#TheElectricPlayground #E3 #Starfox64
The Electric Playground begins! It's September 1997 and a brand new series built to take viewers behind the scenes of the video game industry launches. The first episode is a showcase of the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3). During EP's first segment, Tommy Tallarico, Victor Lucas and Kelly Benson catch up with some of the acclaimed game creators in attendance. Be on the lookout for quick chats with:
- Peter Molyneux (Bullfrog Productions)
- Steve Race (PlayStation)
- George "The Fat Man" Sanger (The 7th Guest)
- Doug TenNapel (The Neverhood)
- Michael P. Hadwin (Ritual Entertainment)
- Jason Rubin (Naughty Dog)
- Carolyn Rauch (IDSA)
- Fergus McGovern (Probe Entertainment)
- Bruce Willis (Apocalypse)
- Barrett Alexander (id Software)
After our quick trip through E3's past and present (1995-1997), EP stops at Nintendo's E3 '97 booth for a conversation with legendary game maker, Shigeru Miyamoto.
Following our stops at E3, EP hits the road to Bothell, Washington to meet up with acclaimed adventure game maker, Ron Gilbert, who welcomes us is for a visit with Cavedog Entertainment and an interview with the creator of the hit RTS, Total Annihilation, Chris Taylor. Composer, Jeremy Soulé also tells us about creating the music for the game.
After the break, EP kicks into high adventure mode. Tommy visits Namco to chat with Mike Fischer about three new PlayStation games; the aerial dogfights of Ace Combat 2; the undersea action of Treasures of the Deep; and the dangerous thrills of Time Crisis.
Also, back at E3, Tommy chats with José Villeta from Black Ops about creating Treasures of the Deep.
When EP picks up after a short break, Heat.Net's "The Reverend," has a list of some great PC games to check out.
And in our Question of the Week segment, Ion Storm's John Romero is asked if he has a hero in the video game industry.
In our first Reviews on the Run segment, Tommy and Vic review:
Ace Combat 2 for the PlayStation
Starfox 64 for the Nintendo 64
Star Wars: X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter for the PC
Manx TT for the SEGA Saturn
The Electric Playground episodes are digitized and upscaled by the University of Toronto Mississauga Library. The wider EP Media Ltd. archive is located at the Library where it is preserved and digitized for long term access. I am astonished at how well this program holds up. It's a time capsule. It's authentic. It's fun. It's informative. I always loved this show, but I don't think I realized how special it would be all these years later.

How the industry has changed in the last 27 years, E3 is now a relic of the past, and the media landscape has changed so much. What a nostalgia trip. Thank you for this Victor, please don't stop!
@Digimess88

I had to pause at certain points just to take in the atmosphere and design of the showroom floor. It looked like an adult version of some indoor playground and looks like they really went all-out back then. The more digital we get, especially as we get closer to AR and VR being normalized, the more boring and less immersive physical architecture gets. I wanna go back to this e3 where it looks like you could turn around any corner and be met with a surprise. I also love rewatching old techtv/g4/ep/etc (which is weird if you think about it, just because the tech is dated), but honestly I just miss hearing people excited about tech and games. It's the whole vibe that I miss
@darkl3ad3r
@darkl3ad3r 5 месяцев назад
@@Digimess88took the words right out of my mouth, man. I guess you were born in 1988? I was 1987 so that would explain why we both feel the same way about it. The world has changed far too much far too fast. It's difficult to think of another period of time where there were such massive changes in just one generation. I wish I could back so bad. I'm just grateful for the work Victor and Tommy did back then to give us such amazing memories.
@Digimess88
@Digimess88 5 месяцев назад
@@darkl3ad3r 88, yep! and yea we're not alone. Also, I think the younger gen will have something similar happen. I think it will happen more rapidly as tech progresses faster. I can only try and honor those times by being as optimistic now as I was then and not let the fire go out in confusion and despair. I'm also grateful Victor and EPN is still around. Have a good one, man!

Oh, man, it's Tommy! But also, this is a really quality rip of the master tape. Although weird why it's 1080p60 if the source video seems to be 29.97 FPS, was it actually mastered like that or is it due to the deinterlacing? Surprisingly many cameras working at 480i recorded full on 60 FPS.

Man.. why does E3 97 looks so much funner and better than what is became? I'm sad that E3 is no more, many factors led to it's demise. Cost, making it too corporate and of course covid. Now we have large developers hosting their own live youtube events, but it;s missing the all in 'one building', innovating and competitive atmosphere.
