Eh, I wasn't a big fan of 4. It's not nearly as bad as 5-8, but it just didn't do it for me as much as the first 3. Just my opinion, though =)

Seasons 4-8 weren't at all as bad as people make them out to be. I actually found seasons 4 and 7 both amazing, mostly because of Trinity and Isaac, it was just the others that weren't exactly to Dexter's standard. They were still enjoyable though.

***** The most terrible season was season 5 with lumen. I needed so long to get through because it was so boring. The best one was probably 2 with Doakes and the Bay Harbor Butcher

Personally, I think the show started going downhill as soon as Doakes was killed off. All the romantic subplots were kind of interesting, but they ALL ended the same way. All of them.

***** When I say downhill, I mean in a literal sense. Season 3 was still pretty good, but not as good as 2. Season 4 was still alright, but not as good as season 3. But yeah, after Rita died, it really started to be badly handled.

when Rita dies that was a great opportunity to take a few years off and leave the audience wondering what happens next: with Dexter in the firing line for her murder, Arthur Mitchell's family all being able to identify him, the questions he would face about keeping his apartment after he got married, what happens with the kids etc if the show had taken a few years off at this point and then come back say round about now I'm convinced the second half of it's life cycle would have been better as they would have been able to give much more time to quality of story and continuity
