EP 43 - Disposable Video Brochure Teardown

On today's episode I take a video brochure apart and salvage components from it. These video brochures are designed to play back a video advertisement when opened, and are often provided to doctors' offices, architecture firms, and other professional environments as a means to advertise and describe products. This one in particular offers a re-charging port; however, it does not appear to be re-programmable.
Thanks for watching!

What??? I got the exact same CoStar/LoopNet brochure at my work. When I connected it to a PC, I found three mp4 files. I switched one of them to Rick Roll my coworkers. This joke never gets old. Never gonna give it up.

For some of these these units, you can unlock the mass storage mode by pressing the play (or some button) button 4 times when USB is connected.

I have one but pressing the play button 4 times while connected didn't work. Any other ideas? I got it to connect a while back but I can't remember how I did it. EDIT: Nevermind. I was just using a faulty usb cable (power worked but no data lines). I tried a different one and it worked!

Just came across this video. Well done. In most cases, the USB mode is enabled so the end-user can repurpose it and upload his or her own files. In some applications, the content is protected by a sequence of the button presses. We have done it for companies that do not want the message to be erased, or, for some entertainers, their custom video for this or that fan to be uploaded to the Internet. There is also a way to change the firmware to change the function of the buttons, but that requires special software and some programming knowledge. See more uses at our website.

Can the display be disconnected and hooked up somehow to act as a mini monitor with a HDMI input?

I think these devices are not disposable. Most of them come from companies doing "business to business" and you can put them in your office to play videos. Il looks like it can be reused as its basically a 32-bit SoC for applications like MP4 players or digital photo frames thst is connected to some flash memory and even some RAM. I think this device may even be running Linux, or could be flashed with.

I have a similar device and want to flash it. Do you know how I could do this?

@@harryflaherty4684 I'm not sure, but since people have got it to play their own videos by connecting it to a PC work a USB cable and presenting the play button 4 times to allow USB access

Couldn't the display be driven by a replacement LVDS board ?
@DielectricVideos

Possibly; although the pinout of the ribbon cable was not publicly available. I suppose you could take the time to probe each pin and try to reverse-engineer the cable pinout, then use an LVDS controller to drive the display.

Dielectric Videos I'm not sure it's LVDS. On the small panels (i would say from 320×240 to 640×480 panels), the interface is usually 24 bit paralell with HSYNC, VSYNC and pixel clock signals.
