The only reason i subscribed because he does such a fine job of telling the story behind the weapon. If there was no story then it would not as interesting. Youre doing a swell job sir

Nice video. Thanx for sharing this. The engraving "Niedersachsen" addresses the nowadays state Lower Saxony of Germany. Later in the video, the engraving "Thüringen" also addresses a state of today's Germany - Thuringia. And to follow the time line, "Niederrhein" is a region in today's state North Rhine-Westphalia, "Franken" is the northern region of Bavaria. And, the last but not least, "Kurpfalz" (that you pronounced really good - BTW) is the northern-west region in Germany's state Baden-Württemberg - in detail, the region around Mannheim/Heidelberg and down to the south of them. And, I think I can tell you what "Schiesien" is... It is "Schlesien" - Silesia. This was a (big) region in the south-east of the old Prussia and... of the 3rd Reich. Just think of a region where the city of Breslau was the centre of it. Breslau nowadays is named Wroclaw and is a city in the county ??? Lower Silesia ??? of Poland.

Excellent video Mr Whiteman! Just a quick correction/addition: at 23:30 you describe the Gruppe as being “Schiesen”, but it is actually “Schlesien” (Silesia). Somehow I didn’t get to meet you at the SOS this year, hopefully next time! I saw in your video that you were at Tom Wittmann’s stand after I visited, because you point out the Luftwaffe gravity knives. The case is minus a takedown model, which I now own! Keep up the good videos, I like the history aspect you throw in, even though it might lack in detail. In the end it’s about the firearms, not the political details!!

I’m a big fan of your videos and of these early Walther pistols. I’d like to collect them but I struggle with the morality of attributing value to objects of the Nazi regime. Do you have a video that discusses this conundrum? I understand the historical and intellectual aspects of studying this, but investing and anticipating greater future demand is troubling.

@@109ejg I don’t collect nazi era suits or cars either. Trading modern, non-fascist public companies isn’t a moral equivalent. I actually do own Walthers and Sauers but post war. Like I said, I have a collector’s interest but it comes at the cost of moral ambiguity when it brings value to items emblazoned with what is arguably the most recognizable symbol of hatred and genocide in the history of humanity. I guess I’ll just continue to watch the videos and learn the history of the Walther company and its various business dealings with the regime. Its historically interesting, I respect the studied approach and the engineering acumen demonstrated by Carl Walther’s PP and PPK.

@@jb4948 Either you are interested, from a collector’s point of view, in the history of the artifact, the mechanics/workings of the artifact, the aesthetics of said artifact. Perhaps a combination, but a true collector does not collect these artifacts because of its connection to political and/or human evil. If you cannot stomach the period of history in which the artifact was made, then you shouldn’t collect them. You should then visit a museum and view the items without guilt. It really is a choice. On a personal level, I cannot stress enough how important it is to teach the younger generation about what happened and not to forget.

Hugo Boss did NOT design the Nazis uniform. His company was one of three or four contracted to make the black SS uniform. The SA unfiform came from a job lot of army surplus bought in by the then impecunious Party. The black SS uniform was designed by SS members Karl Diebtisch (artist) and Walter Heck (graphic designer). Maybe stick to talking about the pistols? 😉

Sorry, please learn how to pronounce those areas in Germany, it is not hard, Thüringen sounds like Tyyringen, Sachsen (Saxony) Sax en, loud big S short a and a hard x like in Tax and a soft en. Please try, here in Europe we always try to pronounce as the Natives do it if we do not have our own older name / pronunciation. So use Saxony if You could not say Sachsen in German. Here in sweden we say Saxen, the people is Saxarna, this is the same word we use for a pair of scissors, very strange I know, the will probably do not have anything in common.

Tom. At 4:31 you stated: "...when you give one group power, the Nazi Party, they immediatly began rounding up their enemies, what they would call 'criminal element..." I strongly disagree with your assessment. After a series of events--the elections of 1932, the Reichstag Fire Decree which suppressed any civil liberties, and the Enabling Act which allowed the cabinet to rule by fiat, Hitler and his Nazi thugs TOOK power. Hindenberg's death was a relatively minor event, but it left Hitler as the only actor on the stage. I know you never intended to delve that much into the history of those years, but it is very misleading to state that Hitler was given power. Hitler and partially through intimidation and violence of the SA and SS, cemented the Nazi's seizure of power. You have a fanciful view of the SA as do-gooders, for they bodyguards for Hitler and the skull-cracking arm of the Nazis. The SA didn't allow any voice of dissent. Perhaps they went after a criminal or two to justify their existence, but their primary purpose was intimidation. They were thugs through and through. In no means, were they good-natured vigilantes akin to the Guardian Angels going around to make certain there was no crime on the S-bahn. For a better idea of the rise of the Nazis and the SA, here is a good video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-6I1bnSWyg.html

Thank you for that perspective. I'm always learning. It is my understanding that when Hitler first come to power, he did NOT have a majority but a coalition of moderates and the Nazi Party joined forces in order to keep the Communists out of power. So he was not elected by a majority of Germans. Later, due to "getting things done" he grew in popularity. Is that not correct ?

@@thomaswhiteman4261 the NSDAP never actually got a majority until Hitler had already been given emergency powers. The Nazis lost dozens of seats in the last election in November 1932 before Hitler became Chancellor in Jan 1933. After the Reichstag fire Hitler was able to install SA thugs around the country to "monitor" the March 5 1933 election and intimidate non-Nazis from voting and gained seats, but was still short of a majority until the Reichstag fire was blamed on the KPD (modern historians largely consider this to be an early false flag operation carried out by the Nazis). The KPD was the third largest party in the Reichstag at the time so their expulsion gave the Nazis a majority. Later in March Hitler used this majority (well actually the supermajority granted by his coalition with the Conservative and Centre parties) to pass the Enabling Act giving him dictatorial power. Only after Hitler was already dictator did the NSDAP ever win a majority.
