires within a couple of inches wide.. absolutely love it.. somewhat 'brash' perhaps and it takes some experimenting regarding tension.. They are closer to that vintage sound than any other (non-gut) snares that I have tried.

I just tried 12 Strand Ludwig wires on my 6.5 Copper Phonic and I’m thrilled with the sound. It’s surprising how much snare sound you can get from a 12 strand set. On the other hand, I have a late 70’s 6.5 Gretsch and tried a 42 strand set of wires and it sounds great. Snare beds like the Holland tunnel.

AWESOME video - this one really demystified A LOT of the questions I came across when adjusting and choosing snare wires for my various drums! Nowadays, I like using 30- or 42-strand wires on metal drums like the black beauty clones, brass, and my Supraphonic and 16- or 20-stranders on wood drums. But now after watching this video I might start choosing 16-strands for times where I don't close-mic the snare.

I made my own snare using a mapex 8x14 snare shell, and all dw hardware and a set of 42 strand wires. The shell was a 6ply maple shell, and I sticker bombed it before I put it all together. I LOVE it!! It sounds great, and with the dw mag throw off and 3p butt plate I can get a few different snare sounds. Oh and to finish it off I put the pdp wood hoops on it. All together ive got like $450 in it, but it sounds like a drum worth double that. I also have a set of 20 strands I can throw on it too, but after I put the 42's on it I haven't taken em off.

I started with the stock 20 strands on my Mapex Exterminator. They were fine. Once a wire popped and I needed to replace them I tried the Puresound Custom 16 strand. They sounded good but I tend to play a lot of rimshots and the snare sound was simply getting lost. I put some 24 strand of the same type on last week and it was instantly exactly the sound I was searching for. That extra bit of “air” in each hit. Loving them.

Very interesting, thank you! The thing I've taken away from this, most of all, is that rather than changing components (heads/snare bed/hoops, etc), I need to get a better understanding of how to use what I already have. I've found a huge difference in my snare sound if I don't fit the snare bed correctly.

I have a mid-70s Pearl steel snare (#4515) which never seemed to open up. But when I put in 42's, it finally came alive. True it kind of compresses the sound of the drum when you really lean into it, due to the sheer weight of more strands. But in sonically dry environments and at low to moderate playing levels, the extra sustain of the snares helps give the drum a "happy" character. My other snares (13", 12", 10") are all on thinner "normal" wires though, and I have no plans of changing them because they sound fine as is.

+1 on the channel! As to snare wires, I prefer the dryness and articulation of Puresound Concert series. They are made out of a hardened steel alloy (stainless?), where most wires are made of untreated, softer, raw steel; a noticeable difference. I've tried high-count snare wires, but went back to the Concerts for my snares.

Good video. I recently purchased several older Ludwig drums that had 12 strand concert snare wires, and have noted that there is much less buzz from electric bass and guitar when I play live music using them in a confined stage area. If snare buzz is a problem in that situation, I think it might help to go with fewer wires. I don't notice any significant reduction in "snap" with fewer wires, however.

With respect to the 42 strand wide snares, I would estimate around 1974 or so is when Gretsch pushed this concept. I recall this vividly and went to our local music store to inquire. A friend of mine had a Gretsch set and went this route when it was broadly announced. Many of my other percussionist friends went this route as well as myself changing over from 20 to 42 on a 5.5 x 14" acrylic Fibes snare and a chrome 6.5 x 14" Fibes snare. The sound was impressive indeed. As you accurately point out, it was a lot more snare sound. I recall when the snares were loosened in Off mode, I'd adjust the snare plastic straps/or strings to the reso head just a minute distance (about an 1/8th of an inch evenly on both sides) vs. hanging. This prevented the necessity for over tightening/torquing the snare control knob. My snare strands rarely if ever popped. The factory strings that are equipped with the snare strand might not always be the best as they add a small degree of separation from the reso head. To minimize this gap further, a fishing line with a higher pound pull or even dental floss might be an option to experiment with.

Hi, this is my favorite YT drum channel! You guys need to do a video on how drum shell depth affects the tone. There seems to be some misconceptions and superstitions regarding snare, tom and bass drum depth online. Like some drummers tend to believe that the deeper the drum, the more low freqs you're gonna get. Which is a truth with some pretty serious modifications IME!

I’ve always thought 42 was overkill BUT I bought a Tama SLP Black Brass snare and it came with 42 strands and it sounds so good and beefy and it’s not too jingly with the tiniest bit of vibration. It really depends on the drum itself. The slp Black brass works perfect with the 42s, I usually never change out the snare wires and keep it with what Tama puts on it and I’ve always liked how each Tama snare came. The slp dynamic bronze sounds great, the slp g bubinga sounds great, and the slp Black brass sounds great.

Andy Ham I have all those snares except the SLP Bronze.....but I have an SLP Acrylic and SLP G Walnut. Tama knows what they’re doing. I just slapped a 30 strand Puresound Custom on my 1988 Artstar Birch and I think that might be too wide for that what seems to be a narrow snare bed. I didn’t get to lay into it yet but I had to whack it fairly hard for the wires to get moving. Might have to go back to the 20 strands. Merry Christmas guys. Once again.....excellent video with nice in depth analysis.

I have a pdp maple shell with maple hoops snare. It has 42 strand wires. Tuned tight, almost choked. Super crisp, sharp, and cutting.

I've got the SLP, too. I was considering buying 20 strand wires but also know that on other snare drums they sound to airy compared to when you're used to 42s. I've noticed the wires got a bit ringy after time so I'mma get the new Tama carbon 42s with those gold endplates that came out.

40-42 snare wires can be very useful in case you have a "not so good" snare drum.it can add more bottom end and more definition for ghost notes and rolls.and since is wider,it can be like a little bit of dampening in case you have some unwanted overtones.of course, maybe you will have to make some adjustements to achieve the sound you're aftter.but if you're on a budget, this will improve any cheapo snare.good video !!

Question: If I use 40-42 Snare wires , will there be more Snare Buzz when hitting Toms?

@@Chiroman527 In general and depending on physics I'd say definitely yes, at least a little more, but would suggest to compare the different setup on the individuell Drumset, maybe it's actually not such a big deal

You just solved the biggest problem with my stadium snare. Nobody has been able to tell me how to fix the problem with my wide snares, so I’ve been using a shallower snare shell. I just went in a fixed it in , like , two minutes. 👍

That was really interesting. I just purchased a kind of selfmade wooden Snare with a 42 on it. Already thought it sounds quite fat and really loud besides thinking it might be on there to compensate for the otherwise mediocre quality of the drum. Never seen or considered it before. Now thanks to your video I know what I might try with it.

Great vid! I have a Ludwig LB402B and 8x14 Black Magic which both came with 16 strand wires. I bought a couple pair of Gretsch 42's and didnt have much luck at first- they just sounded sloppy, especially on the 402B. Way too much "sizzle". I re-leveled the wires following Kenny Sharretts' video and they both sing now. Lesson being, the 12's, 16's and 20's seem to be a little more forgiving of misalignment, but the 42's will get ya if they're not aligned right. And they weren't off by much either. At least that's my experience.

Another important consideration with drumset is how much sympathetic buzz you're willing to tolerate when you play your toms and bass drum. Obviously, wider snare wires will tend to buzz more, all other things being equal.
