there was so much crap from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s...I can go on. There is terrible music from every time period, it doesn't matter, new or old.
yeah surprised to see Skip on bass, i saw the Byrds in 1970/71 with Skip, and the New Riders in 71 without Skip but never knew he was in New Riders here in 74.
What a line up, what a mix for this week's trip in the Way Back Machine! Bobby "Blue" Bland, singing the Blues, Olivia Newton-John sings a couple of 🤩her hits, nice! Boz Scaggs before Low Down, I haven't heard these, or maybe I have but don't remember. New Riders of the Purple sage, I was fascinated by the title of their album, "The Adventures of Panama Red", because of the legendary weed of the same name 😁, this will be my first time seeing them, or maybe I have and Red wiped out the memory 🤣. Marvin Hamlisch, the hit maker, plays a couple of good ones. 🚨 Melvin Van Peebles, is an Obscure Alert for me, his son is the actor, Mario Van Peebles, I knew Melvin was a director, didn't know he was a musician. Richard Pryor is a HOOT 🦉, he will bring a sensibility that is no longer tolerated in today's era, too bad, because he can take the sting out of things with wit, we have lost a lot of tolerance and civility these days😪. This will be a wonderful trip to 1974! See you there!
Surprising turn from Melvin Van Peebles who I knew as a filmmaker, novelist and actor but not as a musician . He did the Sweet Sweetback soundtrack with a young Earth Wind and Fire. But I don't know if he ever toured or performed much. Would love to know more about his backup band here. Excellent players.
Random "herbal" thought, but the only thing that scares me about Artificial Intelligence is that they create an AI so powerful, I'll be sitting here watching this episode, and say, Richard Pryor or Wolfman Jack break the fourth wall and starts having a conversation with me. I mean, we might be only a couple of years away from that, and sure, that would lead me to more questions than answers (especially if they start asking questions about what happens to their future selves, or less intense Pryor asking me about "The Rumble in the Jungle" but begging for me not to give away spoilers, but also wanting hints on who he should put money on), I would have to assume that Interactive AI 1970s TV show (or more realistic, an App where one interacts with dead celebrities. Man, now I might fear ChatGPT that much more. ChatGPT Man Jack) might be the best therapist I have had in years, LOL.
On a more comforting note, I can never be haunted by a ghost again, because I can just claim it's AI technology ~! Even better, best invention ever, Wolfman ChatGPT, ask it a question, and it answers back in the voice of Wolfman Jack.
What a great lineup. I got to admit I came here for Olivia though. Haha. She's such an underrated singer everyone in the comments thinks she's lip syncing, no not at all these are all live vocals.❤❤❤
Bustin' Loose I thought was Pryor's best movie. Starring Cicely Tyson. The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Moter Kings. I thought it was the second best movie. it was filmed in my home state of Georgia. some of my friends and I watched it being filmed.
My best picks: * Marvin Hamlisch's arrangement of a Scott Joplin rag as played in "The Sting" with Newman and Redford. * Marvin Hamlisch's different arrangement of "The Way We Were" in the movie of the same name with Streisand and Redford * Olivia Newton-John "If You Love Me Let Me Know" and "If Not For You"
@@robmatlock7675 Rob, I know you dig country and country rock, the New Riders first album is a five star classic, had three members of the Dead Lesh, Hart and Garcia on pedal steel before Buddy Cage, all the songs are magnificent with significant lyrics, their best album by far.
While you're checking out Ruth, look for Ruth Underwood Black Page Piano. It demonstrates Ruth's piano playing of one of Frank Zappa's most interesting "melodies" and the way she describes it and him. It, and she, is gorgeous.
@@Greggery_Peccary I looked into that Mothers 10 LP History of Collected Improv and is quite rare and worth over a grand if the condition is great and includes the book, so hold onto it, I wasn't aware of that box set and has quite a history. Also, when you mentioned Jimi used records, did you mean with Curtis Knight? When I mentioned FZ with a sax player I meant on George Duke "Feel" LP he is Obdewl'l X on guitar on 2 tracks.
@@brötzmannsax Curtis Knight sounds familiar. Might have been the album I had. I'm keeping all my Zappa records. I have Flint, post-GFR that features FZ on guitar on two tracks. You said you never bought used records. That's where you find the gems. The folks who work in those stores are smart enough to put Zappa-related stuff in with his own. I scored another big 10-LP box titled Mystery Box (A 10-Record Monstrosity) sometime along the way. Back in 1983, I found the Edison Records edition of Läther at a flea market. Back then, MA still had the blue law on the books that prevented stores operating on Sundays, but flea markets were allowed. Anyway, somebody had cool records to sell, and I scored that for $40. On a side note, because of that blue law, mall parking lots were wide open on Sundays and that's where lots of teens learned to drive. Good times. I know you're familiar with Bleecker Street. I was shopping in Manhattan way back in the 80s and scored some Zappa bootlegs in a shop there. Might have been Bleecker Bob's... Anyway, the owner had an interesting pricing policy. He put one of any given title in the bin and after it sold, he immediately replaced it with another, and the price raised by two dollars. That would give you the incentive to buy it now because it might cost more tomorrow. But then again, Zappa is such a niche artist, the same record would likely sit there for a few weeks before selling. Just reminiscing...
All of Olivia's songs here are live vocals. I know her music inside out.. The backing tracks are obviously pre-recorded from the album, but she's absolutely singing live to them.
WHY WAS ONJ LIP SYNCING THAT WAS UNNECESSARY?? NOT GOOD!! MARIO PEBBLES SUCKED AND SOME OF RICHARD PRYOR JOKES FELL FLATTER THAN SOME WOMEN CHESTS!! THANK GOD FOR BOBBY BLUE BLAND AND BOZ SCAGGS FOR BRINGING REAL MUSIC TO REAL MUSIC PLATFORM. MARVIN H. WORKED WITH BARBRA S.
