For anyone curious, if a chinchilla gets wet, the density of its soft, fluffy fur keeps moisture trapped and eventually grows into mould. This is why dry dust baths are used.

to ppl that wonder why they do this, the chinchilla's fur is so thick that if they bathe in water the moisture will get stuck in the fur and turn into mold. so they bathe in dust to keep themselves clean.

Used to own one of these critters. If you look closely, they even have special skin flaps inside their ears to close them when they bathe and keep out the sand. Apparently, not just any sand will do either. Pumice sand is best, because it is fine yet has a coarse, glassy texture (essentially being crushed volcanic glass). It's common in the Andes where chinchillas live in the wild. If you don't want the extra expense of buying pumice sand in the pet shop, fine river sand will do as well. Shouldn't keep the sand tub inside the chinchilla's cage constantly, though, and only put it in once or twice a day, since the little fellas are unfamiliar with the concept of toilet training and will crap in it same as they do everywhere else if left on their own.

If it were this easy for humans to feel this much joy, this would be a much better world.

My dad's friend had a Chinchilla. Those things are super difficult to take care of if I remember correctly. They die of depression really easily if you don't take care of them right.

I feel like I'm about to sneeze just watching this.

I took care of one while a young lady was out of state. I had it a few months and got to know it. Very comical and loved to be out of the cage. At first it was in a ball yet I felt sorry for it and let it run wild. At first it was fine and would come to me when I called to put it up. Then it decided I like this shit and would bounce off the walls running through the house proclaiming it's freedom. It was hilarious.

Watching this I miss my chins Zeke and Dolly. Such precious, ultra soft puff balls. The dust baths were such fun but a bit messy. They also chewed the bottoms of all of my cupboard doors in the kitchen the little stinkers. They will chew you out of house and home if you aren't vigilant when they are out of their cage.
