William Figueroa, I'll try to be economic in my description. Once I knew I was having issues with short term memory, I started practicing math on Khan Academy (a great site for anyone that wants to brush up on their math skills at any level). I really did start all the way back at elementary level math, trying to figure out what was going wrong in my brain. I learned how to annotate my work on a problem so that when I lost my place, or forgot what I'd done to get to a certain point, I could resume the problem without starting over. It was really a slow, trial and error process, just like learning it the first time as a kid. Once I had figured it out, gotten back to a Calculus 1 level of proficiency, I applied to the University of Pittsburgh engineering program. Once accepted there, I eventually chose computer and electrical engineering on the advice of my mentor and boss, Dr. Rory Cooper, and some other professors in the schools of neuroscience and rehab science. As I obtained my degree, I understood several projects that introduced me to the power of Google's open source ecosystem. One of these was an app for my son to search the internet by choosing words from a constantly changing word cloud. Each time he chose a word, the cloud would update to show contextually relevant words related to the string at that point, cross-reference with a dump from the Twitter stream (in an attempt to ensure the words were also location and culturally relevant to my son). I did this using a combination of Google App Engine and their Big Data tools, and Android as the interface. As I began working at HERL, I saw that we were using too many different tools, and consequently different languages, and it was slowing collaboration. It also meant we were developing our own custom libraries for many things that already existed for free in Android. While this is true of many systems, Android is free, has a huge community of developers, and finally because Pitt teaches most of their core Computer Science courses in Java, Androids language. This meant most of our people have at least been exposed to it, even if they're not CS students. So that's the shortest explanation I can offer for how I went from basic math to Android.
