Hey Gav, have you thought about a set of Emu Wing gull wing hatches for rear access? Allows you to get into the rear cargo area without having to open both wheel carriers and tailgate.... www.emuwing.com.au/products/200-series-land-cruiser/

Spot on about the ARB compressor I’ve had one for 14 or 15 years it’s in a small grey plastic toolbox. Amazing kit

You sound like you modified your rig bit by bit. That's how I did my FJ. I started out replacing my tires to Nitto Trail Grappler MT/s and replacing the weak rear links. After that it was armor, as I was doing a lot of rocky trails in and around North and West Texas. I would love to see more info about your radio set up, I need to upgrade to better comm's from what I currently have. Your tires sound a lot like mine. I just went from Mud Tires to a hybrid AT/MT. I went with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers from the Trail Grapplers. They are like night & day on the pavement, but so far they have performed well on everything I've thrown at them. About a month ago I met some folks out at an old rock quarry and ran a variety of trails. The main difference between the old and new tires were that the new ones felt more "springy" or bouncy when aired down to 16psi. My old tires felt a little stiffer aired down.

I share your pain on choosing a bad tire - I went with BFG "Rugged Terrain" on an F150 4x4 (I do a lot of offroading as well), and I had 3 punctures in about 1000 miles, I got the tire company to replace them with BFG A/Ts and was pretty satisfied with those, but got rid of the truck shortly thereafter. I now run Goodyear Duratracs on my Xterra, and I've got about 60k miles on them and they're due for a change. Awesome tire in all conditions, including snow and ice on the road.

Em u I think with the amount of 4wding I do and the weight of my vehicle I was asking to much of All Terrain tyres. Perhaps I would have had the same results regardless of brand. But it was a stark difference from almost never getting a puncture to getting one a month.

How do advise an expert on what mods to do , what you've done so far is well proven and i can't add to that , Yes tyres make or break a 4WD and you've got that well covered , looking forward to the Kimberly and the rest of your review of the Cruiser :-)

Hi Gavin firstly got to say I thoroughly enjoy your videos they are very informative. Just curious about your air box, have you had the usual dusting issues that many other cruiser drivers have had and if so are you planning on upgrading? I have been working up in the Pilbara for over 10 years and have seen the direct impacts that bull dust has on vehicles. Keep up the great work on vids.
@GavinGillett
@GavinGillett 5 лет назад
I sure have, I've fixed it to a degree but definitely want to upgrade the airbox. A mate of mine that runs Midland 4wd Center did to things that stopped the leaking. A little grease around the top seal and a small amount of rubber under the latches to add extra pressure. Works a treat until i upgrade. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you like the videos :)

Robert Santry so far they're exceeding expectations but the true test will be the next 3 months when I take them down the 5 most remote tracks in Australia and another 10 tracks that would test any tyre

what's the highest tyre size one can opt for in a LC200 before you need to modify/cut inside the wheel well for additional space in order to accommodate a larger tyre???
@GavinGillett
@GavinGillett 5 лет назад
That depends a lot on suspension setup but in General 33"-34" is the maximum before body mount chop

Great video once again.Where currently building our new sahara, what brand fuel manager are using? Is it pre or post factory filter. And are you using the provent 200 for the catch can?
@GavinGillett
@GavinGillett 6 лет назад
Renae Hobbs Hi Renae, it is a provent 200 catch can. If possible get them to plumb the return line into the sump. I cant remember the pre fuel filter brand but have a look in the gear section of my website at www.summitx.net it should be there. Glad you're enjoying the series.

Hey Gav, Firstly FANTASTIC videos! Love it. Just wondering how you find the TJM Overland Bar!?
@GavinGillett
@GavinGillett 5 лет назад
Hi Ben, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I love the TJM bar but I think the newer versions of TJM and ARB bars would be better now. This bar was the first to have larger tubing and reinforcing around the winch component. We used to reinforce these ourselves but now days its standard. Thanks for reaching out :)

I've noticed that whereas in S. Africa, we prefer for our vehicles to be either white or light sand in colour, you like most Aussie overlanders (that I've seen anyway) seem to go for dark colours (dark grey, charcoal or even black). Am I mistaken and is it just by coincidence, or by actual choice? Not important, just wondering.
@GavinGillett
@GavinGillett 6 лет назад
Jimbob Jones for me its about having a diffrent colour everytime I buy a new vehicle. I am fast running out of colours to choose from and I'm down to shades now. My next 4x4 is almost guaranteed to be white and then I have to start again from the beginning of the spectrum. My choice of charcoal being the Aussie 4wd colour in my case is coincidental :)
@MOOSEDOWNUNDER
@MOOSEDOWNUNDER 6 лет назад

1) You won't kill an ARB air compressor. They last forever. 2) The most important thing any vehicle can have is an air compressor and puncture repair kit. After that it's a bulbar. 3) I have an ARB Speedy Seal puncture plugging kit in my work truck and it took 5 years to use 50 plugs - on other vehicles tyres. 4) The most common puncture repair I do for visitors is in BF Goodrich, Mickey Thompson, Coopers, Dunlop and any radial that most 4wdrivers fit. I can't differentiate between them. They all get staked and punctured as easily as each other. They are all flimsy and like a balloon. 5) It's true some radials are a little stronger than others but mostly they are all the same. There are a few notable exceptions when it comes to tough radials such as the Ohtsu Falken 10 Ply RATED radial Light Truck. Steel belted and made in Japan. Other tough-carcass LT radial tyres are out there but here's the problem : Tyre retailers want to sell tyres. They want you to come back. They are going to sell you "the tyre everyone uses" which is mediocre and easily staked. More stakes equals more sales. 6) And the same retailers will refuse to tell you another secret too : That there is an Australian Standard for tyre repairs and vulcanising. You know that tyre that the dealer said was no good because of the big stake ? Well it could have been repaired. But they don't want to send them away and save you money, they want to sell you another flimsy balloon. 7) My advice is to purchase a LT Radial with a closed in tread with a HWY pattern. It's very hard to push a stake through tread and a tough carcass. Open block tread patterns are a magnet for stakes as are those ridiculous side-biter tyres which beg to be holed. 8) When considering new tyres, have a good feel of the tyre off the rim first. You can easily feel how thick the side wall is. If it's an inch thick and stiff as hell then it's a good stake resistant tyre. If it's 6mm thick and flimsy like a pan cake then expect lots of stakes. 9) People fall for advertising. People are lazy - they copy and paste. They copy their mates. They buy what the dealer sells them without question and without research. 10) The tyre industry is there to sell tyres. They're hardly likely to sell you a tyre that won't come back, are they ?? if you believe the marketing hype then all I can say is caveat emptor. Every 4wd magazine and person sponsored by a tyre company says the same old thing, to wit, "The first thing you need to do is buy a set of tyres". Well of course the tyre companies want to make a sale, they're not a charity. But the truth is that good suspension, experience and maybe a Robert's diff lock will take you further than any tyre with any given tread. (I can hear the knives being sharpened). If you want stake and puncture resistance then research the issue instead of believing what everyone repeats. NB : The tyre dealers CAN get you tough radials if you demand it - otherwise they'll sell you marketed mainstream balloon tyres which result in more sales. 11) Toyo, Bridgstone, MRF, Silverstone, Ohtsu Falken, Michelin and others make wonderful tyres which suit serious over-landing where reliability, safety, longevity and strength are required / desired. 12) To iterate, The tyre you want is a Light Truck, Hopefully 10 ply rated, steel belted, has a closed in hwy pattern tread and has a very thick stiff sidewall. And as tall as possible within specification limits.

Ade Larsen hate to point out the obvious but all this tyres i meantioned are 10ply LT with the exception of the ATs.
@adelarsen9776
@adelarsen9776 6 лет назад
That's interesting. The tyres I see shredded to pieces and which fail the most spectacularly are BFG, MT and Coopers. I don't associate mud terrain with a stronger carcass, often the reverse. But I take on board what you say and will remember it. Thank you. Interesting to learn new things. Cheers.

my opinion all terrains are nothing but a radial application tire meant for tarmac and unsealed roads that are maintained to a level of use... I would stick with the mud terrain class if I was going to play offroad and playing about with and in pilbra and other off road and un maintained tracks of WA, NT, Qld, NSW, Vic and SA.. The only other thing I recommend is carry a min of 4-6 spare tires.. and full exoskeleton roll cage as if or when you do roll over you have the option to right yourself unless you own a mid 80's toyota you will not have a safety jacking point, when they start replacing steel with aluminum bodies they removed the body strength from the chassis as for regulations nobody thinks beyond stupidity when they enact the stupid laws with very little consults of the locals and so forth.. yup I think the bigger issue with lights is using them in the cities and towns due to poor street lighting .. and the last thing a 7.62 rifle is a must whether you hit or find something injured you must dispatch its life...

I got you now. After a bad experience in the past I no longer run water tanks. I prefer the 24 packs of 600ml water bottles. In the event of a severe accident you wont loose all your water, in fact you probably wont lose any. When your finished they crush down to the size of a coaster and you can fit hundreds into a rear trashbag. I managed to fit all my trash plus 48 empty bottles of water on my CSR trip :D
