I'm back on the 1990 Jeep XJ 4.0 Restoration and its time to test drive it and see if the transmission is all in order. I'm also going to clean it and pull out off of the interior and assess the corrosion on the floor pans. This episode will decide my next move on the Jeep.

Hey Mike. You may not recall but a few years back I messaged you about tires and you replied. I was new to all things Jeep Xj ( and vehicle in general hahaha). I want you to know that your reply is what made me stick with my project 98 xj. That jeep now sits regeared, lifted, tuned and has become my daily driver. Recently purchased a 2000 2door xj and it is currently ripped down to the skeleton like your 2nd jeep is. I look forward to following with you in our builds. From the bottom of my heart, all the way over here in IL United States, thank you for giving me your time and replying to my tire question.

@WorkshoptoWilderness so far I've put an 8 inch iro lift kit on it and nee headlights. I've also welded in new floor panels and rhinolinerd the floor. I also put in a new power steering pump and headlights. Next is SYE kit and driveshafts, as well as steering. What steering do you use or is it custom?

Just bought a 90 Cherokee project a few weeks ago. I have a tip for burping the cooling system. Jack up the rear about a foot or so and remove the coolant temp sensor at the rear of the intake manifold. It worked well for me. Its nice to see you tackle the same issues I am running into. Cheers!

Five or six years ago, I did this to my 96. It was a great opportunity to replace a couple of small areas of sheet metal on the floor and apply sound deadening

Thanks! Sometimes I feel like a sucker for punishment, but good project always seems to motivates me. Some new parts just arrived for this old XJ, I cant wait to get it back together and working well.

I had the same transmission issue on my 88 4.0L XJ, it was stuck on 3rd gear and I had to shift manually the speeds with 1-2 and 3 position. I changed the transmission computer unit located on the passenger side and that was working. You should check your Throttle Position Sensor and your transmission fuse before the TCU. Hi Guys, I had the same Problem on my 91 XJ that I just restored. The Problem was the disconnected connection to the transmission control module. It is located in the knee part of the dashboard on the right side under the glovebox. If it is connected, there might be a broken wire or so in this peace of the harness.

I haven’t replaced that part of the dash that the transmission controller is mounted to yet. 😂. I’ll plug that in today and give it a go. I’m sure your correct and I’m sure you saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you so much.

To be honest I am extremely jealous of that roof. I can't believe it's in such good condition! The rest of it aint too bad either. I had to replace the entire floor in mine with new metal, that was a hell of a job I don't wish to repeat. 3 years later I still have a similar size pile of Jeep bits to you, but all in my loft. All the best dude, looking wicked so far!

I couldn't believe it myself. My diesel had a lot of work to do on the drip rails. It was terrible work. I cant imagine doing a whole roof, that must have been a huge job. Thanks for watching

Recently bought a Jeep XJ, and it needs a lot of work for the shape it's in, seeing yours be so similar in shape to mine makes me a lot more confident about getting mine to look as tip-top as your diesel one, hope to update this comment in the future once I have it looking top notch. :)

Get the trans filter kit that comes with the new solenoids. That fixed my gear shifting problem

Not sure if the phase 1 has the transmission to throttle body cable tension adjuster that looks like a little tip. On phase 2 AW4 its a press button reset that makes it retract then kick throttle pedal to floor so it drags the cable out and clicks tensioner tip to new position. I'm also a big fan of adding Lucas Transmission Fix as a way of adjusting that viscosity and protecting the AW4 from heat. Obviously still do the filter and fluid like you say but note sadly not all the fluid comes out in a change (of the full 8 litre capacity - circa 4 litres pan off, circa 2.5 litres by drain plug) unless you want to feed it fluid while running and run the return line into a bucket which could be fun to watch. Really enjoying this, keep it coming.

I have a bit of an issue with your videos mate , they are too damn short, absolutely loving this new restoration on a beautiful vehicle. Hopefully when it’s done you could put together a full length doco dedicated just to this jeep. Nice! I just got an XJ that I am working on. Header was cracked in five places. It's a 4.0. Lambda was going nuts. Now it works after some Tig welding. I think there should be a flex pipe after the first O2 sensor. Next up is changing the push rods and rocker arms. Got a kit with all the parts except the lifters. Fuel pump from Delphi is also being swapped due to I don't trust a pump with 250000kms. Good luck with your Jeep! Best wishes from northern Stockholm.

Hey Mike, the XJ is looking good! Did you tell Meg that now that you have all the extraneous pieces out of the interior, it is done and ready for her to drive? Ha! Looks like a ton of work to do on the body, but I love your attention to detail. I am sure the end result will be something to be proud of. Also, the diesel looks all cleaned up from your latest trip--hope it doesn't mind being set aside for awhile as you focus on the XJ project. Thanks for bringing us along on this latest project. Should be a fun one (at least from the subscriber's point of view!).

Great video, as ever, thank you for taking the time to make it. I take my hat off to you, I don't think I would dare take all that trim out, would be petrified about remembering how to refit it and losing fixings. Engine bay looks amazing already, I love the contrast at about 2 minutes with the built XJ leaving the garage and the stock one pulling in, looking tiny in comparison.

Its interesting that many of the XJ trim panels seem to be metal and screwed on, whereas I had a WJ and lots of that was plastic trim with clips - which mostly broke. Watching with interest Mike!

I bought a 1990 4 dr. Laredo new back then. I had no idea it would be the last of the RENIX Jeeps. I have a 1989 2 dr. Limited now. Good luck with your project. It looks like a fun one!

I envy you with those floor pans! My 2001 was an old forestry jeep and it was completely rotted out. Needed to do a complete floor pan for the passenger compartment. strangely though my rear was in great shape. Greeting from Florida!

Thanks for another great video 👍👍. I ditched the carpet out of mine and will bed liner the inside with cuick releas drain plugs for cleaning. Yes when i pulled my carpet out no drivers floor all the way past the the driver seat forward mounts🤣😢 . Lucky frame was rails survived. Both 4 liters had in America would eat the flywheel sensor as well ignition pickup modules, so always had a spare but in states was a parts store on every corner😂. Mine were both manual so no advice on the auto.

Hello Mike, very happy to have found you again! I've always wondered what happened to you and your family and now I know. I also subscribed to this channel even if I don't know the first thing about engines and rust repair but it is all very interesting. I'm watching all your episodes and while I'm shocked by the ambiguous language it is nothing a lot of praying and a few days of rest in a darkened room can't fix. I hope this doesn't harm my mental health in the long run. ATB from Flanders!

When you go to fire that gasser jeep up, cycle the key twice to prime the fuel pump, it will start quicker, and the pump will last longer

Mike, I own two 4.0 xj's and a diesel. Check the water pump on your 4.0. Some have plastic impellers and the can crack losing fins and reducing cooling. My Jeep idles much cooler than yours. Also the engine driven fan clutch becomes in effective. Jack

the only issue with doing it up is.. now you need 2 more spare parts jeeps to keep the two nice ones going. and then you will end up rebuilding them ones and then need 4 more spare parts jeeps.. this is how it happens and spreads

Mike, the jeep is lots more solid than I originally thought. I ran honeycomb wheels like yours on my 93. I never liked them as they like to hold dirt and they are much harder to clean than other types. The 1990's trannies should be good to go. The color of the fluid will tell you plenty. 😄 yeah that poor knife. It was one of my favourite scandi blade shapes in my used collection. Lent it to a guy on a course and he snapped about 7mm off the end...

If it was me I would throw all the carpet and headlining in the trash and go with sound deadening and rubber mats.

Well that's what I did in my Diesel and I haven't looked back. Its tempting, easier to clean, waterproof and better for sound deadening.

Agreed. Frankly I can't understand why any vehicle needs carpets. They are magnets for moisture, mud and a million bits of grass. It's not like people take off their boots before climbing into a car...@@WorkshoptoWilderness

@@Ijusthopeitsquick Yeah I agree, vibration dampening mats, foam and those bucket mats are just so easier to clean. I think people are use to carpeting things although its impossible to clean.

Its not strange to be honest. I drove a lhd zj for a couple of years and we have a little nissan that's lhd. I prefer being in the right seat though 😄
