How I wish this had been my first lesson on breathing. I was confused for years with bad advice until a teacher of mine finally thought me this. Could've saved me so much time...
Great lesson on appoggio breathing! You explained this difficult concept very well. It takes a great teacher to be able break down the feeling and explain it to others. Thank you for sharing!
Wow! I wish these videos were available when I first started voice lessons. It took me a while to sing with belly and rib expansion and eliminating collapse and tension. The concept of breath support was not explained to me this clearly. I was always told to use more support, and as you mentioned in this video, I thought this meant more air (and tension). I eventually learned proper breath support but it took a while to get there. This teaching series is great!
Thanks for your support, kkp! Justin's mission is to help singers overcome the unfortunate amount of conflicting information out there! So glad you found us!
No kidding. He is so handsome! And what a voice! Have you heard Justin's range and how different he can make his voice sound. Amazing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tnSSp3R9Wd8v.htmle
Thanks jonathon. I am a mature student of vocals. You explained the art of vocals+ arpoggio very well, im seeing some improvement in my voice control. Keep up the good work. You are gifted. Sheila
I think Justin is giving so much information that will actually let us learn the needed techniques. Unlike other videos that are hard and lacks detail in it. Some of them are just giving vague information that would not let us get the actual knowledge we are looking for. This is why I only come here. Thanks to New York Vocal Coaching for giving free to access lessons!
Leonardo DiCaprio pls help Harry Styles to learn a proper techniques for belting. he seems doesnt know diaphragm support and head voice. kinda feel pity for him during his live
Appoggio breathing looks as if you’re keeping your stomach and ribs expanded while you exhale; but the shiny solar plexus video looks like you intentionally “set” your exhale by engaging and drawing in the low belly or pelvic floor. How do I exhale Justin?!
Justin can you cover the rasp/vocal distortion? Because I think no one else here on yt who tries to exlain it really knows what's he/she talking about.
Gah. I can't believe you just share this freely. Just about every other vocal coach that has a RU-vid presence only shares incomplete bits of what they're talking about - starting at 30% of the lesson and ending at 70% - not for the sake of teaching you, but to bait you into purchasing their singing classes. NYVC is an absolute gem. Invaluable for those of us who lack the financial and/or mental capacity for in-person voice lessons.
Oh my god I can hit high notes with so much ease now. I was cracking but I realized it was because I was taking to much air. Like I could power my way into higher notes but it's the opposite. Sips of air. Like singing through a straw. Otherwise the voice cracks to protect itself. Thank you guys. These videos have been life changing. I'm finally finding the joy in my voice. It's like falling in love. I could cry.
Maybe I'm being fanatical but learning and applying all of this is a literal high. Like I'm in my 30s, went through theater training but could never figure out the voice. There was just so much tension. These videos are such a gift. Justin is the greatest teacher in the world. I'm so grateful to him and everyone at New York Vocal Coaching!
Wow Justin, you scared me to death with that notification "Ep 92 Final", please don't do that again hehehe, thanks a lot for this video about appoggio, I was just learning how to do it, and your video is gold, you read my mind!!! :D :D :D I hope you get to a million videos, we need you and thank you for all your great effort, passion and joy! God bless you!! You're awesome!! You're videos are so fun and educational. I'm always waiting for a new video. And in the meantime I watch and rewatch your other videos :D :D :D , I always come back to you!!. By the way I'm Abdel :D :D :D
This was the hardest thing for me to grasp in singing. The lean. It's not leaning forcefully, it's support that makes you lean in. You will it when you do. Two mechanisms cause this. Diaphragm breathing, and focusing on the baring down muscles. I didn't understand the second one, baring down. It's like doing squats but you focus on the "area" as you sing. It really is magical.
WAS VERY VERY NICE TO MEET YOU BRO!!
I'm starting to realise that every single on the NYVC videos are essential to all singers, and I'm gonna have to go through every one before i become a good singer XD Thanks again guys for another great video! Just as i think I've got the main aspects of singing in the bag, another is presented to me -;P
I am so GRATEFUL and THANKFUL for sharing this breathing technique...it has helped massively. Again thank you very much Justine----from the Philippines.
please continue making more videos Justin!! I really love your channel and your singing tips. You're one of the better vocal instructors on youtube and your videos have been really helpful :) would love to have more content from you
Hi Justin, everyone including the professionals tell me that I have a beautiful voice, but it needs to be worked, and they tell me I have to sing all the time, but the truth is that it makes Years that I sing and I do vocal exercises, so I do not understand what I miss! Help me please
You need a teacher. You need one on one and you cannot learn how to sing from you tube - no matter how wonderful the videos are. I have been through this myself. Finally got a good teacher on Skype and I am seeing the difference. Singing properly is not easy (for most of us) and its worth having lessons if you have some natural talent. The reason why you need a real teacher just for you is that you need someone to tell you what you are doing wrong, to be the ears because our own are unreliable. Also you need that someone because of the ambiguity of singing terminology and the fact that we cannot see inside our larynx and its hard to know what's going on. A well trained teacher, can hear what's going on and help you correct any bad habits. I will add that when I was doing a vocal course and working with videos, I saw no real improvement because I was doing something fundamentally wrong and I had no idea. Another thing is tension. There's a lot of talk about tension but most of it is not about where it really counts. That is in the larynx. A good vocal coach can hear the tension and make you become aware of it and how to let it go. I do Skype lessons myself and although its not as ideal as having a real life teacher, if the Skype teacher is good, then that's the main thing. Find some money and get some half hour lessons. Also get a keyboard and learn the basics at the very least. I've now started to learn piano though because I'm frustrated with not being able to sing along easily with backing tracks etc. But its all good. Learning music is very satisfying, especially I think if you have some natural talent.
Justin!!! Please T___T I finally made it here from episode 1. I hope you continue with this series. It is literally the best, most resourceful and educational signing lesson video series I have found on RU-vid. You've helped me so much!
9:14 you mean with "don't squeeze your cords" not pushing them together with excessive pressure right? After all you hold the breath by closing your vocal cords
This is how my first singing teacher - a retired opera singer - taught me as a child; and how no other teacher taught me since. I thought I was unlearning bad habits all through music school :S
hey!I am a beginner.everyone appreciates me on my singing but when I voice record myself on my android I sound totally different and insane.is this same for everyone 😁😁
""BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO YOU"' - This is exactly what I needed!!! Your explanations made it so easy to understand the importance of proper breathing as I suffer from a lot of tension in my throat area when I sing. I've only been singing for one year with a singing school and I will definitely be using the Farinelli method and Appoggio to keep improving in technique. Thankyou so much. Great work. You've just gained a new subscriber : )
Thank you so much for this Justin! For some reason, whenever I sing high notes, my neck constricts itself, and you can see a sort of bend inwards in the center of my neck when I sing higher notes. Not to mention, this sort of lump forms right below my chin. I notice that when professional singers sing live, I see that their neck remains completely still and you only see the veins pop out at their neck sides. Do you have any videos about how I can deal with this problem?
Great Justin. This is the first time I hear what I have been saying for a long time to my students, that support is precisely the resistance to the natural movement of the diaphragm. Did I understand correctly? I love your tutorials, clear, precise and highly documented. My best wishes... from Barcelona
Yeah I think that's what he said. but another way to say it is to slow down the release of air and to keep the torso as it is when inhaling - which does slow down the rising of the diaphragm apparently. And its the first time I've heard that too. So its great to finally get clarity on that point. Once - only once when doing some breathing exercises, I actually felt something very weird in my diaphragm. It was like my body took over the resistance and I didn't have to control it. It was pretty good. But I am not certain if that's what is supposed to happen. I would like clarity on that myself.
Why do my ears pop when I sing? I don't have any tension. And I have vibration in my ear when I sing as well. Please help Some say eustachian tube in your ear is balancing the pressure inside with the outside But I just don't know I went to the doctor and he doesn't understand why my ear only pops when I sing either
I can do it! actually since I was younger I do it already. .. some teach me to sing with a breathing through belly only but I often use the diaphragm breathing and sometimes doing it both. .. yes it could help you sustain notes that are 6 or 8 counts...
Hi! i just want to ask, as I exhale and start to sing phrases, should my belly and ribs go in gradually or keep them as they were when i inhaled? Thank you!
So i originally for a couple days inhaled through my mouth and exhaled through my mouth and could feel my ribs closing in, but when i inhaled through my nose and exhaled through my mouth I could feel them stay in place. Is the inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth thing correct? It works for me but if its wrong well obv i wanna fix that
Hello Justin, Thank you very much for this useful appoggio breathing, but Do you have a video using apoggio in actual singing. I still don’t know how to apply it as I sing. Do you offer online singing lessons?
Sorry but how can i take a deep and free breath again if my ribs are already expanded , i mean after trying to exhale or sing with expanded ribs and not letting them come at the same position how can i take deep breath again with already expanded ribs, thanks
Your knowledge is out of this world. It took me thirty years of studying and experimenting with my voice in order to produce a relatively good sound and basically there are about a million things I don't know. Thank you for sharing your immense knowledge with us .
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching I'm so glad young singers have now the chance to learn from you. You help them bring their dreams to life. I live in Greece and I wish I could have when I was a student such knowledge at my disposal. Unfortunately when I was trying to learn there were so many contradicting views on the subject of singing that it was impossible for me to build a proper technique. Finally with your valuable assistance I can even now put all those different terms in proper perspective. Thank you so much . By the way all your presentations are fun and lively. A real pleasure to watch . Thank you , thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravoooooooooooo I HAVE LISTEN JUST HALF OF YOUR VIDEO BUT I WANT TO SAY this RIGHT NOW. I AM AN OPERA SINGER AND I MUST SAY OUT LOUD BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. WHOEVER SAYS SOMETHING AGAINST THIS VIDEO IS WRONG.. TOTALY WRONG. BECOUSE EVERYTHING YIU SAY IS TOTALLY RIGHT... ESPECIALLY FOR OPERA!!! BRAVOOOOOO
Oh WOW the difference in my singing just after doing this exercise... incredible. I knew I was struggling with breath support technique but I didn't know what to do about it. I will be doing this exercise DAILY!
I like the Farinelli, tried it and sh'd for 50, thats opera singing for 30 years, I have taught this technique, in a similar way but call it the hissing exercise and do it on c, as in sea,
I should have watched this years ago. This was my problem, everything pointed out in this. Time to record this fucking album now that I can actually hit the notes I wrote without my throat closing in a few seconds haha.
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching yeah it was wild. I literally just did the exercise and then tried singing to my favorite songs and I could hit the notes for a good 30+ minutes rather than failing the first few notes with throat pain. I got very light headed. Thanks so much
Hi, great video! Question for ya: Should I be inhaling through my nose or my mouth, or both, for the Farrinelli exercise? Also am I supposed to exhale all of my air when I'm doing the breathing out portion? Is it ok if I still have some air left? Thank you!
Hey there! The nose is ideal! Check out this video for more info: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IS3UO5NZKcs.html And no, you don't need to breathe out all the air! :) -NYVC
Question: on the Farinelli, when you are exhaling, as it begins with exhale shh for 5 counts, we're not exhaling ALL of the breath at that point right? .. But then it goes right into inhaling again .. So.. that's my question; i got confused - Thinking surely if we're not inhaling fresh air on top of not fully exhaled air, then it must be that we are meant to flush out all the air on that "shhhh" exhale each time. Is that right? ❓
