Fabulous cycle ride from Blandford and love the fact that you can stop at Shillingstone station for tea and cake. The Arial view from your drone shows off the line and the landscape beautifully.
This is a fabulous bewitching film with prefect music. I have never seen the old trackbed from the air and the gorgeous countryside through the Blackmore Vale. I am not entirely unfamiliar with the railway, however, having travelled as a child on the Pines Express from Manchester for Bournemouth holidays. I also cycle the Bath part of the railway to Radstock every summer whilst on holiday but apart from the Sturminster to Shiilingstone trailway, I have never got round to exploring the rest. It is clearly more beautiful than any other part of the route and I remember it in snatches from the age of 6 onwards,, particularly the Stour. Shillingstone station in particular has changed a lot from a few years back when I visited. The film brings back glorious and unforgettable memories. Many thanks. You have made my day.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I thought that there would be nothing you could tell me about the country where I live. Never assume! The beauty does indeed shine through as you say. As an aside, I've been playing spot the swimming pool in the footage at the end as it's where my family lives.
Thank you so much for filming this. Beautiful. I grew up here and knew the line well. As you cross the medows from Blandford at about 4mins the farm on the left is France Farm. Almost all the track bed is still there, except at Gains Cross where the cutting is filled in. May be one day Blandford and Sturminster will be joined ? You have made an old man VERY happy.
Thanks Ian, pleased you're enjoying them! In parallel to this series, I've been working on the Southampton & Dorchester Railway as well, for a future series.
When I was in the Lifeboys in Winton , Bournemouth, our group met up with other troops from round the region at Shillingstone. We went by train from Bournemouth West. I have, regretfully, I have never been on the rest of the line to Bath. My late mother did part of her hairdressing training at Midsomernorton, just before WW II, and travelled on the line many times from her home town of Ringwood. Now living 18,821 km from that area!
Love the walk into Shillingstone Station last done about 10 years ago. Many happy memories of this and searching for the old Castleman track. Thank you.
Great set of videos. I used to be a Train driver in England and worked with some old S&D staff. Now driving trains in New Zealand. I used to live just outside Wimborne. Great work🍻🍻🇳🇿
Very nice set of vids mate. Watching this in Ireland. Sad to watch. I did not even realise I drove down through Blackmoore Vale a good few times on the way to Holidays in Swanage!!. I did call into Shillingtone though for a look!
@@RailFlicks I did notice a little later on, though couldn't be bothered to go and alter my comment. ;) I just ended up getting confuzzled about which directions we were being taken and enjoyed the scenery instead. Just like the old M&SWJ, closing the S&D was criminal, especially when you hear the truth of the shenanigans that were deliberately perpetrated. :(
Thanks for your support. The next section is 'in the can' awaiting editing. Unfortunately this has had to take a temporary back seat while I sort out a family crisis, but I do intend to extend the series as soon as I am able.
Is this one going to be EP6, Shillingstone to Sturminster Newton and Stalbridge towards Templecombe? I have watched with enormous interest EP1 to EP4 and would love to see drone footage of the line north.
