Stop trying to partner with your kids in parenting! In this episode, Ryan and Michael delve into the concept of authoritative parenting, challenging the idea of children masking their true selves due to ADHD. They explore the importance of pushing children out of their comfort zones and discuss practical strategies for effective parenting. How can parents model emotional regulation for their children?

I needed to hear this... we keep a low to no-sugar household and my son will often ask for soda and even when I say he shouldn't have it, he continues to ask and prod me to go get one. I realized as I was listening to this that I am not confidently just telling him no because I know it's not what's best for him. He was literally asking as I was listening to this and I used my mom voice and said "no. It's not good for you." He just walked away and came back later and gave me a hug and said he was sorry for bothering me about it." What?! I don't expect it to go that well every time, but that was amazing! I think I am going to look into integrating the outdoors into our homeschool more too.

Yes! If we are on the fence inside ourselves, or not confident or sure of what we are telling our kids, they feel that. Thanks for sharing!

Loved this entire talk. Parents are DYING for this kind of clarity and encouragement. Words cannot express how grateful I am. Every point in this video resonated with me and is accurate!

In just the week and a half since I found you both, I have learned so much! For the first time I can recall, my son stopped himself mid-insult to me and contained his emotions a bit. He was very proud of himself, I could see it all over his face🥰

Awesome podcast, guys! I will be sharing this with my parents at IEP meetings! Parents are extremely undereducated in executive function and need legitimate resources. It scares me how little parents know. Thank you for creating this podcast!

Isn’t a good idea to ask what your child actually enjoys doing eg: basketball instead of football instead of forcing them to do something they don’t enjoy doing?
@ADHDDude
@ADHDDude 14 дней назад
Sure, but there may be things they would enjoy yet haven't been exposed to yet. There may be things they have enjoyed but due to their difficulty with episodic memory they don't remember those experiences, and need an adult to help an adult make the connection. Kids with ADHD have a propensity to say "No" to anything new, unfamiliar or things they don't remember enjoying.

@@ADHDDudethank you. My son tends to say yes to most things and once he doesn’t like a small detail about the activity he wants to give up and it’s really hard to get him back into this activity😢

I only have availabily for coaching appointments with membership site members. You would have to reach out to GrowNow to ask if they do consultations, I don't want to speak for them. www.adhddude.com Thank you

What's your response to the many clinicians that state that masking is a poor choice for those with ADHD? Do you have a particular study you like to share that it is not inherently negative? Good listen today.
@ADHDDude
@ADHDDude 14 дней назад
I would ask them to show me research data on it, and the longitudinal effects of "masking", which is a term that's become a disempowering narrative.

Did you edit out the cringe video? I didn’t hear it. I think it’s important for us to hear as context for the comments you made afterwards.

Yes because RU-vid flagged it because it had music in the background
