The Aiki Dojo Podcast - Is Aikido Lethal?
In Episode 50 of the Aiki Dojo Podcast, we discuss lethality and discus the weather or not Aikido is lethal. Aikido is a mature martial art but it has its roots in traditional Japanese Jujitsu dating as far back as mid 800 AD. Born out of warfare and combat, Aikido strives to be a modern martial art and thus the role of killing has been evolved out of the Art. But, can it be lethal? Should it be lethal? We answer these questions and much more.
Enjoy!

The answer is yes. But it give you the option for mercy. That's why we train slowly.

When someone falls and his head encounters a curb or a wall, that should be definitely considered as highly danderous and lethal. As regarding training, it is too easy to make harm to an opponent during training by just releasing full power. I find it to be a problem in Aikido. You need a master class uke to be able to release your power in full.

I listened to the 50th issue with great interest. In my opinion, there is a difference between the statements "Aikido is deadly" and " every Aikido technique is deadly." Arguments about the lethality of Aikido as a martial art look rather abstract. Aikido is essentially very practical. We can reflect on what the statement "every Aikido technique is lethal" gives us. First: we don't need an additional technical arsenal, such as kicks and punches. Second: every Aikido technique (simplified in kihon) has a common core that contains a lethal quality. Third: falls in Aikido do not contain a lethal component. They can only cause injury as a result of a mistake. Thank you very much.

I really enjoy listening to the podcast! I have a somewhat unrelated question to the topic: what´s the difference between a Sensei and a Shihan?

Talking about Aikido potential to be letal or dangerous, just a beginner can disable someone by not letting you go, when throwing and do the roll, and by holding you they can cause bodily damage, and harming you, sine you cannot control the fall. And it happens once in a while.

I think it's important to note the background of past senseis such as Gozo Shioda, Tomiki, Tohei, etc. is that they were all very accomplished judoka even before they began aikido training. Some of them were 3rd, or even 4th dan in judo, having dedicated a significant portion of their early lives to serious judo training. So you cannot compare them to someone who has ONLY trained in aikido. Today, you have someone like Roy Dean. Dean initially trained in aikido, earned his blackbelt, then he later discovered BJJ, eventually earning his black belt in BJJ. Roy Dean CAN make aikido work. He can make aikido work BECAUSE he has BJJ skills to fall back on, and to get him out of situations. To put simply, my beliefs are: Roy Dean with Aikido Black Belt and BJJ Black Belt is a very lethal person. Roy Dean with BJJ Black Belt ONLY is a very lethal person. Roy Dean with Aikido Black Belt ONLY is not a very lethal person. I feel the problem with many (notice that I did not say "all") aikido schools today is the training methods. Unrealistic attacking. I think a good topic for a podcast would be on aikido training methods, and how realistic "attacks" are.

42min Kimura: Shioda and I played at arm wrestling back then. Ahh, he was really strong. I was 170cm (5′ 6″) tall and 85 kg (187 lbs), and Shioda was 154 cm (5′) tall and 47 kg (103 lbs). Shioda: Somewhere Kimura said that he lost ten out of ten times, but actually we did it three times and I only won the first two times. At most, he slipped his hand out the third time. (laughing)

Congrats on the 50th podcast. It's really interesting to listen to your view an experiences in Aikido. It's quite different from mine. Nearly in every podcast you mention you or someone getting beatup. And I feel that just hasn't happened in my years of Aikido practice. And the stories you tell about your sensei are kind of concerning. It sounds abusive, and perhaps you guys have stockholm syndrome. Like Furuya sensei tearing your shoulder. I don't think it's acceptable. But you may say that's how it was back then and just accept it. How do you think Furuya sensei would have handled the scenario at the storage place? I think you did the right thing and handled it well.
