A Prius gets some needed LCD screen fixin!
A newer car in the fleet, our 2010 Prius suffered a blow to its LCD screen a couple years after it was new, it was never tended to, but now, its time to work on that! Follow along, step by step.
Some may replace the entire radio head unit, thats a grand ($1000) or more, used at least half that...so how about we just order the screen itself for $64 and spend 30 minutes swapping it out.
It truly is not hard, just keep moving forward with each step and you will come out the other side with a working radio/navigation system!

...and while you are working on this, order a new navigation DVD, the heart of the maps on the nav system for these cars, easy to install....just insert the new DVD, reboot, it updates the head and poof you are working with new maps!
It used to be a pricy visit to Toyota to have a technician swap your DVD and put a key in, they don't have that block any more...most people use their phones and there is no value any more charging a customer $300 to do this.

I just got a Prius and my screen needs to be replaced and this is going to help immensly! Though seeing that the screen tilts out at the beginning, i said shut up it does not..... Only to try it and have my mind blown. Holy crap.

Absolutely great video! Music was fire, fuck the haters in the comments! I do want to note at 21:38 when the ribbon cable is being reinserted the silver lining on the back of the connector flip that up lay ribbon cable appropriately the clamp back down that'll make it seat properly and will resolve the black screen at completion! Once again fabulous video and very well filmed!

I will use this to fix the screen in my aunts prius. Very nice! Note: for those who do not know. If you are replacing from a screen that does not work at all, (black screen) hold down the eject/close button for a few seconds then it should open. Any disks inside should automatically start ejecting

If you’re unable to click eject all because your screen is completely broken like mine. You can just hold the eject button on the left side of the screen and it will open it that way as well.

Thanks for this demo, I'm gonna be doing this myself in a few days, just bought a new one. I shit myself last night when I broke my screen and it stopped responding to touch. One thing though, I think removing the motherboard was unnecessary, it looked like only the cables needed to be disconnected. Either way, this helped me out!

Screen replacement seemed to go perfect but screen is totally black. Not sure what could cause that. I know connection to car is good.

I figured it out by watching another video and my own closer inspection. #1 The ribbon cable where it attaches to the car does have a clip that you use a dental pick to pull outward on each side. Just yanking it out and /or trying to push it in without releasing the clip is bad. #2 The big ribbon cable as soon as you open the metal cover also has a release bar. It’s the silver part and you need to pull up both sides and raise it up 90d. This is critical to get the cable locked back in after the repair. Trying to push the cable in without releasing is impossible to get it fully seated. I appreciate the video but you got lucky and I hope nobody messes up their car by yanking cables as all the ribbons have a release mechanism

if you shine a light on the screen does anything seem to show? LIke the light is off? Wonder if the strip is backwards....first i've heard of this not working...thats no good =(

@@bishopofrustyiron3101 I am having the same problem. I replaced the touch screen, following your steps (great video btw!) and now the screen does not power up at all. The ribbon cable is fully inserted. The gold strips are facing down

@@leh1273 Hmm ya thats a weird one, i presume the mechanism works and it ejected fine....so it 'can' read from the ribbon cable...is the cable looking okay? no cracks, pinches, or creases? You may need to test that at each end, make sure they are not cracked along that ribbon.

The thin broad wire? Does yours have a plastic loop or is it just the slide in? Both take a lot of meticulous 'Nope, uh huh, yes, nope, dang it, nope, uh huh hmm, nope, dang it!"

In my 2010 the screen is not responsive at all. Is doing what you have done, by replacing the lcd screen be the fix to that? Thanks!

My case was half the screen was not responding because the glass was broken and the 'touch' is inside that medium. Fairly cheap repair, might want to do it anyway, wont make it worse, Perhaps your setup right now has a loose ribbon cable, that would do that too.

How do you get your radio to pop out if the screen is white with black lines so I can’t see anything on the screen

Well, first press the close button once, then you may need to press all over the screen ... if the touch mechanism is all dead on the screen, there is a way to force the screen/radio to open with a screw driver. I'll see if I can find that.

Make sure you can remove the head screws before buying the screen replacement. My 2011 Prius some dickhead used copious amounts of locktite. The drivers side came out with a lot of difficulty but the passenger side unscrewed a 1/4 turn and that was it. Ended up with stripped screw that even a screw extractor only stripped out more. What a fucking waste of time and money. So pop the head out and try to remove those screws first.

Can you lift the screen manually? My LCD is completely non-responsive therefore I cannot make the screen eject or fold out.

Yes you can but the arms that are holding it in are on a set of gears, hmm, I bet there is a way to get it to pop out even when the screen is totally off. does the screen beep when touched, even though its off/dark?

I think if you hold the "Eject/Close" button to the left for like 10 seconds it should open

I was hoping once it was opened I’d see a reset button or something and miraculously my touch screen would work again. Does anyone know what to do if the touch screen doesn’t work at all. I can’t even add my new cellphone for the hands free option. This really sucks. I don’t want to have to put anymore money into my car if I don’t have to. I just had to replace my engines electric water pump which was a totally unexpected thing. Of course. Who really sits around and expects auto parts to stop working. Anyways any help would be great. Thank you very much.

The light does come from that glass panel, for the small cost its worth the effort, it won't get worse. I'll lay odds that it will work!

I just kept pressing the "eject all" and all over the screen till it eventually popped open. If yours is not lighting, you might want to try to follow along on the sounds and my finger positions as i go through the menu...it might register your pressing even if the lights off. Good luck hope that works!

well i ruined my ribbon cable the one that goes to the car. Anyone know where i can find a replacement? I had no idea the ribbon cable had locks in either ends.

You can get a new one for about $9 at: www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832645729296.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt Seems a random chance for lock style, some are unwilling to let the ribbon slide out easily.

I messed up the last step to insert ribbon cable back into the car port.The whole casing came loose. Any suggestions to keep it back in place? 😢

Looks like you could follow this from toyota.com Remove one of the car battery terminals for a couple of mins (3-4mins). The reattach the battery terminal back. This will make your cd player and car clock reset. once you start your car you should be able to eject the cds.

After connecting the final ribbon cable my screen remains black and plays the radio. Any idea what might the issue? Did I insert something wrong?

So my guess is that the final ribbon cable isn't actually connected all the way. He doesn't show it in the video but there's a trick to both of the final 2 ribbon connections you have to make. On the motherboard, the ribbon with the weird loop of plastic around it has to be inserted by flipping part of the connector up 90⁰, inserting the ribbon, then flipping and locking the connector closed. On the car end of the ribbon cable, the connecter has a small black plastic piece that doesn't look like it should come off, you need to hook one end of it and pull it out with tweezers or your fingernails then insert the ribbon and push the plastic bit back into place. Hope this helps :)
