No one made anyone sell anything. We all sell and take hits. We buy PGX with extreme worry as they miss everything and CGC is not obligated to call because for all they knew, the guy who sent it in could have married the insert. That's why you have a screen option before it is slabbed and graded. Elite makes a recommendation on recent sales and you can choose to sell or not. But under money duress you sell. He realizes all of this. He maintains a positive attitude because you don't have a better option. And it is a lesson learned.

Look Don’t invest in comic books. Buy them to collect; sure sell extra stuff to fund your collection

Correct me if I’m wrong here but if you crack a CGC slab and resubmit then the pop count is ruined. Since we know this is not uncommon then wouldn’t it be safe to assume most CGC pop counts are incorrect?

The guy who bought it for 1200 will pop the staples replace them with correct staples from say a 190 ASM book and pull out the mark jewelers and bam it’s back to a 9.2-9.4 occhhh

Buying PGX with the intent to regrade and/or flip is an obvious risk that speculators take. Play stupid games...

He took a lot of hits, but the "knockout punch" was his own when he decided to sell it with a green label. He could have taken out the jeweler's insert and electro-clean the rusted staples he would have salvaged most of the mistakes.

How do we know this guy didn't try to get over by actually marrying a Mark Jewelers in there or bought a fraudulent one an didn't detect it? PGX is notorious for grading Frankensteined books. It's green because the mark Jewelers might have never belonged in the book in the first place

Of course they told him to sell it low, because they or a friend bought it, cracked it, fixed it, pressed it and got back a 9.0 or 9.2 blue label. A JOKE!

I’m confused. The guy first said that it was a PGX 9.2 and later said it was a PGX 9.4. Regardless, was the book labeled as a Mark Jewelers variant by PGX or did the seller inform him that it was a MJV? Either way, isn’t $4000 an absolutely ridiculous high price to pay for it?

If you buy a PGX book expect it to be approximately 2 grades higher than CGC would have graded it.

I would never buy a PGX book at full market value. A person I pick randomly from my local comic book store can grade better than PGX. I have seen PGX books given a normal grade, and the book is obviously restored or qualified.

Hey whats up? l dont trust the " experts". l have a large collection of Marvel and DC grails. If and when l sell them, l will grade them myself , maybe get some advice from the "experts " and ask what l think is fair. lf the buyer has a problem with it, they dont have to buy it. Only dude l took advice from was John Dolmayan, that was 16yrs ago, he had a comic booth at Frank & Sons collectibles before he formed Torpedo Comics in Vegas. He told me back then, buy all the Gold and Silver Age grail you can because in a few years, the're going to explode in price. He wasnt lying.

Cgc probably got it wrong. Who is inserting mark jewelers and why doesn’t make sense. Not logical. But a pgx 9.2 is a Cgc 8.5-9.0. I had an x-men 50 come back green label staples replaced from Cgc. I told my grading guy no way staples were replaced doesn’t make sense. Cracked the book open and sent it back in came back blue label and .5 higher grade.

Keep a watch on elite comics.....bet one comes up for sale with some of the same defects but without the insert.

Sooooo, did Elite take down the sale post of the 129? I went to find it, and it's nowhere on their wall. I scrolled down at least a years worth of their post and didn't see it at all.

I really feel for this guy but I don't understand how you think that it was CGC's job to contact him regarding the insert. They are grading the book that he sent them. If he had any doubts about it up front he should have contacted them to see if he could have the book returned as is if there was any indication that it would receive either a qualified or restoration label. Who he needs to be contacting though is PGX to get his money back as they are the ones that originally graded the book and either did not pick up on the married insert or they willfully did it. Then again is PGX even still around

Take out the Mark Jewlers insert and while the slightly rusty staples are open, replace them with nice staples from a doner Marvel comic from the same time period. I think it will come back a Universal in the low 9's.

This is a lesson in compounding damage started by purchasing a PGX slab.

Ouch. But I think this is the kind of thing that happens when you sell under duress. He needed some money for something big in his life so he may have made a bad decision or trusted the wrong people and just took what he could get. Reminded me when I needed to sell my books or have the pickup repo'd. I took what I could get for them and kept on trucking... that I could have gotten more for them wasn't even really a consideration since I got what I needed.

He could get it to conserved if he took it to someone who knows what they are doing.

There are several, but the #1 moral of the story is you buy PGX you're probably gonna get hosed!

Here's my take. I think this guy did the right thing at the end, after making several bad decisions. He cut his losses and got out of there. He shouldn't have bought the PGX book to begin with, and before you submit books you had better know how to grade yourself. Know the signs of restoration and tampering. Know who to contact for questions.

I never trusted elite comics, I'm glad they are being mentioned for what they are.

I think PGX has a little bit of the blame . The person who married the insert with the book has the most blame . And Elite has blame also for telling to sell so low. Definitely sounds like someone who knows them bought it for cheap. And they will remove it and replace staples with period . correct ones. Make a couple of grand.

Why didn't he crack it out and have the bs removed? Then send it back in? That's what the person who bought it will do. Then that person will laugh all the way to the bank after he/she doubled their money. Smh...
