Roof Renovation Part 2
What a whirlwind of a week up on the roof! Our fantastic roofer team has been hard at work, and thanks to their GoPro skills, we’ve got some awesome footage to share with you. These guys are absolute machines-it’s been non-stop action from dawn till dusk.
The first task was removing the old canal tiles. The team carefully sorted through the lot, but sadly, about 30% were too damaged to save and had to make the journey to the tip (or the "dechetterie" as the French call it). Once the tiles were cleared, the next crucial step was laying down the waterproof lining-what we’d call sarking back in Australia.
With the sarking in place, the focus shifted to installing the wooden battens. The roofers are creating a sturdy horizontal and vertical trellis system to support the new canal tiles. These new tiles are arriving next week so it will be incredible to see them go up on the roof.
These new tiles come with special supports underneath that will lock into metal clips on the battens, ensuring everything stays securely in place-hopefully for the next 50 years!
To keep that classic, ancient look, the new tiles will be laid as the base layer (the unders or underlings), while the old tiles will go on top (the overs or overlings). It’s a brilliant way to blend the best of both worlds-modern durability with timeless charm.
