Gurcharan Singh Grewal is the general secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, which is the largest Sikh organisation tasked with managing over 280 Gurudwaras in the state of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. Grewal is a known face among the Sikh community and has been associated with Akalis and Sikh politics for around four decades. He considers Bhindranwale a martyr and says that Bhindranwale never demanded Khalistan. In an enlightening conversation with Smita Prakash, Grewal talks about the history of SGPC and its inception and his association with Bhindranwale since the 80s. Grewal also explains the reason behind Akali Dal's dominance in the SGPC elections and why other political parties haven't been able to make their way into the elections. He also talks about Amritpal and the drama over his arrest as a conspiracy by state government and central agencies and youth migration from Punjab.

I am a Hindu Punjabi and I have grown up completely surrounded by sikh families, almost all my life. He iss talking a lot of nice sounding words. But the basic message that hes giving is that religion should dominate over politics. That is the basic root cause of all kind of nefarious activities. Country comes first. If he wants religion to take prominence then he should probably move to pakistan. I stopped going to the gurudwara in USA When I saw how proudly the names and photographs of all the terrorists were displayed openly and proudly everywhere. Which is a shame because growing up in India. I do not remember going to a Hindu Temple even 10% of the time we would go to the gurudwara.. My mom would give the food supplies to the gurudwara as part of "shraadh" Activities for my grandparents because she said she is 100%. Sure that the food given there will actually be used to feed all the people Regardless of their cast color or economic status. Something she said she was sure Was not going to happen in a hindu temple. It is sad that such a wonderful religion and a wonderful, lively , brave community of people has been politicized to such an extent.. He is completely wrong. Bhindrawale was a total terrorist And propagated killing just like a terrorist. He is lying out rightly. His so called religious leader gave an interview to the thenn prominent newspaper " navbharat times" Where he clearly demanded a separate state. Worst mistake the congress party made. I hope this guy is being investigated

Majority of the Sikh comments here are heartwarming!! As a Hindu from Jammu that grew up hearing stories of the Sikh Gurus sacrifice to save humanity and that saw the gurudwara as another legitimate place of worship, these current Khalistani developments are so bewildering. Am not convinced with Grewal ji re centre working in tandem with AAP in Punjab. While he continued to point a finger at Modi ji. PM has been most supportive to Sikhs to whom I belong as per my faith. That's such a lame argument Hindus have got. They can't just digest the fact that there exists a fraction of people that followed Guru Nanak and his successive descendants which criticize a lot of their practices, and formed their own religion and see themselves as a distinct race. Basically it stems from 1947. Sikhs had to decide whether to go with Pakistan or India. Nehru made promises and managed to convince Sikh leadership I.e. SGPC. So, Sikhs left their villages in Pakistan and came to India. Only two states were partitioned; Bengal and Panjab. Bengal had very minimal bloodshed however that was not the case in Panjab. Sikhs lost a lot - read on Rawalpindi massacre in March 1947. Once Sikhs came to india, one of the promises of Nehru was Panjabi state for Sikhs. However the Centre leadership at time was scared of the bloodbath that happened and the fact that Indian army had a lot of Sikhs. So, Government of India did not keep his promises to Sikhs. It’s all part of unfinished partition business. You can also read about Anandpur Sahib resolution that listed Sikh demands. Khalistan is no where to be found.

Green revolution , milk revolution was started in punjab ( haryana too) by centrsl govt U also got industries like cycle manufacturing, locomotive manufacturing etc. Punjab is one of the highest income states. Your farmers get MSP . Most other state farmers like bihar Jharkhand , bengal , odisha dont get these benifits what more are ur demands?

True that Some Sikh leaders wanted a separate state after seeing a strong demand from Muslimbs but that was very late in 1946-47 unlike Muslims who wanted it since 1920s officially but it was not possible, because 1) British only decided to split country in two. Splitting into multiple countries was rejected eariler 2) There were no strong central level Sikh leadres like Jinnah except Tara Singh to push for separate country. Tara Singh even was against Lahore resolution. Sikhs did not have majority in most districts anywhere in West punjab, even in Lahore and most sikhs did not really care up until Feb/March 1947. Even most muslims in Punjab towns/villages did not want/care about separate country. Also Sikhs did not have enough clout with the British. Whoever were friends with British did not push it enough. I dont like Nehru but dont blame Nehru for everything. This was gross failure from sikh leaders. They could not even get Nankana sahib inside indian LOC forget lahore/Gujranawala. Listen to Prof Ishitiaq Ahmed's podcasts. 3) Sikhs never wanted to go to Pakistan. It was very clear in the riots in 1947. Sikhs did not get together with muslims much compared to Hindus where they inter married and visited temples etc.

Declining ground water, growth of commercial farming, introducing plant species not native to the land, declining land size, farmer suicides, climate change, drugs.....you still want more ? 2. You talk of Green Revolution as favour bestowed upon Punjab, it was not. Indian Government specifically chose Punjab because of the good canal network, topography and thus making the investment ripe for itself in Punjab. 3. You talk about Industries, i don't know what world you live in....but post SCL, PUNCOM no major manufacturing initiative has been started in Punjab by the Center Govt for the last 30 years. 4. Punjab being a highly sensitive border state is at risk most times . Major businesses avoid investing as opposed to mainland Indian states. So yes, Punjab needs special treatment. 5. As for justice, just tell me for 3000+ sikhs killed in the anti Sikh riots, how many culprits have been sent to the gallows ? None.......Even convictions that resulted in life sentences happened 25 years later .....so stop bulls*ting about justice.

His solution for Punjab problem was this - "Toppi vaaleyan nu gaddi chaadh do...." In 1983.... Bajeet Kaur - a sikh women who had issues with Bhindrawaale's gang member, she was raped in Akal Takht premises and her breasts were cut down while she was alive. DSP Atwaal, he came to pray in Darbaar Saahib, and he was shot down on Parikrama and Bhindrawaale's goons danced around him. Entire Golden Temple premises was converted into military grade fort - with a grenade manufacturing machine inside. And your goon saint Bhindrawaale used to say "each sikh teenager should own an AK47.... and It is just 32 Hindus which each sikh has to kill to purge the Punjab of - toppi vaale... Dhoti vaale." While all this bloody shit was going on in Golden Temple premises... sikhs were silent... and complacent. They didn't see any issue of desecration. Military grade forification of Golden Temple and ties with Pakistan and mindless killings in 1983.... it was that which necessitated military action upon golden temple. And had it not happened, a sure short Hindu massacre was coming. As regards 1984, SGPC Head must clearly answer how, from where, and for what purpose were so many weapons collected inside the Golden temple. In my view, bringing arms inside the temple amounts to its desecration. As regads SGPC, it is a "Prabandhak Committee" for Gurudwaras (Managing Committee) for Gurudwaras and that is the role. They very name says so. It does not have the mandate of representing the Sikh Community as a whole for which elections take place.

Just imagine, 6 month old Sikh babies burnt alive by coward Hindu mobs in their Rabid hatred for Sikhs in 84.Mass rapes, extrajudicial killings, burning alive in the streets of Delhi, Kanpur, Indore, Jamshedpur, Bhopal. The list goes on. Just go to the widow colonies in Delhi and tell them how proud you are. Just tell the mothers of Punjab who are still waiting for their sons to return one day, that you are proud of treating Sikhs as the Children of a lesser God. The worst is that Hindus are proud of these atrocities they have committed on Sikhs, just a minuscule minority.

10th Guru eliminated caste system by giving Singh and Kaur as Surnames but many people still uses caste surnames and still takes pride for there ancestors clans or any other reason also. It is there wish to use anything with common surnames, but Gurus eliminated varna system in Sikhi. And conditions of deprived Sikhs can only be solved through education (both religious and modern) in long run, that government and SGPC should provide. And existence of separate gurudwaras based on caste in villages is very sad thing in Sikhi and that can only be solved through collective effort in Sikh community.

Sikh gurudwara act 1925 which first time defined Sikh identity and led to creation of SGPC was passed by British and Grewal sahab is suggesting SGPC was created as a resistance to British influence on Gurudwaras. I suggest a counter by Puneet Sahani if ANI and Smita Prakash can invite him for the podcast.

The British had appointed the Mahants after kicking out the Budha dal from the gurduwaras. There was then the Akali movement which sought to take the mahants out of the gurudwaras and establish the SGPC. After many Sikhs died marching against the mahants the British govt finally gave into the Akali movement's demands and established the 1925 act that you are talking about. There is documented proof of this, and many Sikhs even died for this specific movement. You can read up on the Gurdwara Sudhaar movement (Gurdwara reform movement) if you want to. And stop bringing that Puneet mf into the conversation, he is not a Sikh.

Why is it that the more i hear SIKHS talking the more i am convinced that SIKH Separatism is coming. Even if we for a moment keep aside the KHALASTAN tag, the nature of Separatism is evident in PUNJAB. To ask a few questions 1) Is it true that cast discrimination cases have been on the rise in SIKH punjab, even to the extent that SIKHS are now converting to Christianity. 2) if you say there is no cast discrimination and the reason for establishing SIKHs was to remove cast discrimination, then why are there separate gurudwara for Jaat and not jaat sikh. 3) if you further deny existence of cast in Sikhsim, then what's the basis of having SIKHS and SIKH LIGHT INFANTRY nits in IA. 4) As per you if all the Dharam are same, as you said, then why was KHALSA ever established, afterall we would have been praying to the same god, only the mode of practice and name of the god would have changed and if you say you were a contemporary of all religions, why was there any opposition from Jahagir, after all weren't they could have seen you a SUFI sect let nurture. another observation why are Only SIKHS from PUNJAB AND CHANDIGHAR region seen abusing HINDUS GODS, why was Maa KALI temple attacked in Punjab by NIHANG SIKHS and why do we we not see such acts from SIKHS from UP, BIHAR, MAHRASTRA, MP or any other state for that matter.

Does SJPC or Khalsa panth actively support and encourage intercast Sikh marriage (seeing as cast was not practiced by Gurus, but was later adopted by the society) are Gurudwara participating in eradicating cast from Sikhism. Punjab is 58 sikh, seeing how you are a majority you should have influenced the Hindus in Punjab, why is it the other way around, is Sikhism soo weak? If castism is Hindu why are more Sikhs converting to Christianity (by mere percentage) in Punjab that in any other state. Clearly there is something wrong in Punjab. As far as your own mindset of Bhagwa is concerned, I Don't give 2 piece about it, it's your filth you deal with it.

In a short interview, Sardar Gurcharan Singh Grewal presented the case of bravery of the Sikhs in getting independence from British and also eloquently presented the ailments of the Sikhs caused by corrupt & criminal political parties of India. It has never been Hindu vs Sikhs, it has been the work of “jealous and unaccomplished people” who hate Sikhs being very hard working, spiritual and always keen to serve others. Ethics and human rights have vanished from the land of India and only movie actors or political offices have been considered as the Masters, thus the downfall of India is must.
