In this episode we take our 9ft Welsford Sherpa ‘Sea Pup’ on a mini adventure to prove that size isn’t everything. We circumnavigate Australia’s oldest existing lighthouse, then spend a night camping underneath this capable little micro cruiser on Bruny Island.

I think the Sherpa looks a lot simpler and easier build than the Scamp, you've got yourself a winner there, thanks for sharing.

Man your living the life! Eff materialism, the rat race, golddiggers, and conspicuous consumption! The waterway systems will never go away; if anything they'll increase! And all free, no traffic, no internal composition pollution, no control grid, you are free!

G’day mate, looks like a great little boat, however from the shot of the boat upturned, there seems to be no scope for hat dagger board to “give” if it grounds. Is the case designed to take shocks like that? I’m just thinking back to my childhood sabot days where an extended case allowed the dagger board to tilt backwards and absorb some impact energy 🤔
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx Месяц назад
If I hit something with the CB down the impact would throw me out of the dinghy before something gave way. The strength to weight ratio on John's designs are far more than a sabot.

Looks good, BUT, in the Caribbean the bugs -- noseeums, mosquitos, etc, would eat you alive before morning. But a cheap mosquito net would drape right over the top or hang down from the seats... either way.

My sleeping bag has a net over the top and prevents the bugs from eating me at night. Thanks for watching.

Have you sailed Michael Storer's OZ Goose? How does it compare to the Sherpa? I'm guessing the Goose is faster but less forgiving and can't be rowed. Would you take it microcruising?

do you think the sherpa is big enough as a tender to carry 3 people? i'm looking at it as a downsize from the massive tinny i've currently been using, but if it's gonna work it has to be able to carry three people. any thoughts?
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx 3 месяца назад
Yep. She’ll take 3 no problem. I’ve seen pix of 5 onboard! The Sherpa is a great load carrier. 👍🏾⚓️

Hello, I really like the Sherpa design and for years I have never been able to like inflatable tenders and could never fit them next to a classic sailboat. Recently, I have been seriously interested in making a composite (due to lightness) tender, Is it possible to use it as a motorized tender by making a change to the Sherpa design and Would it be a wise choice to undertake such a task?
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx
@SmallCraftTasmania-ms4sx 5 месяцев назад
Hi. Yes, if you mean use a small outboard. The transom is designed to take an outboard.
@peterthornton2912

I have a Sherpa with a 2.5hp mercury. Either long arms or a tiller extension recommended. You definitely don't need more power. Yamaha 2 hp would be good choice too. Very easily driven hull. Goes a very long way on one litre of fuel.

Lovely boat. I am looking at a similar build. It would be very interesting to see a capsize drill. I don’t know what your experience is with capsize drill in similar boats but these ‘little’ guys can hold a lot of water.. A controlled capsize with people around to help would enable you to think about recovery. Can you pull the dagger board from outside of the boat to use as a step ? Do you have sufficient bailing bucket ? Are your lockers sufficiently secured ! Do you need extra rope or hand holds to aid righting/getting aboard. Also you seem to have a lot of loose gear - which I know if unavoidable in a small dinghy but maybe this would give you some ideas for secure stowage Please don’t take my comment as criticism, that not how it’s intended, just food for thought, also not many RU-vid videos about this so maybe it could be good for views. Enjoy your sailing 👍

Thanks mate. It seems so long ago that I made this video and was just a bit of fun. Sea Pup is sadly no longer part of our fleet, but we do have some capsize videos planned in some of our 'larger' dinghies. Stay tuned...
