Ep5: AEC Routemaster London Bus Restoration - Internal Strip Out! 

I remember being fascinated by the RM's when they were introduced on my local route, the 22 in Clapton. And that wonderful smell of what was apparently Rexine, unforgettable.

Great to see the update. To have one buses in your fleet with a sound system is a go idea for your business.

As a Motorcoach Driver I say keep the PA system it is indispensable for charters and guided bus tour work.

I'd say leave the pa system in, it doesn't seem too intrusive and I think you might regret taking it out when you have to tell clients that you don't have it too many times in the future!

Definitely keep the PA...... if LT had started using the RM's for more private hire work they may well have had such a system fitted !!

Full of eager anticipation it’s good to see part 5 👍. I’d be in the same quandary as yourself regarding the PA but ultimately it’s not impacting on the real fabric of the vehicle, it’s been done as discretely as is realistically possible and considering the work RM1214 will do that ultimately secures its future then ticking another box for the paying customer is a small price to pay. After all if we were being the ultimate purist the RM would never have left London let alone be on wedding hire in the Welsh borders. I personally would be happy to keep the PA in the vehicles current role. Look forward to seeing work progress and the finished results. Nice RM’s are nice and I’m most privileged to drive a really nice one in the shape of RM 378. Feel free to search here on RU-vid and enjoy some vids from others who have uploaded clips of RM 378 in action. Keep the vids coming, really enjoy them.

I know it's not the same but up here in the West coast of Scotland I regularly travelled on Bristol Lodekkas which are just as hard to find now as an RM. It's funny how the interior layout is so similar...... must have been good. Anyway, love the videos, Thank you for posting.

Taking the waist mouldings and bulkhead handrails off would have made the job easier David They will have the same old rexine on them and will presumably need to be recovered. Rexine was only ICI's brand name for leathercloth, so you might get the smell back!! I loved the smell of repainted RMLs when they came out of the drying ovens at Aldenham came from the moquette as well

Personally I’d leave the p.a it’s an addition if the vehicle is used for events that require music, it’s not exactly in your face and I doubt the “bus police” will care if it’s not original! Anything that adds to its marketing ability is a bonus I’d have thought.

I noticed something in that video that made me realise why the bus was in such a state. So sad. But she's well now!

I find it amazing that you can still get those window rubbers. What sort of a market is there for that stuff anymore? A few die-hards like ourselves who keep these old dinosaurs going...

I remember when I drove RMs in London my conductor arranged to meet his mate with his RM at Clapham Junction and they proceeded to swap the manky seats off the PVS escapee with the half-decent ones off our service bus. I didn't get involved but seemingly nobody noticed...... Keep the PA system, could bring in a premium on some jobs.

Keep the pa system. Good to have one bus with system. If its not used then maybe remove at a later date. I think you will use it loads tho. A good old sing song on a rm would be so much fun. 👍

I have the pleasure of living near Ongar Station so regularly have the pleasure of seeing and sometimes traveling on Roger Wright's (London Bus Company) varied collection of RM's, RML's, RMC's, RT's SM's etc etc. I do wonder if you could get the smell manufactured by someone like United Flavours and Fragrances (or equivalent smaller firm). Keep the videos coming!

I know this come a year later... On the matter of the speaker system, the preservationist in me also says to remove it. But since the damage has already been done, might as well leave it. For example, I now own the 71 Chevy pickup that used to belong to my grandparents. It has a CB radio installed as well as the antenna mount. Not at all factory. But it looks very professional, and it is of the same era, so it remains in place.

late to the game, but i hope i don't see you ripping out the sound system in the next video. seems well executed except for some of the wiring, i think it would be a rather useful thing to have for your business. i would imagine the open top would be another good one for such a system and you can use this as a template. just use weather proof speakers for the upper deck.

It's adifficult one regarding the PA system, yes Routemaster weren't built with it installed, but then again it would be nice for wedding guests to have a little background music. However wouldn't you need a PRS licence to play music to people?

You should leave the PA in. You can’t put a value on flexibility in your business. That said, I’m a late comer and I have well and truly missed the bus. :)

The PA speakers aren’t in the best place acoustically and you can probably get other speakers that look more retro or discreet but they amp and mixer are fine where they are.

Hi thank you once again for another great video it doesn’t matter that it was a short one still very enjoyable. I myself would remove PA system like you said in the video route masters never had them. How ever thinking on the business side if you was to have one bus with a PA system on board at least you could give your clients the option to play music on the bus if that’s what they want. I just want to make another comment in the guards to the volume of the background music just needs to be turned down that bit more as when you’re doing your voice-over you do sound a bit quiet if you could do that then you will have it spot-on. How many route masters do you have in your fleet altogether? Do you own any RMLs or do you just own RMs? Keep up the excellent work that you are all doing I look forward to your next video. After watching the video again I just want to refer back to my comment that I just made in regards to the volume of background music does not need to be altered as I previously said as it sounds okay as it is.
