I LOVE your bathroom choices. The only thing I would change is the flooring. If it is currently a wood floor - I'd keep the wood floor. It's always nice to keep character where you can in these amazing buildings. But either way you two are very thoughtful and have a good sense of design, scale, etc.
I like your plans for a light an airy bathroom. The color will look crisp & clean. Can’t wait to see the progress. Don’t forget to take us along when Brocante shopping! Take care.
Do not skip with the tile. Do not install vinyl tiles and do ceramic in the shower. You will regret it. Also perhaps pull back. Take a good hard look at priorities. You should make the kitchen you first goal. Spend good money there.
Like the colour designs for the bathroom and everything except Im not a fan of vinyl flooring, but it’s your home you choose whatever you want and I’m sure it’ll be fine
We've recently decided, thanks to viewer suggestions, to seal the wood floor with a waterproofing product. So we will be refinishing the old wood floor and then protecting it, which means we won't need to cover it with vinyl or anything. Thanks for watching!
The Notaio (in Italian) or Notary was and still is much more than what "Notary" means in the US. They function as lawyers, and have all the legal power over real estate matters, with the exclusion of involving real lawyers if there is a land dispute lawsuit. And they make excellent money! So your house was most probably upgraded into the 19th century by that family who had the resources to do so. It also means that definitely, one of your rooms was the Notary's office. My bet is that the room with the large colorful niche enclaves on the ground floor was his office - decorated to impress. Because the Notary always had a huge ornate desk in their office (for all the family members and others to sit for real estate transactions), the room had to be big. Also, the old wooden stairs going to the attic are surely early 18th century. definitley not later. Possibly earlier. Safe travels! 😊👍
We want it to feel more like the style of the bedroom, which is going to have the painted boiserie and a nod to 18th century interior design. Thanks for watching! 🙂
I’d would refurbish the wood floors in the bathroom. It fits more with the period of your house and are easy to care for. We love the fact that our bathroom floors are all wood. They are gorgeous. I think the floral vinyl would cheapen the look you’re going for.
Wood floors are gorgeous, but we would rather have a durable cover over them in the shower room. The floor is going to constantly be getting wet - and this is a guest room, so we won't be able to oversee how careful people are being about the floors. We don't need the extra worry about protecting original wood floors in there. Thanks for watching! 🙂
I think you could make wood floors work (and last) but even more I like you two sticking with your plans (you’ve clearly given consideration to all options). You have excellent instincts!! Best!😊
Funny, my family lives in England. They love to use those shower coffins too! They give me nightmares! Brocantes have usually got a good selection of lighting. You might have to visit several, but perseverance pays off as I'm sure you know. As long as you're shopping, have you considered a bureau type piece of furniture for the bathroom that you could cut in a sink? I think the richer wood would add some depth to the space. The lower drawers could be storage.
Shower coffins are nightmare-inducing. 😅 Thanks for your comments. The sink within a wooden furniture piece isn't really to our taste, but if I happen across the right piece, maybe. I just love the look of white ceramic.
I think it's a really good idea to start with a smaler project. On top it will be great to have a nice little bathroom and a hot shower when you want to relax for a moment.
turn the "fishscale" shower panels 180 degrees so the curve of the scales is downward in keeping with the water shedding nature of real scales, shingles, etc.
I truly love the renovation ideas for your bathroom. That vinyl flooring is quite pretty, and so are the soft green wall color and gold accents. This may just be the American in me, 😉😊 but I say it's your home, do what you feel is right for you. While I think fitting in with a new culture is great, we have to also hold onto where we came from. Best of luck to you. Oh, and that other wallpaper you uncovered is cool too.
You mentioned the little door & "dressing room" near the area where a bed was located. The narrow door is called a Modesty Door. Back in the day, it wasn't proper for a woman to be seen "unclothed" (not fully dressed) by her husband, so she would dress for bed in a room outside the bedroom & then use the door to carefully & quietly slip under the covers. A bit prudish for sure, but those were the times in the 18th & 19th centuries.
Yes, the modesty door is what I had heard before. But some other commenters here have said that it was used by the maid to discreetly remove the chamber pot. I have been trying to research bed nooks and modesty doors for a while now and finding nothing about them.
I love your ideas for that bathroom. The color palette is perfect for that space and it's so pretty and serene at the same time.I wish I could find that flooring for my downstairs powder room. This is giving me some great ideas as I've been stuck on the colors for that bathroom. You guys have such great taste!
Aww thanks so much for the compliments. 😊 I forgot to list the name of the flooring company in the video. It's a UK company called For the Floor And More. Here's a link to that design: forthefloorandmore.com/shop/floorcoverings/1/kassia-flooring/
We're not afraid of pattern mixing. 🙂 The shower panels are far less busy (a far simpler pattern and only two tones of green) than the floral pattern on the floor. That's why they'll be fine together. Thanks for watching!
The "nook" is where the bed would have been. Your bathroom was probably a maid's/servant room and the small doorway in the bed nook was the servant's door.
That door you are right. Its probably the master bedroom and the extra bathroom is made for more comfort and privacy. The room could be original a sort of boudoir or salon. The ground floor could have been used professional. Also its posible that the original house is splitted and neighbour houses were parts of it. All to look for at the government archives.
Whoa, that is really interesting about the plaque! It's amazing that this townhouse existed so long ago--we tend to think townhouses are such a modern concept.
The bathroom you’re planning is pretty but I agree with the comment about it being too modern for the house. I’d have gone for more period tiles and flooring. But it’s your house not mine! ❤
We love mixing the old with the new, and we aren't trying to make a period perfect house. What period would we choose anyway? ☺️ This house is a hodgepodge that has been changed so much over time. Thanks for watching!
The bathroom is going to be an oasis of calm, and I bet it will look bigger than it does now! Keep up the good work, just take care to not overwork yourselves😊
Your home deserves your design ideas and personal touches. Thank you for sharing your content. I look forward to viewing your adventure and cheering you on. 🎉❤

6:06 It's going to be absolutely delightful! The only thought I can offer is about the shower glass. First, in such a small bath you'll certainly need a fully enclosed shower, so, 2 glass panels with one of them hinged. Second and more important, typical shower glass is 6mm thick. But you can get 8mm and 10mm. I strongly encourage to get at least 8mm. It will be a bit more expensive but every day you'll be glad you spent that extra bit. I put 8mm in my shower and I'm so glad I did. The 6mm glass shakes, rattles, and feels really flimsy, not a good thing when you're standing in a wet shower.
Thanks for the tips about the glass! We're hoping the single panel will work how we envision it; it's really too cramped for more panels or shower doors. So we'll see - we need to take careful measurements when we're there again.
A skylight to/through the attic with a railing or a glass encasing, sometimes even with a mirror system to redirect light around it is quite usual for old buildings like yours.
I’m loving your design for the petite bathroom! You also speak well, may I say? I would like to suggest another option for your bathroom mirror? I think a Venetian type mirror would also look charming above the sink. Whatever you do, I am sure it will look beautiful though, regards Susan at Hobart.
The bathroom design looks great. I think looking for a chandelier in brocantes is a good idea. You may even fi d other items such as shelving. Good luck!
I think the bathroom is going to look fantastic...but you realize,I hope, that your going to have to bring in a sewer line for the toilet? The bidet is only gray water. 😊
I have a walk in shower like this - double the size with a glass panel to the front and a gap to walk in. I wish we had gone for a glass door rather than the gap being open as we get an insane amount of water on the floor after each shower. Luckily we have underfloor heating so it dries up but without it it would be a real nuisance
I think the colors, metals and fixtures for your ensuite will look wonderful. But why did you remove the bidet? I moved to Italy from the US many years ago, and slowly over time, I came to appreciate the many uses of the bidet. Sadly, with Americans in particular, the bidet got a bad rap. 😉 Perhaps for your main bathroom, you might consider having one.
Exactly. We don't like the bidets that are a separate appliance the size of the toilet. It's unnecessary and takes up too much room. Also, in this bathroom, there was no toilet! Only a bidet. And there isn't room for both. So the bidet goes away! 🙂
@@AustintoAmboise You can always fork out the gold to buy one of those Japanese toilets that have bidet features. Actually, they aren't THAT expensive haha.
Well if we can get the old skylight refurbished that will be awesome. Not sure how you’d otherwise get more natural light in an interior room with no window??? There will be a fan, and as I’ve already explained in the video and other comments, storage isn’t an issue. Closet right outside the door; shelves and hooks in the bathroom. That’s enough for a guest bathroom. Thanks for watching!
True. Well we probably won't do that in this room. It may have one hidden under the wallpaper though - the bedroom next door does! More to investigate...
Vinyl flooring on wood only leads to one thing...one leak and the floor bows, big time, like foot high arcs....wood flooring needs to breath, vinyl is like cement on a lime and plaster brick wall..destructive and wood rots....cement outside doesn't allow walls to breathe and then the beams inside rot!!! That old shower screams "Acceptable in the 80's" by Calvin Harris. There are a couple of chateau channels here on YT where you can learn about the pitfalls of modern materials on historic buildings and what to avoid at all costs!!! Try= Escape to the Dream, Journey to the Chateau, Chateau de la Ferte, The Pethericks, Bordeaux Life.....
The plaques are consistent to the what is believed to be known of the people who inhabited the house. Mr Narcisse Dumée married in 1875 to mademoiselle Renée Elisabeth Celine Allard, daughter of Mr Aristide Remy Allard, former notaire. It would be great if they were his plaques.
Very cool. Could they have maybe belonged to the mayor you mentioned in an earlier comment? These plaques could have belonged to any ministry official, correct? Thanks again for all of the info!
@@AustintoAmboise From what I believe, a notaire would not be considered the same way as any ministry official. Notaires can be thought of as a reminiscence of corporations from before the french revolution. They belong to a distinct corporation, they have a private office, need a diploma ; but they buy their office from the state. The plaques are unique to the corporation. Auctionneers have a similar status, I think. Taxi drivers also, in a different way. Tax collectors used to have a similar status in the ancient regime, with sub-delegations for pressuring down to the lower level. So, no wonder that this particular corporation encountered problems at the revolution - at least the upper level.
I like taking modernized architecture back a couple of hundred years in character or appearance but at the same time hiding the modern conveniences of plumbing electric etc . I personally dont like modern finishes anything newer than the 1930's is too cold ir plain for me . But its your house and your taste . Do what you love . ❣️❣️❣️
i'm confident that the little area next to the bathroom was created when the ensuite bathroom was originally installed. My guess is that they put an armoire or large dresser in that space.
It's a bed nook. It's as wide as a single bed placed longways (which is what the previous owners had placed there), and it has a door in the side. It's way too big to have been designed for an armoire.
Wow, that does not feel like a fun project. But I love that you have a vision for it. Looking forward to it. Wish you all the best. Bathrooms are so awful to tackle, just yuck to me. You got this.
Disappointed that there does not appear to be any storage in bathroom (toothpaste, deodorant etc.) and that you. Chose not to install a bidet. Liked the floor vinyl and the chandelier.
As we explained in the video, it's a tiny bathroom that we want to keep uncluttered. There will be shelves above the toilet for daily use stuff, plus hooks to hang stuff, and then there's a closet right there. Also to clarify, this is in a guest bedroom, where people will have their toiletry bags, cosmetic cases, whatever they're traveling with, that can go on shelves. Toothbrush & toothpaste can be kept on the sink in some kind of holder we'll put there. Should work well and will keep the bathroom tidy. Thanks for watching!
Loving your content! Just a tip, setting your camera to 1/50 sec shutter speed will remove the flickering you see in the rooms with the fluorescent lights. Here's a video explaining including European info: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FLQMvDfERrs.htmlsi=he-saFASyILMRKTs Good Luck! I just returned from a trip to France and loved Amboise! I understand why you picked it.
Bonjour, Cela est trop " moderne" , trop magazine 's picture . Il faut de l' authentique, du bois, plus cottage que les dorures de Versailles. But no offence, just a strong feeling. Merci
Circus floral and kitch design bathroom ? Better keep it nutral 😅 Dont let people shock with such idea's. Its totally not French either European at all. 🙈
What a rude comment ! It isn't "circus floral" (whatever that means) but more traditional English. A lot of French people are anglophiles and love an English inspiration style especially when not over the top. Their inspo has a touch of English cottage with a modern touch. Would love such a bathroom myself.
Je pense que vous devriez poser du carrelage autour du lavabo car la peinture va très vite être abîmée par les projections d’eau. Pas trop de dorures, ce n’est pas Versailles mais une maison bourgeoise. Bon courage à vous.
@@isabelled4871 Reality hurts, just a matter of tast. 🙈 I saw and know a lot of people who do renovations, floors and walls properly tiled bathrooms, toilets and kitchens. Electricity, plumbing, roofing etcetera. Also when government inspection comes it can be a big problem when its not done professional. Plywood drywall homes are not their favorite. Renovations are not about decoration, some need to find out themselves. 😒
I really can't understand what a troll like you is doing on such a niche channel. WHAT "reality" hurts?? Honestly, go and watch the football or whatever ! 🙄
@@francinevincent4785 yes, a small backsplash behind the sink isn't a bad idea; we may do that. As for the gold finishes - it probably looks a lot more garish in the photos than it will in real life. These are just example photos. 🙂 Thanks for watching!
