Its due to the reason that in press conference you are face to face with a lot of people, some of whom may be of better calibre/intellect than you and some might have come with with sharp questions, which requires a lot of courage to reply impromptu because it may reveal my imperfections to you. Why to risk my self built as well as team built persona by holding open press conferences. It can be best explained by comparing with filmy hero/ heroine - they have all perfections / imperfections like any one of us but through makeup, soft lenses, camera angle, lightings etc. they are made to look better than us and therefore we adore them. Basically when I have larger than life persona like a Film Hero why to risk it. In your own podcasts also, we observe that you sometimes self restrict to re-ask some pointed questions to your guests for the sake of your show. So till the leader is devoted to his country, we should accept certain restrictions around his personality.

Congratulations in having back to back the two narratives on Modi-ji and India that are being offered here in the US. One view, that I also expressed in the WSJ as a comment to Mr. Dhume's hit job (during the PM’s visit), based on Modi-ji’s speech at the US Congress as well as the events at the White House that had preceded the speech at the US Congress. It appeared to me that the President and the First Lady, along with most of the members of the US Congress, had gone out of their way to be excellent hosts and I thought the Indian PM was particularly gracious reciprocating that warmth. I had also said in that comment to Mr. Dhume what many of us felt here in the US. The PM came to celebrate the changed perception of India and Indians, those who reside in India but also those of the diaspora like me, and he did that with exemplary grace. I hadn't seen this episode but I must thank Mr. Shekhar for all his effort over the years that I was unaware of being rather focused with the work and family (and not knowing anything outside Kolkata and the institutions that I attended, IITKGP and IIMC, also in West Bengal). In the next Episode 73, which also I hadn't seen before Modi-ji's visit, is very similar to what I heard from Mr. Zakaria on CNN. Mr. Saran repeated that line of thought, namely, there's total continuity in the positions of the various US Presidents and the various Indian PMs. In my opinion, it is industrial grade gas lighting even though the former US President Obama's rather distasteful outburst coupled with all the choreographed observations from various outlets, such as the NYT, Washington Post and even the Wall Street Journal predicting the breakup of India. Mr. Saran talked about how there are always the same people in the "establishment" in the US irrespective of who the President is: Trump, Obama, or Biden. Go figure! I'm amazed at your skill Smita-ji of giving both the views equal air time (and keep your lovely smile reminiscing about the good old days with Mr. Saran) but Biden who was considered to be the dumbest person in the room by Obama is giving that anti-india, very pro-Muslim, faction of the Democratic Party short shrift, not surprisingly, with the support of US big businesses. The war between these two sides in the US is far from over.

I myself moved from USA and was disappointed having joined Digital India , etc but having posted at the SEMT Ina wrong AP state with horrible bureaucracy. Later moved back as a CEO. Even started a company to serve the government but failed just because of bureaucracy. Sad.

The bit about Nehru's physical and mental decline after the 1962 war with China... I have no sympathies for the man, only an indefinable sadness for the country. This was a man who ignored military advise, made a conscious - and imperious - decision to keep the Indian Air Force grounded (though we had air superiority), and a supercilous attitude. No, no sympathies for this man who cost India so much - in terms of the Partition, the China war, the Socialist economic policies that put back the country by some 60 years, and successive decisions with regard to UN Security Council membership (he opted to have China take the place of India), membership to ASEAN that Lee Kuan Yew offered India, and many others best forgotten. In my books, he has no place in history.
