#42 Butsumoku-ji
Around the second year of the Daidō era, Kobo Daishi met an old man pulling a cow in this area, and as he was invited to walk on the cow's back, he saw a jewel hanging from the top of a large camphor tree, emitting light. I saw it.
If you look closely, you will see that this is a jewel that Daishi threw towards the east with Sanko when he returned from Tang Dynasty, hoping that a place with good fortune would be chosen.
Daishi decided to build a hall in this area, believing it to be a sacred place.
The master carved a statue of Dainichi Nyorai out of camphor tree, buried a jewel between his eyebrows, and made it a white pagoda. He enshrined it as his principal image, named it ``Ichikayama Butsugoku-dera,'' and carved it with ``Heart Sutra'' and ``Heart Sutra,'' which he had copied in cursive. It is said that a volume of the Kegon Sutra was dedicated to him.
After that, the temple attracted worshipers as Dainichi, the Buddha who protects the safety of cows and horses, and during the Kamakura period it flourished, serving as a family temple for the Saionji family, the lords of Uwajima.
A hall called the livestock hall in the precincts is dedicated to cow and horse straw sandals, as well as ceramics and plaques depicting cows and horses.
At a nearby farm, I went to visit the shrine when rice planting was finished, received a guardian tag for the cows and horses, returned home, and pasted it on the pillar of the livestock barn.
In the past, people prayed for the safety of the livestock that farmed with them, but these days, memorial services are held for the spirits of animals, including pets.
●Point to watch around.
Bell cherry blossoms with thatched roof
The unique thatched-roofed bell tower that gives off a unique atmosphere at Butsugokuji Temple is said to have been rebuilt during the Genroku era (1688-1704), and has a history of over 300 years.
・Livestock hall
This hall is typical of Butsuguji Temple, which is known as the guardian Buddha of cattle, horses, and livestock.
Every year, on the second day of the ox in the sixth month of the lunar calendar, a cucumber is used as a scapegoat for humans, cows, and horses to ward off disease, and then the cucumber is thrown into a river.
The process is to verbally explain your prayer and hand over the Japanese melon you brought with you, and he will make a hole in it and make a prayer.
Stuff the bill into the hole, cover it with soybeans, and enjoy.
It is a good idea to take this home and place it in your alcove or Buddhist altar.
It is said that if you chant a prayer while stroking the bad parts of your body, you will receive good luck.
