Ultimately, the problem is the walls that the studios have up, and the way it takes to get over them. If a person has a good idea and they send it in as a script, it's sent back unread with the label "No unsolicited materials." This means it has to be submitted by an agent. So you send it to an agent and they send it back unread with the label "No unsolicited materials." This means it has to be submitted to them by a manager. So you send it to a manager and they send it back unread with the label "No unsolicited materials." So how do you get it solicited. Well, that's where "it's who you know" comes in. It all becomes about relationships and socializing your way to "the right people." You have to get yourself seen by them, then liked by them, and you have to remain in their good graces. This means kissing their asses and never calling them out on anything. This is how sexual harassment and those sorts of things happened, because plenty of people see it, but the ones who call it out are blacklisted and can never get their projects seen again. Those who do play ball; who help cover up misdeeds and hang around only "the right people" finally get their projects seen, and those are what are chosen for movies. So the bottom line is, the skills it takes to get your films made are not the abilities to tell a good and original story; they are about socializing with the "right" people. And by the time you get through all of that, you're too exhausted to come up with an original story, so you just retell an old one at a time when these social walls were not quite as tightly built.

It isn't just script writing. When you look at background of various child actors/actresses that graduate to larger roles. Those from UK are mostly all from theater where you have to prove yourself, vs the US in which a disproportionate number are the children of actors, models, action stars.
@aedressler

Also, studio heads tightly control certain narratives. This explains why Holocaust movies hit the big screen while Adolph Hitler's: The Greatest Story Never Told is relegated to Bitchute

Conspiracy theory: Philip's assassination was planned by... Philip. He knew his health was failing and he'd never be able to pull off the Persian campaign, but that Alexander had the talent to do it himself. In this way he secured his succession, set Alexander up for victory in the field, and blaming the assassination on the Persians gave them a cassus belli to boot.

Another gem from Dan. I strongly recommend the books by Mary Renault if you enjoyed this presentation. It starts with "Fire from Heaven" about The Birth and early life of Alexander. It is fiction and just an amazing series of books. She brings the characters to life so well that you hate Perdikas and other guys fairly early. Ptolemy emerges as the best suited heir just like Dan reveals and this is probably accurate based upon the success of his dynasty vs the rest. Be ready for some shocks if you delve into the 2nd book- "the Persian Boy". This is must read material as well as EVERYTHING by Steven Pressfield on the Greek world. Ford has a great fictional account of Xenophons misadventures in Persia as well. Historical fiction never had it so good.

Some temple devotees overheard Olympias cry to the Goddess 'will no one rid me of this bothersome new wife and her two brats?' and they ran off, being drunk, and did the deed of foul murder unbeknownst to the fretting Queen! That's the ticket! :D

Alexander didn't fight Porros in the "rainforest", but along the Hydaspes (Jhelum River) in what is now Pakistan. The climate and terrain was probably not too different from Alexander's home in Northern Greece. I guess you remember the scene in the 2004 Oliver Stone film that is filmed in Thailand(!) of all places.

I just gave this a thumbs up before I even listened to it. I mean come on, it's Dan. I'm certainly not going to hate it. I understand that this means that it will be at least seven months before we get a 6-hour episode. I'm okay with that and I am very excited about this. Thank you. Mr. Carlin.

About to dive in but seeing Dan got most his historical info from Green and Bosworth doesn't fill me with joy. They are so anti-Alexander its ridiculous. Made their fortunes hating on Alexander.....which is fine......But they are too biased with their rabid negativity.

6:20 Alexander never ventured into rainforest though, Hydaspes River Is actually sandy arid river plain- it's in the modern province of Punjab in Pakistan. Which means its no where in the rainforests of the south as depicted in Oliver Stone's movie. Honestly I would actually be curious to see how Alexander and his companions would have handled the rainforests because the terrain's neither condusive to his sarissa Pikemen nor his heavy cavalry.

He fought a battle at or near 23°n. The tropic of cancer in what is now Pakistan. Then founded a city there. This area was heavily forested at the time, before the trees were all cut down. Back then it was rainforest I guess.

From Wiki. " Accounts of the Indus valley from the times of Alexander's campaign indicate a healthy forest cover in the region, which has now considerably receded. The Mughal Emperor Babur writes of encountering rhinoceroses along its bank in his memoirs (the Baburnama). Extensive deforestation and human interference in the ecology of the Shivalik Hills has led to a marked deterioration in vegetation and growing conditions. The Indus valley regions are arid with poor vegetation."
