This trip has been months in planning! The anticipation and nervousness to just get going was brutal! But with the vehicles ready to rock and roll, all that was left now was to find out about the border crossings from Johan Groenewald (Tracks4Africa) and then go and get those pesky tests done so we could happily cross the border. But things didnt go to plan, my dads results didnt come through in time; but we pressed on anyways. Hopefully the results would arrive before we got to the border. We would cross the Northwest, and enter the Northerncape where we'd be camping at the Kalahari Monate campsite for the night as a stop over to the border. Our nerves now settling, all that was left to do was have a good nights rest and then cross the border the next morning! After Making our way through the Nakop/Ariamsvlei border, finding some fresh meat and vegetables was our priority before making our way to the Hobas Campsite at the Fish River Canyon; where we just had to have sundowners at the largest canyon in africa while the sunset over the horizon!

I think what sets Southern African overlanding apart, is that camp cooking is part of the adventure. Not a frozen dinner, microwave or pie oven in sight!

Which do you rate as better? the Fox or Terrain Tamer Suspension ?
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 года назад
The Terrain Tamer was incredible on this trip and It really impressed me! The smart coils and parabolics really change the dynamic of the vehicle is such a great way. I do think the Pro shocks from Terrain Tamer on this setup would be INSANELY good, but the HD shocks definitely hold their own out there in even the toughest conditions we hit.

What is the Garmin device on the right? A Garmin GPS? You already have the Garmin Overlander. . . Also, why do you feel it's necessary to mount the Garmin InReach Mini to the windshield? What are you using it for besides possibly a daily message/emergency call?
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 года назад
I put it there so it can get good satellite connection; I also pull weather updates and track the whole trip on it, plus it runs the map share that we send home for the family and insurance so they can see where we are all the time without us contacting them.

@RoamOverlanding

Thanks George; I use a combination of a Canon C100 MK2 and canon 90D (mainly pictures). I didn’t see much lion lager there; mainly their local beers are really cheap like Hansa and Windhoek Draughty; the SAB beers are quite pricey there

Is it a safety thing that you stay in campsites instead of wild camping? If so because of people or animals? Just curious coming from the U.S. seems different to be in all these amazing places and then stay in a site.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 2 года назад
There is a whole tourism network built around camping and overlanding across Namibia; these communities mainly earn any income through tourism. So staying in a site where you have ablutions and facilities is nice for most of the night camping. Plus it supports the local industry. Bare in mind here we are not that far into the middle of nowhere out here; in Namibia you can have everything from near complete isolation to nice comfortable camping; and 5 star extreme luxury lodges. We will be visiting campsites that are a-bit more remote but generally they are still managed by someone at some level. A beautiful spot to pitch your tent is a beautiful spot 😂

Adrian, question about Fish river canyon, Im in the middle of planning my trip for March next year, and the canyon is my planned first night stop. Thank you, As there is no phone coverage how does the Garmin navigate by connecting to satellite ? What worries me is to get lost and run out of fuel. To listen to locals explaining the way is in my experience a last resort especially when low on fuel. I have a petrol single cab land cruiser overlander , plan to fill up in Ruacana tank capacity 220 L plus extra 40 L ,the route roughly Ruacana, Epupa all along 4x4 track next to the river then to Onkwangati then van Zyl, rooidrom, Orupembe ,Puros,Sesfontein filling up at Palmwag. Not trusting fuel at Puros,Sesfontein, Orupempe or Onkanwati
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Год назад
Sounds like you have a good plan; Garmin GPS works without cellphone coverage. It uses the satellites so you get full connection and signal anywhere for your navigation. The InReach Messaging works the same way, you can contact home or help if you need to from anywhere in the world regardless of cellphone reception.

I studied the gps you suggested which i agree is a good option , however have an old bgan modem which a friend gave me but after a visit to Radiotronix in Walfishbay Christo told me its useless because the cheapest data package is Nad 3000 and it last for 1 month it looks like an Iridium phone is best the data package lasts for a year otherwise renting a satphone for 500 a week plus data if used. I already bought a Garmin smartdrive 76 at Johan Tyre in Cape Town . So its between renting a phone buying a Iridium for 20 k or buying a Tread Overland for about 27 k
