Ep 72 Trying the Gas Vap for the first time

My first try at using the Gas Vap to vaporize some of my beehives to kill varroa mites. Like the InstantVap, this is a cordless vaporizer, but it runs on gas instead of batteries. This is not a review of the Gas Vap or a "how to" video, I am learning as I go. I will review it in a future video after I have spent more time using it.

Hi Chris. Heat this with that !?! Think I will stick with OA via the Trickle Method. Take a 60ml Vet (Pet) Drench Syringe. Add recommended*OA Crystal's to warmed 1:1 Syrup and Trickle* to each Seam of Bees. Gas Bottles, Batteries, Car Cables, even a House Power Cord and Gas Fume Mask is all to much and Scary. 🤭 So a Trickle / Dribble of OA is my go to method. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 * Have not given the % of OA Crystal to Syrup ratio. As your Country might have different Veterinary Medicine Codes of use to that what is recommended here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😉

Just a side note those tubes will sometimes stop up an the vapor will not come out an it builds up Pressure an it will blow the cap off the tank that the OA goes in an if you are bending over it it will blow the hot OA in your face . I use a small wire after each treatment just to check to make sure the tube is clean an be on the safe side. Thanks for your information. THANKS

Great tip, thanks! I did notice that it was almost blocked up after the five hives I did for the video, but I didn't spot it until after I posted the video. I will make sure to mention that in the review video I make. Cheers Chris

@@KiwiWildman You can also just take the torch to the tube and it will sublimate the accumulations in the tube, making it clear again. Of course, this requires a second torch or disconnecting the unit.

Been looking forward to this I think the small gas torch they provide would make it easier to use and the big difference for me being a small hobby beekeeper between the gas-vap and instant-vap is cost of the unit. Also, do you go through a broodless period down South? That to me would be an ideal time to vap the hive. In the Top of the South where I an I still have a lot of brood in my hives so would have to do them 3 times 5 days apart but watching a few of the vids about the gas-vap I think I’ll end up getting one

Yes, you are tight about the smaller bottle. They are lighter and probably much eashier to use. I have been looking into them for the review video I am gong to do and found something I didn't expect about the costs of the gas. I will save that for the video. Some of my hives go brood-less over winter, but not many. So as you say, if there is brood present it needs multiple treatments to get the mites as they come up out of the brood. The instructions with the Gas Vap recommend 4 treatments 4 days apart. Cheers Chris

The gas unit seems good for a few hives, 1 to 10 maybe. I would expect the gas to run out after a few hours. Then you have to buy another bottle. Not sure if this unit would pass H&S in NZ. Instant Vap, just recharge the battery and you should be able to burn our fingers battery.

Hi Stephen, I will work out how many hives a bottle of gas will do while I am using it. I predict it will be in the hundreds. I don't think there are any health and safety issues, it is no different to using gas for metal work and cooking. Yes, it is hot, but so are lots of things we use on a day to day basis. When I review it I will do a cost analysis compared to the Instant Vap, Purchase price and running costs.. But based on the limited use I have done so far, there would be nothing to stop it being used for hundreds of hives. The turn around time per hive is about 1 minute and reloading a new gas bottle would take about the same amount of time as putting a new battery in the instant vap, the difference being that you will get a lot more hives from a gas bottle than a battery. It will interesting to see how they stack up against each other. Cheers Chris.
