@ZoulousProductions Ouigo is good. But it's not Ryanair cheap. You can still end up paying €100+ for a Paria-Marsaille train. It's why France wants the EU to implement minimum prices on flights because trains just cannot compete with the budget airlines.
@@joshmarsh2532 You're wrong. Trains are always winning because of the luggage fee, they drop you right in the city, not in a 20mn away airport. You can board any TGV train 3 minutes before departure, you can't with planes. The only exception is destinations not well desserved by direct train like Brest, Toulouse, Nice, etc everything not direct TGV.
I think the comparisons would be more interesting if you used public transport exclusively. Cabs in France are so expensive and public transportation works generally well. Considering that your final destinations are not the suburbs, I don't think you'll have any problem using the metro or the buses. Those £14 would be less than €2 if you used the metro in Marseille.
It would not change much the comparison. In both cases Paris Orly and Marseille, they are buses that will take the same roads than cabs departing every 10 minutes but having dedicated bus lines when arriving near cities.
that would be interesting. furthermore, the cost comparison was slightly unfair because it was first class train vs economy on the plane. guess, that would have cut the cost of the ride significantly. furthermore, how much luggage is allowed on the plane vs on the train? flights are still seriously restricting.
@@robertheinrich2994I completely agree. I guess only the time matters for this challenge in particular, but few people in France would spend £151 on this train route (you can find tickets for €15-€30 if you search in advance). However, I'd rather spend that money on a train than on a cab to Orly +a 1-hour plane ride... That's insane.
@@123pgq A plane flight of 1h30 is not really 1h30, bc for airports are never in city center+you have checking before and after. The time you take to the airport, to check etc and then to go out the airport and go in city center you don't gain a lot of time but you pollute way more
For Orly: Instead of a taxi in Paris traffic - from Louvre to Aéroport d'Orly there is a connection via RER B from Châtelet Les Halles (6 minutes walk from the Louvre) to Antony and then there the people mover ORLYVAL (like those Airtrains in the US but without paying extra).
@@PascalGienger Paris Visite 3 Jours costs an arm and a leg, it is just worth it if you take the subway several times over the day, including the airports.
I have been to Marseille main railway station before, and to be quite honest I don't really think Nicky would have needed the UBER cab to get down to the Marina because it's pretty straightforward from the SNCF station, one long street really. But if he's never really been there before and he is in a race then I could understand him using the taxi.
Not to mention that it's the only mean of transportation that is compatible with maintaining good living condition on earth (about 85kg of CO2 with that flight vs 1,7kg for that train)
Unless a full flight journey is 2-3 hours quicker than taking a train, then all the hassle and discomfort of going through security, queuing for gates, collecting luggage if required, getting from the airport to the city etc etc just isn't worth it.
MDR, quand tu devras faire Paris-Toulouse tu seras bien content de prendre l’avion crois-moi. (ce n’est pas pour rien que c’est la ligne la plus empruntée d’Europe d’ailleurs)
Actually the fastest way for Nick to get to the Old Port was to take the metro line 1 from Saint Charles station (unless it was closed bc there have refurbishment works for years in this station) !! It's only 2 stops from the old port and way way cheaper than the taxi journey ! 12:47 This was Avignon !!! I'm living here and Nick filmed the city just before the train approached the High Speed Train station in South West Avignon!
My thoughts too that taking the metro would have been faster. The non-stop TGV to Marseille takes 3h 4min, not 3h 18min, so there is another 14 minutes wasted :)
Cheap high speed travel in 2023: TGV Paris-Bordeaux (570 km), September 6, departure Paris 9:11am - arrival Bordeaux 11:14am, journey time 2h03. Best price at 25 euros (2nd class).
I do like the colour scheme inside the Air France cabin and the little headrest cover is just perfect. The French do pay a lot of attention to detail and make things look very nice.
I think it would be fair if the one who goes with the plane will be at the airport 2 hours in advance, like most of us do. It would be a more fair comparison. Everyone would show up at the train station like 5 min before, so it makes a big difference in travel time
@@YukonGhibli what maryburger says, and on top of that if you didn't show up at least 2 hours before and you miss your flight because of circumstances like delays at security your travel insurance won't pay out
@@koen1090 I fly at least twice a week (sometimes more) everyweek other than Christmas/NewYear's normally, around the world, and never have that issue. you should watch more of these videos and learn to avoid such nonsense. 1.5 hours LOL
@@YukonGhibli I know it's nonesense for experienced flyers, but you should agree with me that most normal tourists are more anxious flying. I show up 1 hour before maximum. But for example at Schiphol, Amsterdam this year it was horrible and I've missed some flights haha! Most viewers are inexperienced flyers so you should adapt the video on them innit?
i’ve just gotten the tgv from paris to cannes (originally from the eurostar in london) and it was a super long journey but very worth the views! was relatively comfortable also!
That's because the high speed stops in Marseille and the rest to Nice/Vintimiglia is on regular tracks. There used to be a direct Eurostar link between London and Marseille and it would take 6 hours in total (only on southbound trains though). It was by far beating the train if you were stopping in Valence or Avignon.
I remember when it was around six hours to get down to Marseille, now with that high speed track all the way down, 3h18 is RAPID! They should ban the plane on that route, it should win every time. Only worth having domestic flights to Nice and Corsica. And when the high speed rail links are completed on the Nice line and extension from Bordeaux to Toulouse, can't see a future for domestic air travel in France.
Well there are no more plans to create a complete high speed track between Marseille and Nice. However there's a project of creating some interesting shortcuts on the existing tracks and an underground station in Marseille that could reduce travel time from 2.5 to 1.5 hours for high speed trains.
You can actually just walk from Saint Charles Station down to the port. It's a twenty minute walk straight down from the station. And you get to take the spectacular stairs that lead down from the station to one of Marseille's most iconic avenues. But the quickest would be the metro. Two stops. A taxi is possibly the worst option.
I would rather fly because I like having a flight service. I am biased bc trains are much slower in the U.S. Though for short trips 2 to 3 hours, taking the train can be nice but often it is more pricy than driving and there maybe only one trip per day.
@@Determination212 you do realize this is France and there is an high speed train service to Marseille every half hour during rush hour and one per hour outside that. Plus the train station is in the middle of the city while the airport is closer to the next town (Aix de provance) then to Marseille
It’s a good thing. It’s only for routes that can be done in less than 2.5 hours by train (so basically Paris-Lyon) and passengers connecting are allowed to fly the route.
@@simonkile598As background info: The TGV service itself already stopped many domestic flights beginning in the 1980ies. Air Inter - the former domestic airline of France - went bankrupt due to the TGV AND the horrible accident approaching Strasbourg (missing a navigation point ). The private air company Air Inter complained often about "state subsidized railroads" but the public endorsed the fast trains. The TGV atlantique Strasbourg - Paris - Nantes - Brest started in its blue livery (decommissioned now) beginning of the 1990ies. Since then it ate most of domestic flights. The ban was just a bit on top not really affecting much. What I am wondering is why AF has Orly - Marseille as CDG - Marseille would be way better. You're faster at CDG via RER than in Orly and you can use that es extension leg to the final destionation for arriving international passengers wanting to go to Marseille. Air France replaced many of those last destination flights with TGV service and your flight coupon is also a TGV seat reservation.
@@simonkile598it’s stupid cause if I’m connecting it’s so useful already being at the airport instead of having to take a taxi. Stupid environmentalists caused this
@@maxsaviation9512 dude do you know how to read? If you have a connection, this law literally doesn’t impact you. You’re still allowed to take a connection flight for these journeys. It only applies to flights like Paris-Lyon that are like 2 hours by bullet train and only to point to point passengers, not connecting ones…
@@maxsaviation9512 also, I’m not an environmentalist by any measure, but these sort of small laws that really don’t inconvenience anyone are really logical and I’m happy that we have them.
Train the correct choice for this one because you don't have to deal with airport security lines delays at the runway. In France there might be plans to phase out CDG MRS flights basically between those two you have to take the train as part of their plan to combat emissions by short haul planes
Is it really necessary to take a taxi from Marseille Saint-charles to Vieux Port? Couldn't you walk this short distance? The metro gets you there as well.
Cracking race - and so informative! Thanks for doing this route - I am inspired by your race as love train travel. Well done and stay passionate. Hello from London : - )
Little tip for any future travelers - the taxis to Orly or Charles de Gaulle airports are price controlled. Public transit is ideal but if you must take a car the traditional taxi is at least more price reliable than Uber. The G7 app works similar to ride-share apps and you can schedule a pickup for a little extra.
Another awesome and informative race video. Well done guys! Great to see the TGV winning on this one! Had you guys thought about doing a race between Milan & Rome with High speed train vs plane? Or even German ICE train vs plane on either Frankfurt to Munich or Frankfurt to Hamburg? I'm sure all 3 would be a close fight :)
TGV is awesome, we did Tours to Bordeaux to Nice in First class, it was great. Always wanted to visit Marseille. BTW while in Marseille you have to try Bouillabaisse.
Another brilliant video - superb editing makes it fun viewing. Love the competitve aspect and the information about two modes of trransport. AF delay cost Liam....c'est la vie...
I would love to see the carbon footprint difference at the end of these also. Especially in cases like this where the taxi taken to the airport added to the environmental cost.
German rail Deutsche Bahn makes it possible that a bus(!) is faster from Zürich to Munich than a train. Despite fully electrifying the track from Lindau to Munich and having cut out the cul-de-sac Lindau Insel station...
i love you guys, but these are the opposite of how i like to travel. too stressful!!! running through airports and train stations is not my idea of a good time
Unfair comparison : very unusual nowadays not to get to the airport at least 1h in advance. Plus : in Paris, Louvre to Gare de Lyon, 4’ with Line 14, 12’ with line 1
To be precise, to take line 14 from the Louvre you need to walk to Metro Pyramide, which will ad 5'. So more like 10' vs 12'. Short hall air travel is just the pits, anyway.
Oh, and BTW . . . that plane ride emitted about TEN TIMES more carbon per passenger than the TGV. So if you guys want an actual "future" on Earth, maybe you should give a little think about THAT.
Great video! TGVs are worth it when they run on a Fast Speed Track. For Marseille, it's perfect, but should you go to Nice, not so far away, the TGV then runs on the old classic track and it takes about 5 hours to reach Nice. In this case plane always win on time spent.
@@PascalGienger Passing by Gare de Lyon daily I can confirm that it is very confusing, especially from the metro hall, the sheer number of portals you see when you get from metro 1 is is mind blowing and can get you confused in no time. The signs can direct you and are in english too, but it is not very subtle. Although not the worst station in europe. If you want to get lost go to Chatelet XD
I don't want to crush Liam's hope here, but when a plane takes off late, it usually still lands on time. However, 25mn is a big part of the total flight duration, so you might actually have land a bit late but also probably less than 25mn. Flightradar says that the last time this flight was delayed for 25mn at take off, it landed with only 10mn delay. So still 10mn short ;) But yes, with those 10 minutes, maybe you would not have got stuck in traffic in Marseille. Anyway, both part were really fun to watch.
Oh my god , you arrived at the Marseille train station and you took a car ...to go to the old port ! Madness, walking is much faster ! You would have taken 10min max
Would be interesting to compare CO2 emissions or the climate impact of both ways of travel. The train (at least in France thanks to nuclear) has a way smaller CO2 impact than that plane. The entire travel by plane war very Fossil fuel intensive Taxi Plane Taxi - while the train travel was frugal and could have even been better without that last taxi trip. All in all it’s good that the french government banned those flights where there is a train connection in less than 2 hours - hopefully they’ll start taxing kerosene and plane tickets too very soon 🤞🏻
So funny to watch this video because I live in South of France (1h away from Marseille by car) and I’m used to take both train and plane to go to Paris. (I took the train from Avignon though) I was sure the plane would be faster but guess I was wrong😂
vocês 2 , estão de parabéns por este vídeo, além de bastante prestativo, criativo, e esteticamente , visualmente muito bem editado....................................................... furtado sul do Brasil, vizinho Argentina
Oh good, the best case scenario... It's not one of those times the TGV runs 4 hours late because a fucking broken wire in summer. Something that needs mentioning: There's a higher chance for Nicky to never arrive in the first place.
Taking taxis in Paris is the most unintuitive thing to do. From Le Louvre all he had to do was to take line 7 at Palais Royal Musée du Louvre to Villejuif Louis Aragon then Tramway 7 to Orly Airport. Zero extra cost if he bought a commuting pass, maybe 2x 2 euros if he paid on the spot. Sure it adds about 20 minutes but it doesn't change anything overall. The plane will still take off at the same departure time. Moreover if there is traffic the taxi can be slower and one might miss his flight.
I know trains are faster and more efficient, but man, that feeling you get when a large airliner takes off... 🤌 All the technical achievements that lead to us being able to lift such a massive thing into the air and keep it going 1000km/h for hours... It's our triumph over some of the hardest challenges nature threw at us. I just love it.
There is not only a few fly lines remaining. On the contrary, only a few has been removed because the French government is counting this way : to cancel a fly line, you have to be under 2hours in train from airport to airport (which is a nonsense).
I'm sorry but already the video starts with something unfair. Why the plane got to take a taxi to orly and not the public transit or, why the guy with the train does not take a taxi to Gare de Lyon?
Because the metro will be faster than a taxi between Louvre and gare de lyon ? :) The real mistake is to take a taxi in Marseille because it would have been faster to take the metro too
11 месяцев назад
@@athrunzala6770 the metro will be faster between le Louvre and gare de Lyon (just the line 1), but the train will be significantly slower than the taxi to reach Orly as the airport is notoriously complicated to reach by public transits. Of course, the same should apply once in Marseille.
Liam Don’t let nicky take ur winning streak of beating him in the rest of these race And for ur next video. Can u do a race to Manchester plane vs train pls Btw good vid😊 See ya in the next one
The realiity is the TGV wins easily, common people use the public transport and the Navette Aeroport from Marseille Airport to the Vieux Port and the displacement from Central Paris to Orly would only add more time in comparison to the simple TGV scheme of Metro to Gare de Lyon, TGV and Metro to Vieux Port.
Don't want to be pedantic but the law hasn't really done much, there was a lot of noise over nothing. It bans flying when a train service runs between the cities in 2.5 hours or less, but there has to be a certain number of services between them per day (I think 4 each way), and there must be a train running after a certain time in the day (I think 8pm but I'm not sure). On top of this, the airport is only classed as being "in the city" if it is a certain number of kilometres away. For example, Paris Orly counts as being "in Paris" so train times are measured from the main Paris terminals, but Charles de Gaulle, despite being the main Paris airport, is too far away, so the distance is measured from its closest train station (which is in the middle of nowhere and takes about an hour by itself to get into Paris). In fact, the law so only three flight routes banned (Paris Orly to Bordeaux, Nantes, and Lyon). Not quite an environmental win!
The guy's knees were touching the seat in front of him in the plane, yet he said he was comfortable!! BS!!! The sad thing is he paid the same price for that plane ticket in cattle class that the other guy paid for the train in first class. Why would you ever pay the same price for a plane ticket to be tgst uncomfortable?? There is no reason why that plane route even exists.
why didn't we just start the race an hour early....thought the race was to see train vs. plane to Marseille not Louvre to airport/train....once we got past that nonsense it was fun...
as much as I like flying, there are several countries where internal flights are no longer justified - France and Spain being among those - and as long as the EU keeps on repeating those "carbon emission target" BS those flights should be replaced by high-speed rail. however, in Romania from Bucharest to Cluj / Timisoara (about 500 km by rail) the train takes 9h or 9h30 at best, while the plane only 30-45 minutes, so its again a no brainer here :))
To correctly test the law this would be better as a raleigh because this is how the law would be written. Compare one time against the other. Racing from the city center feels a bit odd.
