On the Christmas Morning 1841, Fanny Mendelssohn presented her husband, the painter Wilhelm Hensel, with a gift -- a collection of piano pieces titled Das Jahr (The Year). This deeply personal work includes some of her most brilliant piano writing. Each movement represents a month of the year and can stand on its own, but together they make up a fascinating work, a musical diary that marks the passing year.
Das Jahr has not been published for almost 150 years, until 1989. Another manuscript was discovered and published in 2000. It includes vignettes by Fanny’s husband Wilhelm Hensel at the title page of each movement, as well as epigraphs from the couple’s favorite German poets. It is a celebration of the things that were most dear to their family - art, poetry and music!
The videos were shot over the course of 2021 at our living room and at Faust Harrison Pianos in New York City.

I already listened to The Year but I must say that this performance is a transfiguration of the music ... Never heard like this ....it is as something else, completely different, with so many colours, atmosphere.... Really brilliant, beautiful !! You are an artist not only a pianist.... Anna, I hope your family is safe, as I red that you are from Ukraine ! We are all very sad for this Incredible situation....Thanks for all you offer to us with so talent ....I listen to you from Italy....I know that many children are refugees in my country, France, with some association.

thank you, this was my project during the pandemic to learn it and record it one month at a time. I absolutely love this work, so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your kind words about Ukraine, we are absolutely heartbroken over it. While I have lived in the US for many years I have a large family in Ukraine, their way of life as they knew it has been destroyed, some have lost everything and are refugees in Europe, some came to the States and others are still home.

Does this piece exist on cd, perhaps in the collection Donna Voce ? ... I know it by heart nowadays 😂. The more I listen to it, the more appreciate it.

Still listening to it, a few times a week. How awesome is this piece. The more I get to know it, the more I'm convinced it is a great work of Fanny Mendelssohn and a great interpretation of Anna Shelest... @Anna: you should also make a studio recording of it ;-)

Большое спасибо! На мой взгляд это её лучшее произведение для фо-но. Первые части записывались в маленькой комнате с роялем, зеркальный угол это попытка создать объем.

Dear Anna Shelest - I just found out that you are from Ukraine... Our spirit is with you! we have taken up many refugees from Ukraine - I live in the Netherlands. Must be hard for you to see from a distance how your people / family etc. are suffering, and at the same time perhaps inspiring that your people fight with so much courage...

@@ShelestatthePiano I didn't know that you came from Kharkiv (I just read some more about its current predicament on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kharkiv_(2022) ) I completely understand that this caused an unimaginable amount of distress - I am still baffled that this can happen in 21st century Europe ... Its so brutal, its so "19th/early 20th century" ... Lets only keep alive the amazing music of that time - not the wars...

thank you so much! It's hard to pick one, there are few tricky moments in various movements. But perhaps February, June and September are least forgiving in a live performance.
